Vehicle Detail
Hello, this car I have had for about 8 years now. Since buying more of the GM/Saab Heritage collection last fall, I need to sell a few cars. I currently have three Blue Sonett III's and am selling this fine example. I have had Saabs my whole life and currently have about 60 vintage Saabs of all shapes and sizes. Just in my Sonett collection (none of these are for sale) I have one of six 1956 Sonett 1 Super Sports made, also a Red 1967 Sonett II two stroke (one of 258 cars made) with only 00470 actual miles. (I do have a 1967 Sonett II two stroke (also one of 258 cars made) that needs total restore that IS for for sale BTW). Also in my collection I have a blue 1970 Sonett III from the GM/Saab Heritage Collection that was restored by GM/CAS. It is one of 350 cars made. Lastly I have the lowest mileage Sonett III in the world, a yellow 1974 with on 00044 miles! So I do know a little bit about Saabs and Sonetts, This car was originally sold new in California and I bought it from the original owner who had since moved to Western Texas. (never seen salt) The only rust it had was a small area in the battery box area from acid. I fixed that with new metal. At the same time we sanded the underside of the car down to bare metal as best we could and applied 2 coating of POR15 to the entire pan area. (Flash on the camera makes it look brown but it is black) I also pulled the motor and went through the transmission. (I own Fort Dodge Transmission too) I also checked out the clutch and other components on the engine and in the engine bay and replaced anything I saw that needed attention. We set the valve clearance and timing. I did everything I could think of as I was planning on keeping this car in my collection. The brakes are good and appear to have been worked on prior to my buying it. The overall mechanical condition of this car is very good. It drives out very well and has good power for a V4 Sonett. It has the original style single barrel carb yet. It runs as well as any V4 Stock Sonett I have driven. Transmission works perfect and freewheeling is still active (I love that feature) Body wise the car has been repainted. It is very good condition but is an older repaint. It is not show quality but above average for a driver. They did paint the center of the hood blue where it should be black. Each his own I guess. Easy fix if you don't like. There are some spots where the fiber glass has a couple very small holes in it. I will try to put pictures up with coins next to for size. I am guessing they did this on the repaint. Not sure. It looks very nice overall and get lots of comments. The interior is all original and in good shape for it's age. It does have "Patina" and some fading. The seats are good shape. I do have another set of seats that have been redone to match my 00044 mile Sonett (best redone seats I have seen other than the GM/CAS Sonett (just as good as) that I have $500 in getting redone and would be willing to sale if we can make a deal on this car if you like. Headliner is up (well last time I looked) Everything works on the car but the dash lights. And if you know old cars you know that everything only works for a while, then you have to chase issues with wiggling fuses, grounds, you name it. Anyone who says "everything works 100%" on an old Saab is mostly wrong or never checked everything in my experience! Tires are good shape and rims are very nice with the original center caps. One last thing. And it will probably hurt me selling this car. Buying a used car off ebay is tough. I have bought dozens of cars off ebay and rarely (never really) gotten what I expected. How I view something can be totally different than how you do. Most people see their car as near perfect with "rose colored" glasses. This car is not perfect. NOTHING I OWN IS!! Everything has issues. The VERY BEST way to know what you are getting is to look in person....period. Pictures make everything looks average. I have seen some real duds on ebay bring big money cause you can't tell condition well enough. Some sellers are honest. But most just want your money. I bought this car to keep in my collection and had no plans to sell it. But after 60 cars....something has to go and it ain't the ones I listed above!!! I also took this car with me to the Black Hills last fall and used to enjoy the fall weather while coaching football at Black Hills State University. This is one of the nicer Sonett III I have seen for sale on ebay, but it is not perfect by any means. I paid over $5,000 for it 8 years ago and have done a lot of work to it to make it very nice. But it is a used car that is almost 40 years old car. Bid accordingly. I will be glad to assist with international buyers. As with any of my Vintage Saabs I sell, if you don't like it when you come see it, you don't own it. No deposit keeping here. 100% of your money back. My cell is 515-368-7222 feel free to call or email me with questions. Thanks for looking and Safe Saab'en! Tom Donney, Fort Dodge Iowa On Apr-15-13 at 22:03:14 PDT, seller added the following information: The miles are 38,200 give or take a few. Under the main title I put 41K as I thought that was correct. I was wrong as the photo clearly shows. Too many cars and too little brain power! On Apr-22-13 at 09:30:38 PDT, seller added the following information: Just FYI my reserve is $7,600. I Had offered it to a guy a many years ago for $8,500. The prices on vintage Saabs have gone up since then, with the close of Saab and a renewed interest in the brand. I would feel comfortable driving it most anywhere. (But as with any vintage car have some hand tools and most importantly....a cell phone...just in case :)
