Vehicle Detail
1961 Ford F-100 Step-Side What It Is: This is my 1961 Ford F-100 step-side, short-bed pick-up truck. It’s pretty much all original and ready to drive as-is, or to restore. Mileage is unknown, but runs well. Recent History: I bought this truck about 2 ½ years ago right here on eBay. I wanted an older Ford truck to restore and this one was pretty original, plus it came with lots of extra parts that would be needed in the restoration. Although the truck was drivable (Missouri to Texas), I had the truck shipped to me. I am very glad that I had it shipped, as it is geared VERY low. It would have been a pretty slow trip back to Texas. Here’s What Happened: When I got the truck, I was amazed at its condition. It was basically untampered with over the decades. It looked like it just came off the farm. It had rust on the floorboard, cab corners, interior cab entry steps, and rear bumper – and that rust was all the way through the metal. On the other hand, the wood oak bed was in good shape, as was the interior, dashboard, body panels, - even the glass cab lights were good. All the stuff was there, plus plenty extra parts to make this an excellent restoration project, without buying a lot of expensive replacement parts. Time to get busy, I thought. I repaired the floorboard by cutting out the small rust area and replacing it with fiberglass. The rust area did not warrant welding in a new floorboard. The floor was sealed, repainted, and insulated. A new rubber floor mat was ordered and installed. The floorboard was done J Then it hit me! Preserve, don’t restore. The original oak bed is way cooler than replacement oak. The old red patina paint looks fantastic and stands out in a crowd of restored vintage trucks at the show. Who could replace that vintage cooling fan and old compass mounted on the metal dash? I was getting people stopping by the house to get a picture of the truck. I had a young couple pay me to use the truck in their wedding pictures. A household in the neighborhood decorated it with a Santa Clause and put lights on it for the holidays last year. I just could not go on with destroying all that history. I decided to leave it all alone. It was far too cool to restore, in my opinion. After all, it runs great! That straight six is the quietest engine I’ve ever heard. I’ve had many restored cars and trucks over the years, and this “preservation” gets more attention, comments, and cash offers that the restored Ford trucks that I have had over the years. A Saturday morning trip to Tractor Supply can gather a small crowd. General Condition & Cool Stuff: Mechanically, the truck needs very little. Priority one would be to bleed the brakes, possible new brake shoes too. The clutch is fully functional and tranny shifts fine through all 4 speeds and reverse is fine, but at some point you’ll want to adjust the throw, or replace the clutch. Steering is fully functional, but with plenty of slop (like an old Ford truck). No over-heating issues or fluid leaks. The truck can be driven most anywhere. The one area to avoid would be the Interstate Highway, in my opinion. The truck is geared very low, so top speed is not all that fast (maybe 65-70 mph with a tail wind). I’ve never had the truck over 60mph, really. I think the highway speed limit was 60mph when this truck hit the market. The truck does not smoke at all, even on start-up. The choke is manual on the dash, and there is a manual throttle as well. All work fine. All the glass is original and good, but the windows rattle inside their tracks, and when they are rolled down. The GLASS cab lights are perfect, unbrokenThe old oak bed remains strong, intact, but fully weathered. Id’ leave it alone. I have never seen a flatbed with original wood before on one of these old Fords. The interior looks like a time capsule. Even the cardboard headliner is intact. The “boodelin’” knob is from the sixties, like the fan, compass, and 4-speed (w/ granny gear). Most gauges work some of the time. The truck is fully functional & drives well (for a 53 year old truck). The brakes are soft and it rattles like a some b*@#h but is perfectly happy around town and drives thru the country. The truck is registered as antique in Texas and was not required to have a Texas state inspection. I insure it as an antique so it’s legal to drive. Cost is about $125 / yr. Want To Restore? If you decide to take the plunge and bring this truck to showroom new, It can be done. The auction includes the following parts, some are new, some are used. All need to be cleaned and painted for a full restoration. These parts are in boxes that will fit in the back of the truck. I’ll gather them all and ship them with the truck. Here’s a list : Extra Used Items / Parts: door hinges and hinge access covers, wipers, wiper switch, rear view mirror, 2 vents, chrome horn button, seat belts, gas pedal, 2 hubcaps, head light buckets and retaining rings, transmission hump, fuel pump, wind window removed from door, radiator, heater box, head light trim frames, one inner fender wheel well, battery tray, tail gate chains, bumper brackets, a big bucket of ford bolts, washers, and clips. Brand New Parts (mostly from LMS & Dennis Carpenter): Steering column floor seal, 2 parking light lens gaskets, 30’ fender welt seal, dome light lens, rubber for tail gate chains, 2 door glass ant-rattlers, window channel, cowl lacing, door /cab seals, glove box knob, mirror bracket hole plugs, 2 gas tank neck grommets, cab-to-frame pad and bolt kit, 4 FOMOCO tail light lenses. Not all of these parts are in new boxes but some are. New Sheet Metal Parts (surface rust from sitting outside): cab corner sheet metal, running board steps, running board risers, rocker panels, one cab support. In total, I’d guess there’s about $1000 in extra parts and oodles of time saved. Why Sell? I changed my mind on the restoration but have enjoyed it nearly 3 years “as is”. Time to move on. I have an older BMW motorcycle that I want to restore now. What You Get: You get the truck and whole truck bed full of extra parts listed above, one key, and a clear Texas title. You even get the Barry Goldwater bumper sticker on the back. Want to See It ? The truck is for sale locally too, so if you do want to see it….no problem. Just message me through eBay Terms: We’ll need a $500 deposit on the truck within 24 hours of winning the auction, The balance will need to be paid within 5 days or so. Green cash still works well, but a cashier’s check does too as long as it clears. No cleared funds, no truck. Contact: If you have questions, just email me through eBay.
