Vehicle Detail
1994 Land Rover Defender 90 Up for auction is a one of a kind Land Rover Defender 90. This vehicle has been through a total frame off restoration with no expense spared. Vehicle was swapped to a factory new, NOT refurbished 300TDi engine with the correct factory brand new R380 transmission and the correct factory brand new LT230 Transfer case. The internal gears were swapped for the gas ratio to reduce engine RPM’s and increase cruising range. Typical MPG’s are in the mid 20’s. In addition to the 300TDi swap, the correct Euro engine and chassis harness were used as well as the gauge cluster. The harness was completely reworked with no expense spared to protect it. Raychem DR-25 was used through-out as well as Raychem splitter boots, weather-proof Deutsch connectors and adhesive lined heat shrink making the harness and connectors impervious to water. A factory supplied wiring diagram still remains correct as no wiring color codes were altered. Deutsch connectors were placed in lieu of the factory connectors so that the engine or the bulkhead could be removed without completely removing the entire harness. The same was applied to the fenders. Connectors were added underneath the fenders, on top of the powder-coated galvanized fender liners to aid in removal. Waterproofing did not stop there as weather-stripping and sealing were used on every panel upon reassembly, batter cables from the dual Optima batteries (one “red top” for starting and one “yellow top” for the winch) are enclosed in waterproof bulkhead connectors, custom panels for the galvanized bulkhead, dynamat on every panel and floorboard and stainless steel fasteners used through-out making this probably the driest and quietest D90 on the roads today. The 300TDi was treated to a few improvements as well including an large Allard intercooler and fiberglass nose piece. Oiling for the diesel is aided by an electronically controlled Accu-Sump system which stores oil under pressure in the event that extreme drivetrain angles cause the pickup to loose it’s prime, the accu-sump will release the oil keeping pressure high. A separate benefit to this system comes in the way that it was installed. When the key is first turned to the on position and the glowplugs are heating, the accu-sump releases the stored pressure into the oil cooler lines priming the entire system and bringing oil to the head. The engine will never start dry and engine longevity is increased. Only Amsoil and Amsoil filters were used throughout this vehicles short life. Feeding the diesel fresh air is a custom snorkel mounted on the drivers side and plumbed directly into the air filter. This is a custom built one-off unit like so much else on this one of a kind Defender. Exhaust is handled by a stainless steel magnaflow muffler and custom stainless steel piping. Engine vitals are monitored through gauges mounted in the modified Iron Goat center console including oil pressure and temperature, boost pressure and EGT’s. A very accurate aftermarket water temp gauge was used to replace the factory one in the dash. All hoses are kept in place with superior stainless steel t-bolt clamps An Auxiliary Electrical system was added to keep excessive loads off the factory components. This included adding a totally separate fuse block and relays along with battery cut off switches. This Aux system was added to provide power for the 3 Hella Black out lights, the factory headlights were re-wired through this system to increase amperage to the higher output bulbs. A rear wiper was added along with an ARB compressor mounted to the Brake Booster and hidden away. Air lines were routed underneath the rig and mounted to the frame on both sides. All controlled via the correct switch on the Iron Goat console which also houses an Alpine head unit with IPod USB interface. A new wiper motor replaced the old unit and new SIL blades as well. This Aux system also provides power for the 1500W inverter tucked neatly underneath the custom built center console which also houses an Alpine PDX-5 which powers a pair of 8” Vibe woofers in their own separate custom enclosures, Alpine 6.5” components in the doors, tweeters in the ceiling and a pair of Alpine 5.25” Co-Ax speakers in custom aluminum pods mounted up in the rear top corners. Also mounted on these pods are a pair of LED lights wired into the factory door light system to provide light in the rear. A separate toggle switch in the rear door allows the occupant to illuminate the interior of the rig without opening a door. A high wattage back-up light was added to the rear of the vehicle which will illuminate when the parking lights are