1960 Dodge D100 Flat Bed Truck The history of the truck as I know it: According to the previous owner, this truck was stored in a closed container by the original owner in the San Francisco Bay Area MANY years ago with the intention of restoring the truck when he retired. Unfortunately, he passed away before his dream became a reality. This was evidenced by the lack of rust in the cab floorboards and door bottoms. This truck is believed to have 26,242 original miles as indicated by the speedometer reading (plus roughly an additional 25 miles since my purchase). I purchased this truck from a gentleman here in California who purchased this truck from the original owner. He in turn restored this truck to its current condition. The cab was removed from the frame in order to complete the restoration process. The cab was prepped inside/out and painted in a two-tone color scheme. The frame was also prepped and painted black. The previous owner spent nearly $18,000 in labor/parts and it shows. After purchasing this truck I started making enhancements. My goal was to continue down this path. However, I have decided to focus on my other hot rods and forgo this project. I am going to lose money on this deal. But that is okay. I want this truck to go to someone who will appreciate it for what it is. She is old, rare, and in great shape! Everyone who walks past it comments on how nice she is. And I agree. Although the new owner could drive this truck just the way she sits, there are a few "minor" issues that the new owner may want to consider addressing. These minor issues are addressed below. I have thought long and hard about what price I should sell this truck at. I have taken into consideration the “minor” issues that I would address as the new owner. Therefore, I have set a $6,000 “reserve” with a $7,000 “Buy It Now” price. I have no intention on gouging any potential buyer and would be more satisfied knowing that the buyer got a good deal than padding my wallet. I am an honest person and have described this truck to the best of my knowledge and ability. I have listed the positives and negatives as I know them. It is possible that I may have missed a detail here and there. For that reason, I highly encourage you to ask all questions in advance of bidding/purchasing or have the truck personally inspected by you or an associate. It is my intent to make every effort to ensure that your experience in the purchase of this truck is positive. With that said, this truck is sold “as is” and a “return” will “not” be accepted. In addition, there is no implied “warranty.” I have a clear title. Shipping arrangements and costs are the responsibility of the buyer. I will provide assistance to the buyer by working with the selected transportation company. Keep in mind that there are squeaks, sounds, and rattles that go with a 54 year old truck. With that said, this truck has "really" good bones, is in "great" shape, and ready to be driven and appreciated for years to come. All of the “hard” work has been done. I believe you will not be disappointed. The following is a description of the truck. · Original mileage 26,242 (roughly 25 additional miles since my purchase) · Original engine, which is rare. They called the Poly 318 a “semi-hemi” due to its head design. · Engine blows a tad bit of smoke at start up and dissipates once started. I have not experienced any other oil burn. I believe the rings are in great shape. · I do not believe it has ever been rebuilt. Due to its age and originality, the intake manifold/bolts show signs of "minor" fluid leaks. With that said, they are minor. It was one of my goals to replace the major gaskets at some point down the road. According to the previous owner, the cylinders were scoped (through the spark plug holes) and cross-hatch honing marks were still apparent on the cylinder walls. I believe this to be true as the oil pressure stays steady at 50 psi. These leaks are minor and will not prohibit daily use of this truck. · Small oil leak at rear main seal area. The cause may be the rear main seal or oil pan gasket. I never got around to confirming. I noticed it after removing the flywheel cover before painting it. It was not significant. · Ignition timing set at 10 degrees BTDC (service manual recommendation). It is steady and does not bounce. Indicates timing chain is in great condition. · Oil pressure line leaks at intake manifold. The previous owner installed the plastic tubing type pressure line from the manifold to the gauge. It was obviously not installed correctly. I have two different style pressure lines to fix the problem, which will be provided with the sale. One copper line and one braided rubber line (top