This is just a Nice Car. VERY SWEET (Remember, The world record is 2,600,000 miles held by a Volvo! ) No Reserve! Call to Buy Early! Failing that…Sold to High Bidder Questions- 410-562 8317 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You are bidding on a classic 240 Volvo Sedan. A really nice car and a handful of significant upgrades in recent years that make the car even more desirable. Several very good points, few minor issues, overall a nice car. And of course rare 5 speed. Nice looking. Nice driving. It was owned and maintained by a married couple from an affluent area in suburban Maryland just outside Wash DC . -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Came in here in nice cosmetic and mechanical condition. Here’s my brutally honest and detailed report. (Sometimes I think I should have been a reporter!) Well kept for a classic older Volvo , and very comfortable. Not perfect but still we thought a nice car if Volvo safety , durability and classic common sense engineering is your thing. Engine- Came in clean. No smoke leaks, noise… nothing. The engine is Volvo’s ultra high quality and dependable 2.3 liter 4 cylinder…really the engine standout that Volvo really burnished their reputation on. Super strong, super dependable, easy to work on, just a legendary, trouble free power plant . This one's in good shape. Engine oil shows clean and clear oil . Engine is strong, and smooth. Not even a smidgeon of “blow by”. Timing belt was redone just 17K miles ago per the sticker on the engine as seen in the picture . Maintenance notes indicate timing belt also replaced a second time - even earlier. History also indicates clutch also replaced earlier . Under the engine , bottom is absolutely dry as a bone. No leaks whatsoever. Still has the hard plastic under engine splash bonnet intact. Nice. Brakes are real good . Fine . Tires – Tires are a matching set of expensive Michelin tires in good- excellent condition. $500 to $600 in tires put on about 2 years ago. Strong tread ; a solid B+ to A-. Really nice set of near new looking Volvo factory wheel covers. Again, nice. Cold Air conditioning – Air blows cold . Also the good news based on records – the freon refrigerant…. retro-fitted to the newer environmentally friendly and cheaper R-134A. Radio is strong, very decent original equipment. Good Volvo radio sound . Speakers are clear and strong, one of the nicer original equipment Volvo radios I’ve seen. (they often pretty much suck) You’ll will notice the steering is straight. Take your hands off the steering wheel on the interstate for a while and it will track , very well. Smooth at highway speed. No shake rattle and roll . Heat is strong. Fan blower motor is quiet on the dash and smooth on the dash and unlike some other Volvos fans, this one is quiet. Interior- Overall affect is real nice. Carpets are excellent. Upholstery is a solid B+ to A-, tiny bit of fade, overall very nice. Overall incredibly clean. Expensive original equipment mud guard floor mats. Perfect map door map pocket on the driver door (the proverbial Volvo 240 mark of quality by Volvo insiders!) as seen in the picture. Passenger side map is also intact (though it has a bonded epoxy-like repair. You who know Volvos and map pockets …You know the owner had to be just so carful to drive this far and have any intact door map pocket ! Exhaust – New looking exhaust, uffler and tailpipe and solid full length exhaust in good shape. Also about $500. One point of complaint – there is a very tiny exhaust leak up somewhere towards the front. Sounds like a small manifold gasket leak or down pipe leak- not sure . Not super objectionable really, but noticeable. Just a little pft, pft, pft . Power windows, locks and mirrors. Also heated seats .The heated seat c -use indicator buttons light up and appear to indicate functioning heated seats. However, I couldn’t 100% confirm their functionality because it was so darn hot here the day we tested them. Just assume non working and hopefully pleasantly surprised. One rock chip on windshield. Honestly – the great used cars: What you look for in a used car is the mentality and the energy of the owner. Over the years, it’s the owners mind and personality that make the car what it is. When the owner is careful , disciplined, attentive to detail and very responsible…and owns a car for many years …you get a used car that actually reflects that personality. That’s what you want. This is largely that kind of car. All lights and lenses are also fine . One tiny 2” hair line crack on a taillight lens. Front lights, both headlights and marker lights clear and bright. Also, nice point - "Volvo-wise" the normally cracking and splitting 240 Volvo dash board is in good shape . Does have couple cracks but nothing major. Transmission shifts fine- Clutch is fine , and shifts easily, though if I was really critical or really trying to nitpick, I might peg it as just a hint towards the soft side. (just a hint..its fine. I’m just brutally detailed in my analysis as you can see) Clutch was in fact replaced once according to paperwork. Fine. Spare in trunk. All lights correct . Replacement headlights in front to keep fresh