Vehicle Detail

Nice driving 1975 TR6 with new tires all around, redone cooling system (hoses and thermostat). Somewhat rare Russet Brown (Code 93/semi-metallic) which appeared in the last two years of the model only. Strong engine and a perfect 4-speed gearbox (no overdrive). Great exhaust and fuel system with dual Strombergs. New brake master cylinder. Does not burn oil. Purchased car in 2003 while restoring an older BMW 2002. Interesting bit of history to this TR6 – the car appeared in the 1999 movie “Forces of Nature” in a short scene with actor Steve Zahn as the driver. I drove the car on weekends in the past several years as a fun convertible and kept it garaged. I inherited the car with a completely disintegrated windshield rubber gasket and subsequent years of water damage to the wooden dash and the driver’s floor pan. I never replaced it because it was garage kept. I did buy a walnut dash that had a crack in the middle (from shipping), which would fit nicely with some repair. I happily jumped in the car to go for a Sunday drive last year, and no start. Been trying to diagnose the Lucas gremlin ever since. I have spent way too many hours trying to hunt down the ignition short. I think I am close, but my time is money. I need to find a home for this car. I have to finish the restoration and painting of another classic that I have been delaying, and therefore must get this beast out of my garage. I do not want to leave the car sitting out in the elements. There is rust in driver’s floor pan, driver’s rocker, and rear quarter – all may need to be replaced. Ignition short. Sometimes spark and sometimes no spark at plugs. There is 12 volts to coil and electronic ignition and thus most likely a ballast resistor wire (only on 1975-76 models). Most likely incompatibility between ballast resistor wire, new Lucas sport coil and/or electronic ignition (Q. why do the Brits drink warm beer? A. Refrigerators have Lucas wiring). Needs driver’s seat. Top has shrunk and needs to be replaced. Needs new shocks and suspension bushings all around. Bottom line - it will turn over, but will not fire and start.