quality). I recommend this repair and will leave it to the buyer. · Strong manifold vacuum. · One pump of the gas pedal (when cold) and turn of the ignition key and the engine has started for me every time. It has never let me down. · Great idle. · Great throttle response. · This engine is a torque monster! You could tow/haul just about anything with this engine/gear ratio setup. · Professionally rebuilt Ford Motorcraft 2100/2150 carburetor installed using a custom aluminum 2-barrel adapter and electric choke. This carburetor was professionally rebuilt/tuned specifically for this engine. HUGE improvement over the Stromberg 2-barrel carburetor that was on it. This particular Motorcraft carburetor woke this engine up in a significant way! · New spark plugs (gapped at .36). · New plug wires with one mismatched wire (#7). · Washable air filter element (K&N oil used) with aluminum top/base. · Custom made Poly aluminum valve covers. (Custom made in Australia and valued at $500 for the set) · Pertronix electronic ignition with stock distributor. One of the best enhancements made. · Pertronix ignition coil/chrome mount. · New battery. · New Flaming River battery disconnect switch hidden behind front bumper. · New battery/ground cables (4 AWG). · New body/engine ground cable (4 AWG). · New front rubber engine mount. Motor mount support and timing tab removed, stripped, and repainted. Looks great! Timing tabs are now easily visible. · New flex fan. · New water pump. · New radiator hoses/clamps. · New Wix coolant filtration system. · Radiator is original and was recored by the previous owner and does not leak. It was one of my goals to eventually flush the cooling system. In the meantime, I installed the Wix coolant filtration system designed and used on diesel trucks. I drained the coolant and flushed the radiator before installing the system. This Wix system uses a spin-on filter (no additive chemicals), which will clean out and maintain the coolant system. I have used this exact system before and have firsthand knowledge that it works. I am a big fan. Wix recommends replacing the spin-on filter every 500-1000 miles until system is thoroughly cleaned. · New Moroso oil/air separator. · Keeps oil residue out of the intake manifold delivered by the PCV. · New fresh air tubing in engine compartment. · Manual 4-speed transmission with stump puller 1st gear. · 4th gear is deemed to be an overdrive gear and is only used at higher speeds. Truck is started in 2nd gear and shifted into 3rd gear when driving within the city. · Inspected/serviced with new oil by previous owner. · New clutch installed by previous owner (works great). However, roughly 1 out of every 10 starts there is a squeal that comes and goes from what sounds like the throw-out bearing. I have not confirmed this. Once the engine starts and you rev it one time, it goes away. · Up-shifts smoothly. · Down-shifts smoothly. However, second gear synchro does grind occasionally when down shifting. I have been told this was common even when the truck was new. Makes sense to me based on the truck’s low mileage. · Original driveshaft was high-speed balanced/painted and installed with new universal joints/straps/fasteners/clips. · 4.10 ring & pinion ratio. · Previous owner had gear oil drained/replaced. · The “pumpkin” is a 741 case. Aftermarket ring & pinion setups available with 3.55 gear ratio. You could also change the “pumpkin” and install a “freeway” gear ratio. · New brakes on all four wheels (according to previous owner). · The brakes are manual and stop the truck as designed. There is no pulsation in the pedal under use. · New brake master cylinder. · Rear brake lines are new. Other sections are original and show exterior signs of surface rust. Master cylinder rubber hose is not new. · There is no evidence of any leakage. · Brake pedal is firm. · New clutch cylinder. · Slave master cylinder has a small leak at boot, which drips over time. This part sells for roughly $23 new and is a simple fix. · The pressure line show signs of surface rust. · Clutch works well and the pedal is firm. · Front and rear suspension rebuilt with new bushings. · There is an occasional “clunk” when driving the truck hard over a bump. Every bolt/clamp/fastener/nut has been inspected and torqued. Everything is tight and secure. As far as I know, this sound may be normal for a truck driven back in 1960. I never considered it to be a major issue, so I did not inspect any further. · A few of the steering grease joints have ripped/torn dust boots. It was another one of my goals to replace them. All suspension parts are greased and unaffected. Suspension looks good and is in great shape. · New wheels/tires. · They were “static” balanced (weights on inside of rim only). I prefer my wheels/tires to be road force balanced. This was another one of my goals. Truck drives smooth with the current setup. · These are big tires on a big truck. · New paint (interior/exterior). · A good paint job overall. The blue paint appears to have been color sanded and buffed. This paint job is not considered a ”ten footer." It looks good up close and feels smooth. I would rate it a "better than average" paint job. The painter elected not to paint certain areas on the underside of the cab/wheel wells. This was another one of my goals to improve upon. Overall, the underside of this truck looks great. I have a small amount of leftover blue paint for touch ups. · Small chips where hood closes/door strikers/hood striker/exterior driver door frame (and possible other areas). · Flat bed frame has some “use” scratches. · New interior. · Seats recovered in same two-tone blue/white. · Custom white headliner installed (original headliner was cardboard). · New door panels. The top of each panel has a "minor" warp that could be fixed with one more screw. · New floor carpet. In addition, black carpet was installed behind seat. · Gauges. · Speedometer is not working. Previous owner indicated speedometer cable broke just before I made purchase. I will provide two replacements. It was my goal to replace all of the gauges. · Water temperature gauge is not working. New sender installed in intake manifold. However, the gauge is not wired. Previous owner indicated the gauge worked at one time. Again, it was my goal to replace all of the gauges. · Turn Signals. · The turn signals work at the dash and rear tail light. They are not wired at the front. Wires are capped and ready for wiring to be completed. · The turn signal lever at the steering column is somewhat sloppy. It works. However, it should be tighter. · Wipers. · Works as designed. Never had to use other than test. · Horn. · Steering wheel horn button removed. It was painted by previous owner. Spring and wire adapter will be provided with sale. · Steering Wheel. · It is not installed straight and has stress/fatigue cracks. Sturdy otherwise. · The hold-down nut is missing. I purchased a replacement, which will be provided with sale. Based on my research, I believe the threads to be 3/4-20. It was one of my goals to remove/straighten the steering wheel. For that reason, I left the cap and nut removed. · Steering column rattles a tad when driving down bumpy road. · Manual steering box, which is functional and shows no signs of concern. · Tracks straight down the road with no pull. · Vent Windows. · Rubber seals are original and shows sign of wear. This was another one of my goals to replace. · Worn rubber seals prevent vent windows from closing tightly. · Frame and parts of undercarriage, including differential/axle housing were painted black. · Looks really nice! · Treated lumber on flat bed with partial railing. · Looks good. Wood rails are a hardwood and could be refinished. Bed slats have rough edges and could be sanded. Rail hardware was powder coated by the previous owner and stainless fasteners used. Looks good. · Door windows roll up and down without any resistance. · New front windshield/rubber seal. · New rear window rubber seal. · New door seals. · Door handles function properly and doors close with no issues. · The ignition key does not work on the door locks and there is no key for the door locks. One exterior door lock has a swiveling cover. The other door lock is missing this cover. · Center interior shift hump replaced with new sheet metal and was done properly. · Generator rebuilt and charges battery as designed. · New accessory belt (included is one replacement). · Starter rebuilt. · It is occasionally noisy. With that said, it ALWAYS turns the engine over with no difficulty. I have been told this is common with the old Dodge starters. What I do know is the starter does its job every time without any problem. · New heater core (as indicated by previous owner). · The heater fan works great. However, the heater in the cab does not blow hot air. There are two cables associated with the manual control mechanism, one of which is disconnected and feeds through the firewall into the engine bay. The heater hoses do get hot once the engine warms up to operating temperature. I had not got around to diagnosing the problem. · Original chrome heater knob is missing. Previous owner placed rubber sleeve over adjustment arm. · New aftermarket door side-view mirrors. · They were not installed in the original location. · Previous owner plugged original mirror holes with stainless fasteners. Looks good. · New canister/cartridge (Fram