Vehicle Detail
I am selling my 1966 Austin Healey Sprite. The car was fine for me and my dog, but it is not practical now that I am married and have a baby. I also need the garage space for other stuff... I have owned it for the past 12 years, and it has been surprisingly reliable – it only stranded me once and that was when the transmission got stuck in first gear. I have since had the transmission and engine rebuilt. Most of the work was done about eight years ago by Mark Baker of Sport and Specialty. The engine was totally rebuilt except the valve seats were not replaced for unleaded gasoline. I figured I could do this easily enough in the future if needed. I have not had any issue running with high octane unleaded gasoline. The transmission was completely rebuilt, and a physical stop was added to stop the gear shift from shifting too far into first gear. The engine is a positive ground. The car does not have a radio, and I never missed one – so I never bothered to change this. The wheels and tires are in good shape. I replaced a mixture of wire and rostyle wheels with the minilite/minitator rims. The previous owner did some “racing” type of modifications, such as the Weber carburetor, streamlined exhaust manifold, Mallory distributor. If I retained the car and continued to work on it, I would do the following things: Try to limit the oil leaks by changing the tappet covers or getting ones made that are thicker metal. I would consider reinstalling the SU carbs – I think the Weber is too big for this engine. The clutch slave cylinder is leaking oil too, so I would replace or refurbish it. Overall the car is in good shape, there are a few chips in the paint and a couple of paint bubbles on the rear passenger fender and at the hood. Other than that the body is solid. The windshield has a crack. It will not win any awards, but I did not buy it and work on it to be a trailer queen; I bought it to drive. I still drive it routinely, but not as much as I want and not much this summer with all of the rain we have had. Though not pictured, I do have the top for the car. It is three pieces - two metal frame members and the vinyl top. It is in good shape, but is difficult to stretch into place. Also, the top created blind spots, so I did not normally drive with it. Plus the car is a convertible - it's meant to be driven with the top down. I also purchased a tonneau cover, but never installed it - it will need the snaps. Please ask if you have any questions. I can video chat (FaceTime, Skype, Yahoo) if you want to see more of the car. Higher resolution photos are available on Flikr -search for people - my username is goodboyparker. On Jul-06-13 at 20:13:13 PDT, seller added the following information: Updated July 6.... Some have asked about the condition of the floorboards, so I have added photos to Flickr. I am not sure this needs to be stated but the Lucas electrical systems has its quirks. The dash lights work but the switch is finicky. The high beams work but sometimes touching the foot pedal will turn off all the lights. The horn works but it isn't connected at the steering wheel. The generator should probably be checked for a good ground. Other than that... I encourage bidders to review the extra photos or contact me for additional information before the last few minutes of the auction. The reserve has been met so this car will be selling. Thanks - Mike.
