Vehicle Detail
1964 CORVETTE COUPE BIRDCAGE ON 1974 ROLLING CHASSIS WITH TITLE & TAGS – RESTOMOD PROJECT CAR Up for auction is a 1964 Corvette Coupe Birdcage project car which would be ideal for a Restomod project car. The birdcage is mounted to a 1974 and up rolling chassis. I bought this project car ten years ago with the intent to build a Grand Sport Restomod Replica, but current restoration project cars leave no time to build this project and I could use the extra storage space. A few years ago I sold the title and tags to a friend who wanted a Corvette title & tags for one of his project cars. He subsequently sold that project to a buyer who did not need the title & tags for his project, so I ended up getting the title and tags back for this car. These are the original tags for this car as I removed them from the cage. In 1964 the VIN tag was just spot welded to the dash frame cross member, so it is a simple matter to spot weld it back in place, so the special rivets used in 1965 and up are not required to attach the plate. The Trim tag was attached with standard Pop rivets originally. This project car is on a clear and clean Indiana Title. I have included a rear coupe body tub from my bone yard of parts which can be grafted onto the cage floor pan. Either the tub will need to be altered or the frame altered for it to fit if this later style frame is used due to the gussets on the frame at the rear kick ups. Also if this frame is used a new rear frame section would need to be spliced into the frame as the rear portion of the frame is incorrect for a mid-year C2 car due to the configuration and shock mounts for the impact rear bumper used in 1974 and later. I was going to use a tube type frame for my project originally and sell the chassis as I would not have used it. Rather than sell the bird cage and frame as separate units I have decided to sell it as one unit as I purchased it. The VIN is 40837S107237. The data from the trim tag is as follows as my photo of it did not come out clearly. The Body build code is D16 (December 16th, 1963). Style 64 837 (1964 Coupe). Trim code 490CA (Saddle Vinyl). Body #3006 (St. Louis body). Paint 932AA (Saddle Tan). The bird cage itself is in reasonable condition but of course needs some work on it. The driver’s side drip rail is rusted out and will need to be replaced. The drip rails are available as reproductions and a skilled body man can cut out the old and weld in the new ones. The passenger side drip rail is not as bad and could either be repaired or replaced. The windshield frame appears to be in reasonable condition. The cage will need to be dimensionally checked out to see if it needs to be massaged as one door does not fit well. This could be due to either the cage twisted or the door itself. The doors need some work as the outer skins are starting to delaminate from the inner structure of the doors and will need to be properly bonded back on. There are also some extra rivets in the doors in the hinge areas which are pulling the fiberglass out of shape slightly, so this could be affecting the door fits. The fiberglass firewall is in good condition and still shows the original St. Louis body build sequence number of 305. The rear door posts will also need some work due to a couple of rust through areas. This is not a project for the faint of heart, but then anyone getting involved in a restomod project should know what they are facing in such a project. This birdcage and chassis is just the raw starting point in building up such a project car. Check the photos closely.
