This big-shoe monster is built for extreme off-road, rock climbing and has lately been used as an all around hunting vehicle. The class 5 wheeler is no “street queen” and has dings and light scratches from some of the roughest trails in southern Arizona. She’s spartan by most Jeep TJ owner’s standards since the crawler has no back seat, no AC or heater, no carpet, no mud flaps, no windshield wipers, no spare tire, no air bags and she will haul only two people. This Jeep has excellent highway manners, tracks straight and true even on paved roads, no wobble and no side torque roll with the Rubicon long arm suspension even with the massive 40-inch rock tires. The high torque inline straight-six pulls like new and is the last year of production for this bullet proof engine. The six speed tranny works very well with the super low granny gear when locked and loaded in 4-low. This TJ has 90 degree departure angles front and rear to climb vertical rock walls, nothing can stop it. Even the expensive remote control thermo Warn winch is designed to function under water, (never tried to do this, since there’s no deep trail puddles in Southern AZ). No rust anywhere in the tub or suspension since the lo-mileage crawler has only been exploring the dry Southwest. This 4x4 will leave any Rubicon in its wake, no contest. The saving grace is that this machine is civilized and can be driven on pavement and city streets when not on the tough trails. She really gets the looks from the other off-road want-to-be’s. I’m getting a little long-in-the-tooth and can barely haul my great bulk up the 37 inch door sill height, so it’s time to move it along to another enthusiast. If you plan on trailering this rig, a minimum seven-foot-wide hauler will be necessary to accommodate the stretched 104” wheel base and 79” wide stance of the forties.
