An ultra mini two seat car, the interior's surprisingly spacious for a car only 8.8 feet long and slightly over 5 feet wide, with luggage space for lots of groceries-- or your golf clubs. It's loaded with safety features, rates similar to a Mercedes C-class (it's made by Mercedes), this model has a sporty look and uses a different approach than most cars (ie doesn't rely on crumple zones!). It's engine is tiny, and horsepower is low by modern standards, but don't let the numbers fool you-- while it won't win any drag races, it's perfectly happy on urban streets or major highways. And many "smarties" get as high as 100 mpg (or as low as 3.4 L/100 km). Although only a manual transmission is offered, there is no clutch pedal; instead, input from floor-mounted shiftier or optional steering-mounted paddles is fed to a servo-operated clutch to shift the sequential automatic gearbox. This Smart Cars were only available in the USA as "GREY MARKET" imports, the vehicles were modified and tested to conform to US safety and emissions regulations.Smart Cars were imported into the USA by "The Defiance Company LLC", modified by G&K Automotive Conversion in Santa Ana, California. This were imported in Very limited quantities (@ 1500 from Europe plus some through Canada) before the 'Penske Group' got the franchise & changed them to longer, slower no Turbo) and less economical ones. Originally designed and manufactured in 1998 in a Factory Built by Mercedes in France exclusively for SWATCH Watches Design Company.
