Vehicle Detail
This is a RUST-FREE California ' Black Plate' car, but just so you know up front, this is a project car. It needs work, but most of the items that need to be replaced, you are going to replace anyway. There are no floor pans or sheet metal to replace on this one. Having said that, I will describe the car the very best that I can. I realize that most viewers of this ad cannot come see the car in person, so after you have read the description and looked at all the pictures (over 70), I will answer any other questions you have. I bought the car with 'sugar plums in my head', but realized that this project is one that I do not have the time to start on, or to finish. I'll break it down in sections like interior, exterior, engine etc. This car had been sitting on a carport for over 12 years when I bought it, covered with a tarp and car cover. It was originally a white car (WW-D) with a blue interior. The California black and yellow plates are original to the car, and will go with it to the new owner. The front plate is pretty banged up, but can probably be restored. Rear plate is nice. Clear California title in my name. BODY - Rust free, and I mean rust free! I went over the entire car with a magnet. There is one spot on the lower right rocker that has a skim of filler on it from what I presume was a scrape on a curb or something ...not rust. Also there is a small spot above the driver side park light ...same thing ...a skim of filler (see pictures). Only one piece of trim is missing. It is on the right rear quarter panel (see pictures). Some of the stainless trim will need to have some 'soft' dings worked out if you are going to make it perfect. Anything that is made of pot metal on this car is pitted ...from light pitting to heavy pitting (see pictures). Bumpers are still shiny but will need to be rechromed. Both bumpers have some light damage, but easily straightened by the rechrome guy. Excellent bumper guards. No dings or dents in the headlight bezels. I have an extra set of really nice used outside door handles that go with the car. Tail light bezels have some pits, but very usable. Reproduction ones are available. One front park light lens is missing. The pot metal pieces that the boot snaps on to is pitted, and one side is cracked (see pictures). These may be the hardest pieces to find and replace. Maybe they can be restored ...I'm not sure. There are a couple of dings on both rear quarters, but they look to have been made from the inside out, so I think something got thrown around inside the trunk. Easy fix. Body is extremely straight! When this thing was repainted back in the '70's to change it to red, it wasn't a MAACO or Earl Schieb job. It was done right (jambs, hood, deck lid, engine compartment, interior etc.). No rust or holes inside the cowl. No rust under the trunk lip or the hood lip. INTERIOR - Floor pans have zero rust ...only some light surface rust (see pictures). Unbelievable for a convertible! The carpet was in bad shape, so I ripped it all out, and you can now see how nice the pans are. I even removed the sealer from the recessed dimples in the floor to see if there was any rusted areas ...none. The interior of this car had a total makeover back in the '70's (my best guess). It was originally blue on the inside, and everything was changed to red. They did a super job for that era, but time has taken it's toll on everything since then, and the seat material is dry and coming apart. Also, they did not put the armrests back on the door panels, but they are available as reproductions. Radio is an aftermarket. Dash pad is gone, and they had an aftermarket dash cover stuck on there with Velcro. The pad over the instrument cluster is actually in great shape! Glove box and liner are still very nice. Sunvisors are still in place, but will need recovering. All glass is nice and fog-free. All windows roll up and down nicely. Steering wheel has been replaced (I'm sure the original was blue, and they found a red one to match the 'new' interior). Complete original jack assembly, including the post, base, hook and lug wrench. The odometer shows 53,000 miles, and judging from the gas and brake pedal wear, and the rest of the car, I'm pretty sure that is accurate. Not a known fact ...just an assumption. TOP - The original fabric for the top was in poor shape, so I removed all of it, and now it is just the bare frame. The frame is in great shape, but the top of the header piece that sits on top of the windshield has rust and a crack and will need to be repaired (see pictures). Someone in the past skimmed that header piece with body filler, and it probably looks worse than it really is. One latch is broken and will need to be replaced. I would replace them both, as they are pitted anyway. I bought a good used top pump and lines, but the piston rams were missing when I bought the car. I was going to put in new ones anyway. I do not have them. ENGINE - The engine is the original poly 318 V-8, with the 2-barrel Stromberg carburetor. The carb needs a rebuild, but the car starts and runs by running a hose from a can to the carb. The tank still has 12 year old gas in it, and will need to be cleaned out. It won't need to be replaced. The engine sounds good and smooth ...no knocks or funny noises. Transmission goes in and out of gears ok. No leaks, but then again, it just sits. The number on the radiator indicates that it came out of a '64 B-body, so it probably has been swapped out some time in the past. SUMMARY - It's not a show car by any stretch of the imagination, but you will be hard pressed to find one as honest as this one! Check out the other rust buckets here on eBay, and then come back and look at this ad again! It can be easily put back to original, or is a perfect candidate for a 'restomod' car. Almost everything that this car needs to be put back to original is available as reproduction parts. Guys like Joe Suchy and Kramer specialize in '62-'65 parts for these cars. I did a ton of research when I first got the car, and have a good idea of what is out there. Also, the Mopar Nationals in Columbus, Ohio is coming up soon, and that's like shopping the candy store! There were only 5,221 Fury convertibles built in '63, and 3,836 Sport Fury convertibles. This is a car that you can finish "your way" and not feel guilty about changing anything that is stock. If you want some specific pictures, I can add them to the auction ad, or send them to your email address. I am more than happy to give my telephone number to anyone who wants to ask questions or talk about the car. No warranty is expressed or implied, and car is sold "as is - where is". If you can, I urge you or a representative to actually come see the car (by appointment) so you can see that the car is actually what I say it is. My feedback speaks for itself. PAYMENT - A $300.00 deposit to my PayPal account is required within 24 hours of auction close. The balance is to be paid within 30 days via cash, personal check or bank transfer.
