Vehicle Detail
History, General Condition We have owned this 1985 Volkswagen Vanagon Westfalia Camper since 1995 and park it in our carport. It has not been hacked on or modified! (With exception of driving lights added to front bumper.) No accidents, and all original drivetrain. Paint, Body As delivered with the 1985 Bronze Beige Metallic paint option, the camping pop-top is actually slightly off white in a color VW called "nut brown". The fiberglass top is in great shape (see photo). The body has small dents, scratches, and oxidizing (factory original) paint but only minor rust. The most significant rust is at the seams near the utility hookups on the left side. Underneath, inside the wheel wells, and around the gas tank looks really nice. Again, please see photos. Also underneath, you'll catch a glimpse of the old propane tank. We never used this, and even if it were not for the rust on it, the original tank is not safe to use or up to 2003 regulations and would need to be replaced. The vanagon side mirrors are known to be a weak spot, and we have been unable to get a matching brown mirror for the passenger side. Your solution will probably be to buy two black replacement mirrors from busdepot for about $20 each. There is also a slight leak in the clear "sun roof" in the pop top that needs to be repaired. Interior The interior is light beige (and brown). The carpet/floor mat in the kitchen has been removed so that the extra middle seat could be installed. For our use, we found it useful to remove and store that seat and the second table and not keep them in the vehicle. That center piece of carpet is worn and stained, but in all the rest of the interior there are no tears, burns, or stains in any of the upholstery, door panels, or headliner. It is in amazing condition for a camper of this age. Drivetrain The 4 speed manual transmission shifts well into all gears and the clutch feels fine. The first owner had 2 rebuilt heads installed at 109,000 miles.. The engine starts, idles, and runs fine. Acceleration seems average, and is smooth and without hesitation. As would be the case with any ~30 year old vehicle, a general tune up and checking things like spark plugs and fuel hoses is advisable before any long trips. The van comes with four new Yokohama Supervan 356 tires. The new fronts need to be mounted still. The rears have been put on. These are the (only?) correct tires for vanagons with camping equipment due to load, and are great handling tires in general. Camping Equipment This van is great for all sorts of situations, from day trips to surviving the zombie apocalypse. As mentioned, some work would be required to get the propane working. Also, we've never used the faucet. It has a loose switch on top and is not functioning. We only ever used the fridge by putting ice in it. The van comes with all the original curtains, including the one for the front windshield, rear insect net, and comfortable beds that have only rarely been used, and only by non-smoking owners without pets. We have greatly enjoyed owning and taking care of this wonderful, uniquely designed, multi-purpose van! See photo below. On Aug-02-14 at 10:59:58 PDT, seller added the following information: Camping Equipment: Here is some more information on the state of the kitchen. We rarely used the kitchen for anything in the last 20 years. As you can tell from the photos below, there is very little use and the whole interior is in great shape. The interior light works, the outlets work when I connected "shore power" ... ... The stove burners look great ... the water tank holds water but pressing the loose wired switch at the faucet does not do anything. Don't know what the issue is there ... ... And the fridge gets cold with 120V! I did not test the 12V option (there is no aux battery installed under the drivers seat) and the propane option will require the new propane tank. In the inset in the photo, you can see the kill-a-watt reporting about 100Watts used while the fridge was on and getting cold. . Thanks for looking, and good luck bidding! On Aug-02-14 at 19:15:20 PDT, seller added the following information: Update 2: New spark plugs, air filter, and fuel filter. Engine will be due for an oil change soon, too. But today I did a little tune up. "Average power" in the original description does not really do it justice! With new plugs, it now has as much power as any vanagon I've driven. It pulls up the hills nicely, with full power. With all its camping gear, it accelerates as well as most stock non-camping vanagons do without that weight. On Aug-03-14 at 11:37:46 PDT, seller added the following information: Update 3: Cleaning up and found more things that go with the van... We did not tow anything with the van, but as I found a tow hitch that goes with it! Winner of the auction will also get this hitch, a nice thick cable for the 120V electrical hook-up, and a great looking original jack, pictured.
