Low Miles! Perfect 964! Red Exterior / Tan Interior VIN: WP0CB2968LS471512 2 Doors, Rear Wheel Drive, Convertible, 6 Cylinders, Automatic Inventory ID: 471512 Vehicle Description Prior to 1989, Porsche had released two basic generations or versions of its hallmark car: the 1964-1973 911 (Gen 1) and the 1974-1989 911 (Gen 2). Each generation maintained the same essential body shell while making technological changes "under the skin," i.e., engine displacement, transmission modifications, etc. In 1989, Porsche introduced its third generation of the 911 - the Porsche 964. The car was the first truly modern 911 and came with a host of technological revolutions that were entirely absent from its predecessors including: On board computer display screen;Coil springs and shock absorbers in the rear (not torsion bars);Power steering;Automatic climate control;A competent A/C system;Dual airbags;Integrated bumpers and fog lights;Full time four wheel drive; andAn automatic PDK transmission. In comparison to its immediate predecessor - the 1989 Carerra 3.2 - the 1989 964 Carerra 4 was not an evolution of the 911, Rather, it was a revolution with 85 percent of the 964s components being new to production. The most salient innovations of the 964 were its engine, its transmission, and its four wheel drive system. The engine was designated as the M64 and came in three basic variants (/01, /02 and /03). Each variant carried a 3.6 litre displacement, utilized electronic fuel injection and was controlled by a DME. The M64/02 version used in the 1990 Carrerra 2 was capable of producing 247 horsepower and could achieve a top speed of roughly 159 mph. While respectable by modern Porsche standards, this engine produced 40 more horsepower than the Carerra 3.2 and was a major achievement for the time. The engine utilized twin, belt driven distributors (which fed electricity to two spark plugs per cylinder), and required a massive quantity of oil (12 quarts) to remain lubricated and cooled. The engine had two major flaws: the twin distributors were not cooled and thus could overheat; and the cylinder heads did not have gaskets and often leaked. Outside of these two flaws, the M64 was a very good engine which performed admirably. The second innovation of the 964 was the Tiptronic transmission. This automatic transmission was the predecessor to the currently marketed PDK transmission. Like the modern version, the 964s Tiptronic transmission was also a "double clutch" which was developed from the gearbox used in the 962 Group CGT racer. It utilized a 4 speed torque converter with electronic controls that are linked to the engines electronic management system and the automatic braking system (ABS). Using data gathered from these systems, the Tiptronic selected one of five pre-programmed settings (or "maps"), which were contrantly adjusted to match the drivers driving style. The entire system could be easily by-passed by simply moving the gear selection lever to the right and then using the gear shift to manually shift gears. While this may seem rather mundane to the modern motorist, in 1990, it was a technological marvel. Many 911 purists reviled this gearbox and spent innumerable hours decrying its heretical existence. However, this criticism was unwarranted then and is unwarranted today as the Tiptonic offered some distinct advantages over a traditional manual gearbox, most noticably, the ability to use the car as a daily driver, in heavy traffic. The final innovation of the 964 was its use of a full time, four wheel drive system. The express purpose of this system was to correct the impression that the 911 was "tail happy" and hard to control at high speed or in inclement weather. There is no doubt that the four wheel drive system worked to correct both this impression and the reality underlying it. However, it was somewhat too effective and turned the most hallowed of sports cars into something that felt like a front wheel drive communter car. Again, the voices of the many 911 purists rose up decrying this heretical idea and, in 1990, one year after the appearance of the 964 C4, Porsche released the 964 Carrerra 2 which removed the four wheel drive system from the car. The removeal of the four wheel drive greatly improved the overall feel of the car and made it fall squarley within the 911 family as a spirited, rear engined, rear wheel drive sports car that could be relied on for daily purposes. Despite its revolutionary character and overall quality, the 964 is not fully appreciated in the United States (in contrast to the UK where they are highly coveted). Perhaps the reason for the 964s relative lack of appreciation is that it is sandwiched between two 911 Titans - the Carerra 3.2 and the 993. Perhaps the car was simply too revolutionary? Perhaps Americans are simply not well schooled on this particular car? Whatever the reason(s), prices for quality 964s are below what they should be and the time to buy one of these wonderful cars is before the market learns of their quality and their true value. On that subject, the car presented here is a very good example of a high quality 964. As shown in the pictures, the paint on this car truly glows and the interior, in UK parlance, is in fine nick. The drivers seat bolster does show some normal wear but it is in acceptable condition and does not need replacement. In similar fashion, the convertible top is completely servicable and does not need replacement. The cars wheels are chrome RUF Speedline rims which glisten brightly and give the car a very modern look. The car is also equipped with factory installed RS coil over shocks and comes with its original owners manual and warranty book. It also comes with an assortment of maintenance records which indicate that in 2012 over $4,000 was spent placing this car in its current, well sorted condition. The maintencnace records show the following items replaced or repaired in 2012: 4 new tires;New oil cooler hoses;New CV joint boots;New distributor car and rotor;New deck lid and hood shocks;New crankshaft seal;New valve cover gaskets;New plug wires; andComplete oil service. Further, the car was previously retro fitted with a ventilation kit for the distributors and therefore overheating should not be an issue. After I purchased the car, I simply replaced the DME sensor (as a precautionary measure only) and then had the AC system recharged with 24 ounces of R12. Since then I have personally driven the car over 500 miles and have had absolutely no issues with it. It runs, drives, stops and starts as it should. The AC system blows cold and maintains a cold temperature in the cabin even in stop and go traffic in Houston, Texas in the summer (it is routinely in excess of 90 degrees here). A note about the third brake light: many viewers of this advertisement will notice this cars absence of a third brake light (the so called "ET light" or "alien head" light). This light was required by the US regulations and in order to meet this safety requirment, Porsche simply tacked a brake light onto the rear deck lid. In all honesty, it is ugly and simply unnecessary. Therefore, a wise prior owner removed it from this car and plugged the three holes with common body filler plugs (the three black dots on the rear deck lid are the plugs). However, I purchased a new, original stock third brake light for this car and it will be sold with it. If the cars purchaser wants the brake light installed then I will gladly do so. If you like the "alien head delete" look (and I do) then you may purchase the car that way. Either way, you get the third brake light..