and clear. Glass all intact . Headlights and marker lights have been upgraded or replaced with newer better version I've driven it maybe 150 miles already. Just a dependable, simple, smooth classic that should last a several hundred thousand more miles because it what it is. The body isn’t flawless but its very good. One tiny quarter-size ding , several other scratches, otherwise remarkably straight. No rust visible on the body . What looks like one tiny isolated localized rust bubble repair on a rocker near a wheel . Other than that I can’t see anything . Underneath also , no rust. Looks like the ziebart type seal. Paint shines well and the car looks generally looks very fresh. Only complaint is touch spots where, looking critically I can see evidence of paint flaws and touch dabs here and there. Not something most people would object to but worth mentioning. Even without waxing though , the car came in as bright, and fresh. Looks pretty darn good and the impression is pretty good looking. Normal wear and smattering of scratches here and there. One place on trunk, where paints a bit faded or thin. DID YOU KNOW? --- A stick shift vehicle, ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS lasts much longer than an automatic transmission car? Are you aware of that ? There’s no debate about it. Absolutely true. A manual shift vehicle just lasts longer. Much longer. Know why? In a manual shift car, there’s considerably less wear and tear on the engine. In fact, MUCH less wear. The engine doesn’t have to push all that huge mass of interlocking gears, bands, valves etc up and down the shift cycle all the time. Thus, ...the vehicle (the engine ) lasts much longer. Much longer. Over the years we’ve sold cars, we see 1000’s of wholesale used trucks and cars. The stick shift vehicles ALWAYS outlast the automatics. Interesting, huh? And....Better gas mileage with a 5 speed too. And what’s more …less expensive to fix if by chance you do ever have a problem. Safety, weight and strength in a crash – Hey what can one say. It’s a sturdy, heavy solidly built Volvo. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hey, [smile] as being a classic VOLVO, one might say with only 167 K this is still a low mileage car! Safety for you – A few years back, when Volvo advertised an "Accidental Loss of Life" insurance policy for all '96 models, they had solid empirical data upon which to make their offer . Amazingly , Volvo will tell you that no driver deaths occurred in single-vehicle crashes or rollovers of the Volvo 240 car during the 1990-94 period. Not one . Amazing safely record. Volvo made its reputation for safety and dependability with these cars. You will notice there are still a lot of them around for a reason. They are extremely strong, safe cars. To Purchase it Now- If you want the Sell it Now …. In the interest of selling it quickly I’ve reduced it for the eBay sale. [It has been for sale locally, financeable, .......for $5,695 and it’s still here. It needs to go. ] Now, its no longer financeable and we will just let it go for cash. So, the Sell it Now for the eBay sale has been reset to just $2,988. ……….just to sell it. That’s a somewhat lower price than we expect , but in a sense, it’s offering an early bird discount if someone takes it mid-auction, before the auction is over. You never now with eBay. but it might well possible go significantly over $2,988 if someone doesn’t take it mid week. Ebay - you never know. Look around on eBay, check the landscape for similar Volvos in the 91 and 92 and 93 240’s with nice Michelins, cold air, nice body and paint clean, stick shift, new timing belt , retro-fitted R 134 A . We’re selling it at legeitamate discount now. I saw one the other week, few less miles, but asking $7500. Ouch! By that measure, this is a strong buy. Again, please call me with any question or concern. I will help you if I possibly can. Jim , 410-562-8317. Barring that, and in any event, if you don’t take it for $2,988, it will be sold, NO RESERVE to the highest bidder. So, I hope that’s clear enough, unless someone comes or calls or arranges to buys it middle of the auction, …then without that , High Bid gets it. (Sometimes the bidding goes over and above our Sell it Now price , if it’s not bought early, so don’t hesitate if you want it.) Hope I haven’t overstated the case here . Maybe I get too excited about these cars , given the circumstances, … perhaps I should be a bit more restrained in hyping it …so OK . Don't expect perfection . After all it’s not a shrink wrapped, time capsule, off the shelf cream puff. Still, I will say , it’s a nice, durable, safe economical car with tons of life left in it. Not classic mint, but a classic in its own way nevertheless and ..and I’m a bit of a "fan". Anyway… Please feel free to call me if you have any questions at all. I can easily be reached at 410-562-8317. I can answer e-mail but you’ll get much more comprehensive information and more quickly if you call. You can fly into BWI (Baltimore) (cheap flights) and drive this Volvo anywhere in the country. Or call for a quote on shipping. Thanks for your interest. Thanks for reading and good luck bidding.
