Vehicle Detail
128th from the last car built. Titled as a 1976 but appears to be a 1975. Bought this months ago from a craigslist ad in North Carolina. Too many projects ahead of this car for me to be realistic about restoring. This is the 4th Coupe I have had and am very well versed at the nuances of the car along with problematic areas so I can only be honest about what I see. The prior owner imported this from Germany back in the early 80's. I have the original import paperwork along with original owners manuals and factory shop manuals. The prior owner loved the car but when the clutch failed he simply parked it due to financial circumstances. So it ran when parked.Engine turn overs. Engine is unmolested and all ancillary is in place and, from my experience, should fire up with some starter fluid. The fuel tank is dry and solid and does not have the old gas funk/smell. Clutch pedal actuates and feels good, brake pedal stiff and more than likely brakes will need a going through. making this car a driver should be simple enough. Disc brakes all the way around. German language switches and KM speedo. Now the real concerns everyone has about these cars.....rust. Rust always look bad - can't hide that. However, the rust this car has is not the type from driving salty roads. The car sat out in the weather causing most of its exterior surface rust patches. These areas are still solid under the surface rust. Oddball places like just over the tail lights, and any other places on the paint where there might have been a place for moisture to get under a scratch. However, the only exterior rust-through is behind front wheels. The wheel arches all around are actually intact so no need to replace the fender, just cut out the cancer and patch. The top fender channels that run the length of the engine bay are also solid - these usually rot through. The nose has never been hit.In fact, there is no evidence of any crash damage. The floor pans have the start of rust through - soft areas that are fist sized on both sides. This is not from a leaky sunroof but I suspect from sitting on dirt all these years. Still safe to drive - not fred flintstone yet. Inner fenders are clean and shock/strut towers do not have evidence of rust through and do not feel soft under the tar material that seems to be holding tight yet. Obviously hard to tell from within the trunk about the rear but looking under the car it looks good and there is no evidence of rust staining dripping down to the trunk pan. In fact, the trunk pan is as clean as they come - no rust can be seen and the spare mount is solid. Exterior rockers have no rust. can't see beyond that but I suspect no horrible rot from what I can see underside. All of the tools, jack, and other equipment still intact. Underside of trunk rust free. A-pillars have zero rust - probably due to no sunroof. The car has crank windows, which is an asset in my opinion. This model has fixed rear glass. Upholster is the typical euro blue velour which has bolster wear up front. The rear seats look great but have a bit of sun fade on top. The door panels are nice. Dash has only one split near the binnacle so as the driver you dont even see it. All wood shows de-lamination of the veneer at the edges but not to the plywood subsurface so can easily be re-veneered. IN general the dash looks good. The original Blaupunkt Frankfurt is loose but in excellent condition. The headliner is perfect with no tears at all along with really nice sun visors. Just a bit a mildew. The car smells dry. The seat foam is not deteriorating and still offers a nice firm ride. My take on the E9 series, from what I have read and experienced, is that you can be in command of a decent restoration by knowing and documenting what is under the paint. Or, you can play russian roulette and spend the money on an already restored E9 and hope that it was done properly. Here you see what you are getting before restoration. In my opinion, a decent candidate for restoration. With the going rate for very nice cars being upwards of 50K you should be able to come out ahead, especially if you do your own work. I bought the car, love the car, but other projects take priority and that means this car may sit for years before I can attack it. Your chance to get it on the road sooner - it deserves a good home. The glass is good all the way around - no cracks or pings. All aluminum belt trim looks great - no dings or corrosion. Please email with plenty of questions and bid responsibly. When it's sold, it's sold. There is no refund of deposits. To often people bid and win realizing what has just happened and ask to back out. The car is located with all my cars at my friends shop which has easy access for trucks. The car rolls and can easily be loaded but not driven. Keep in mind shipping costs. I spent $1300 to ship from North Carolina to New Mexico on an open carrier. On Jan-07-15 at 21:57:20 PST, seller added the following information: I noticed none of my pictures show the area just behind front wheel both sides due to shadows in the pictures - please email me and I'll send you pics of both sides of car out of shadow. These are the areas mentioned that have rust through. I'll try to also take close ups as well and send those along. Any areas you wish to have more detail just ask. Also, please be aware that any suggestion of ease of repair or repair costs are just estimates. I do all my own welding on my own cars and base my description on my experiences. If you sub out this sort of work and want a proper job, depending on who you use, prices can vary quite a bit. In the long run, you get what you pay for. I am suggesting, should you take on such a project, you document it and do it properly which protects your investment assuring future buyers will see that it was done right. Everyone is entitled to their opinion on level of difficulty and expense with these cars. My experience may be different from others. Especially with inoperative vehicles it is nice to have a bit of extra time to wait for the right shipper or to plan a weekend around picking it up in person. The car is in a safe place covered in a locked yard. Title is from North Carolina signed and open for the next owner to fill out. No blemishes or mistakes.
