(Note: Please see the bottom of this description for a list of extra parts included with this auction) This 1970 Opel GT offers a solid foundation for a restoration project. It is a GT which is largely in original condition. The car has not been hacked on and it has few modifications. The only ones I am aware of (performed by the previous owner) are replacement of the Solex carburetor with a Weber, replacement of the side-view mirror and installation of stereo speakers. The body is straight, although the car does have some rust in some of the usual GT locations (see pictures). The floor pans appear to be solid. There is a small dent on the left front nose area which is not pictured. The Opel emblem on the nose of the car is loose and has been placed inside the car (the mounting clips are included). Also, from lack of use, the ignition key lock takes a bit of effort to turn, but it has already starting to free up. I last drove this car in 1990. At the time, it drove nicely, with a good transmission and good power from the high compression (9:1) 1.9L engine. Since then, the car had been stored in a carport and had not been started for nearly 24 years. I siphoned and pumped the old gas from the tank, performed an oil and filter change and installed new spark plugs. I was able to start the car and run the engine. However, the engine is "idling" at about 3000 RPM and is not running as smoothly as it should. The entire fuel system really needs to be cleaned properly. One of the last pictures (above) shows the oil pressure and charging rate when the engine was briefly run. The car has a clean title. The clutch appears to be operational, as I was able to engage it in first gear and smoothly move the car. The brake fluid reservoir is still holding fluid. However, the brakes were not operational when I tried them. The car can be pushed by hand relatively easily, though. Also, the starter solenoid is sticking. Sometimes, it engages and, sometimes, it does not, in which case, I was able to free it by gently tapping it. But, that is only a temporary measure and a new solenoid is needed. The rear tires are brand new (Sumitomo HTR T4 P185/70R13), but need balancing. The front tires need replacement. The car does not have a battery installed. I was not able to roll the headlights, although I did not try to free them. When the car was stored in 1990, the headlight mechanism was operable. The car will need to be towed or transported on a trailer. The odometer shows 78K miles. When we purchased the car in 1990, we assumed that the odometer must have rolled over once. Hence, we reported 178K miles to the DMV at the time and this is what is shown on the title. However, I have since found a service receipt from 1984, showing around 60K miles, so it is unclear, and the car likely has only 78K miles on it.