active and the transmission is in reverse. There is also an override switch mounted in the Iron Goat console as well as the custom rear door panel to illuminate surroundings while camping. An aux cigarette adapter was added to the goat as well as Garmin GPS connector and Lo-Jack. A separate mounted MAG-light was wired for constant charge when the vehicle is on and is wired for an Engle Fridge (which is not included). A detachable Cobra CB was added with an antenna mounted in the rear. An Anderson power pole dual connector was mounted underneath the hood so that the vehicle could be jumped, or the operator could jump a vehicle without removing the seat and taking a pair of clamps to the batteries in an enclosed space. A custom pair of cables for this connector are supplied. A solar panel with quick disconnect mounted under the hood was installed and wired to a charging system to keep both batteries topped off. The radio and the interior lights were wired separate of the battery shutoff switches so the memory is retained and the interior lights will illuminate whenever the door is opened. The entire interior lighting circuit was redesigned and relays added to provide the brightest and most reliable power source for the interior lights that were all changed out to LED’s. The factory suspension was upgraded to a Scorpion Racing Evolution suspension kit which includes new trailing arms, spring retainers, new stainless steel brake lines, extended bump stops with Old Man Emu shocks and springs. Considerable time was spent measuring and weighing the rig to select the correct springs to give her a completely level and comfortable ride without sacrificing off-road flexibility. A factory rear sway bar was added back to reduce unwanted rolling giving the rig very nice on-road manners. An upgraded steering stabilizer was added along with a factory brand new steering box and outer tie rods. The front steering swivel pins and bearings were recently replaced along with brand new factory brake pads less than 3k miles ago. Tom Woods double cardon front driveshaft. Rear driveshaft has new Land Rover genuine u-joints. New HD Drag links from Rover Tracks. Galvanized Atlantic British front and rear diff protectors. The rig rolls on 33x12.5x15 mounted on black 15x7 Rock Crusher steel wheels. Proper backspacing allows the steering wheel to be turned lock to lock without the wheels contacting anything. The rig is painted Alpine White and surrounded by a new Safety Devices full external roll cage with Safety Devices ladder. Shcrockworks deluxe full size tire carrier with Jerry can holder and Hi-Lift Jack holder. Full size spare with a cover and storage for filthy towing gear. Both the Hi-Lift jack and jerry cans come with the rig. Mounted up top is a low profile custom roof rack with a separately available pop up tent. Nothing but stainless steel fasteners used on the outside. The front bumper is a custom built unit made out of .185” and .25” steel that was powder-coated. Electrical wiring all routed inside the tubing. The custom bumper also houses a Warn M8000 winch. The relay block was relocated underneath the fender and the control connector mounted on the fiberglass nose piece. Safari Guard rock rails with hi-lift jack mounts. European rear taillights with brush guards. Hood pins were also added in lieu of the factory latch and black diamond plate wing top protectors were added to the fenders and the hood. The interior was given a full dynamat treatment and the exterior windows sealed and reinforced to prevent rattles. There is a LaSalle fiberglass headliner eliminating worries about sagging and is water friendly. There is a sunroof. Custom leather steering wheel wrap. Badger seat covers to protect the factory seats mounted on custom rails to aid taller drivers. Custom panels mounted to the doors for the speakers. The storage boxes were dynamated and hinged to make life a little easier. The rear bench seat was removed and a custom deck was built that houses a pair of storage boxes and one storage area accessible with the rear door open. The entire unit can be removed and the bench seat reinstalled with 4 bolts. Exterior friendly yet still comfortable carpet was used. Black headed stainless steel fasteners were used throughout the interior. The vehicle was stored in doors. As you can clearly see, no amount of money, blood, sweat, tears or time was spared to create this one of a kind rig. I’m certain there are many many little details that were forgotten. Questions are always welcomed as well as reasonably requested additional photos in addition to the link to photobucket (coming soon) containing many more photos.
