Vehicle Detail
1981 VW Westfalia Vanagon from California Scroll down for details, You can call/text 321-987-1750 for info or offers. Stored indoors winters and driven in summer. New engine!! with 5k miles since install. Has both tables and rear hatch screen. Pop top with good canvas, only a few small holes in the canvas. Zip-open window in top bunk and top bed in good shape, screen needs sewn at bottom seam. Rear foldout bed and closets, Gas stove and 3 way fridge (untested) SUPER solid undercarriage with none of the typical rust. I also have the original curtains. Runs and drives very well but it IS an old car, it doesn't drive like a new car. Don't ask if it will make it across the country, there is no way of knowing if something will break BUT there is nothing in this van that I have detected that suggests it needs replacing aside from what is listed. The tires look good with good deep tread and no signs of distress. I have a new muffler that comes with it, although it may be installed soon. Has new plugs, wires and tune-up items, new rear hatch struts, new top top seals, new side mirrors, new sliding door handle (keys match), new thermostat installed. Front seats swivel too! The CV boots look good but one rip in the inner passenger side boot. Just a rip and not gaping. The steering bellows are there but they are both cracked completely around them. The tie rod ends are decent but drivers side outer boot is cracked. The speedometer doesn't seem to be accurate and is probably reading high but it is hard to tell because the engine is too quiet to gauge the rpms/speed by ear. I checked for play in the tie rods and they seem real tight. I have the new muffler an tailpipe installed. QUESTION LIST----- Corrosion on the fuse block contacts - No corrosion, they look good and clean. - Do the idiot lights appear to be functioning (the overheating one is especially of interest, hah) Yes, this model does not have an overheat light, but the oil pressure light is working and 02 light and alternator light work. has new O2 sensor and oil pressure sender. Fresh oil change with 20w50 Castrol GTX. - Condition of brakes and rubber hoses All look good and are pliable, no cracks or if they have cracks they are tiny. - There's a section of the fuel line where it passes through in to the engine compartment. These apparently get old/brittle and set things on fire. Any signs of this having been replaced? Both the supply line and return lines are good and pliable rubber where it meets the firewall. - Condition of the battery box area(s) under the seat(s): any signs of boil-overs, etc? the battery box is solid with surface rust on the sides, battery looks great and is dated 4-12 - I'm under the assumption it smells like an old VW inside, nothing mold, nothing less? it smells like an old vw, it smells like hot, old air when the heater boxes are open, no gas or mold or funk smells, 2 of the bottom vent sliders arent working but the lines look in tact below the dash and you are able to articulate them manually for fresh air. - Take a peek in the radio opening and see if you can tell if the radio wires were cut or if it was just removed. It looks like an aftermarket radio was installed but done respectably, the hole looks to have been enlarged a bit? See attached pics. - Spare tire, jack, etc. condition Has jack and spare tire, I have to remove the spare to check for pressure soon. - Are all locks alike and/or functioning? Yes, one key does all doors and ignition. - Paint...I just downloaded the full res images and it looks like original paint as far as I can tell...except there's what looks to be a paint line around the antenna gasket in that one shot. But I could also see that being wax or something maybe as well. Would you be able to verify that one way or the other? Chips, dents, dings, etc are honest...you never know what paint is covering, haha. The paint looks original as i dont see any seams or tape lines anywhere. The white spot by the antenna seems to be a scratch down to primer. I just replaced the old antenna with this new one in the picture. It has a few more dings, one in the back driver side above the tail light, a small crease in the front passenger side nose above the bumper an abrasion behind the sliding door (see pics). I tried to get a shot of the small paint chip/rust bloom but it is hard to get a shot since they are so small. Rear bumper is bent on the drivers side - How deep is the crease on the driver's door? Does the leading edge pop up from the front sheetmetal? It doesn't look too bad but it's a straight on shot and only one of that side so hard to tell for sure. I took pics and i put my hand in the shot for a scale reference. Message me for pics - Pop top: you said you painted it? Or were you able to get it cleaned up? I forget which you said was the outcome! I pressure washed it then sprayed it with a can, it look decent but it looks better now bright white. - I'm assuming if you had the 4th hubcap it would be on there. :) I do not have the 4th hubcap On May-11-14 at 07:52:25 PDT, seller added the following information: More info!!! Thanks for all the questions, I am posting all of the answers here. And more pics of questioned areas The fuzzy inside of the pop top is very clean, see pics. Floors are solid as well as undercarriage, no surface rust to be found by my inspection. I have added pics of the rear bumper and rear corner dent. Added pics of chipping paint and rust on sides Added pics of battery tray... Added detail of pop top corner break Added pic of front driver seat wear. Passenger side is good.