style) fuel filter setup in advance of fuel pump fastened to underside of front frame. Replacement filters available at any auto parts store. · New front parking/turn signal lenses. · Housing was treated for rust and painted. They are not wired. They are prepped & ready to be wired. · New radiator hoses/clamps/cap (7 pound) for overflow use. · New thermostat housing/thermostat (180 degrees). · Original bypass fitting not replaced and showed signs of wear. Treated for rust/painted and reused with no problems. · Radiator overflow bottle. · New plastic battery tray/fasteners. · Battery tray area treated for surface rust and painted. · New fuel tank. · Fuel line from tank to fuel/filter/pump shows signs of surface rust. New line will be provided. · Body Gaps. · Front hood/fender gaps could use better alignment. Hood opens/closes as designed (no issues). I installed proper hood bumpers (10 pieces). · Doors open/close as designed and are aligned properly. · Door hinges could be lubed as they are noisy when opening door all the way (minor). · Electrical Wiring. · Original wiring throughout. · Some wiring replaced. · Wiring that was replaced/spliced could have been done at a higher standard. Again, this was another one of my goals to improve upon. · Passenger side orange marker light does not work. May need wiring fix or new light bulb. · Only one ignition key (previous owner indicated it was original). · Exhaust System. · New exhaust pipes from exhaust manifolds to tips. · New dual inlet/outlet original style canister muffler. Looks fantastic! Top quality setup. Original service manual, information booklet, and custom fit outdoor 5 layer truck cover will be provided with sale. Thank you for looking at my auction. Please reach out to me with any questions as I will respond quickly and precisely. If you would like specific pictures, let me know and I will be happy to oblige. Have a great day! Rich Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE On Nov-11-14 at 19:22:29 PST, seller added the following information: UPDATE: The dash gauge lights do not work. I never attempted to resolve this issue as it was my goal to replace the gauges, which are original. The "Dodge" hood emblem on the passenger side broke in the middle. It would be a simple fix using epoxy. I will leave this to the new owner who may have other ideas. I have had several inquiries about the health of this engine. I have owned this truck for a short period of time. The only noted engine issues I am aware of are the initial oil burn at start up and the minor fluid leaks as noted in the aforementioned description. Other than that, this engine fires up, idles and accelerates well. If I was to keep this truck, I would add 20% Lucas Oil Stop Leak at the next oil change to treat the valve guides/rear main seals. Keep in mind that this is the original engine. It is believed that this engine has never been rebuilt. The original spark plugs removed were healthy and only showed signs of an over rich carburetor. The timing mark burn on each spark plug showed proper timing at 10 degrees BTDC with a 30 degree total advance. Other than the initial oil burn at start up, there was no sign of any internal concerns. As originally described, it was my intent to tear this engine down and replace ALL of the minor/major gaskets. With that said, this is an OLD RARE ORIGINAL engine. The oil pan dipstick is new. The carburetor return spring bracket was fabricated by me. The second owner spent more than $18,000 restoring this truck. If you purchased this truck at $6,000 you would be paying $0.30 on each dollar spent to complete the restoration. Also keep in mind that all of the hard work has been done. It is just now a matter of tinkering and/or taking care of a few minor issues. : - ) On Nov-11-14 at 19:44:19 PST, seller added the following information: ANOTHER UPDATE: I have lowered the Buy It Now and Reserve price as follows: Buy It Now price has been lowered to $5,500.00Reserve price has been lowered to $5,000.00 This truck is priced to sell and be enjoyed by a new owner. : - ) On Nov-12-14 at 18:52:15 PST, seller added the following information: UPDATE: I have "removed" the "reserve price". Based on eBay policy, I have to reset the reserve price to $1 above the highest bidder to ensure he/she is still interested in the truck. Take advantage of my willingness to sell this truck at any price : - ) On Nov-12-14 at 18:57:48 PST, seller added the following information: UPDATE: The new reserve price is $3551.00 based on the aforementioned eBay policy requirement. Thanks : - ) On Nov-12-14 at 19:10:13 PST, seller added the following information: UPDATE: Buy It Now has been lowered to $4,500.00 : - )
