Vehicle Detail
Welcome. This relisting now has underside and engine photos. VIN is 457 009 I will sell overseas (and have 3 times with success), BUT, only via the USA domestic method - money clears, I release the car. I will not use an escrow account. This is a Karmann bodied car. HISTORY This car comes with documentation from the day (7/5/1966) if rolled off the lot atDowntown Volkswagen and Porsche, Los Angeles. It still retains the card asking the original owner to come back for a complimentary oil change. I am the fifth owner, with all 4 prior owners residing in the greater Los Angeles area. Car was purchased by Jim "H" of Huntington Beach, California. With Google and research, I found and befriended Jim in 2010, now 77, to let him know his car would end up in Excellence magazine (a 27 month process). Jim owned the car for 24 years (1990). I gave him and his family the right of first refusal. He declined, but he would like to know where the car ends up. Jim was a teacher, and he sold the car to fellow educator John "C" of Yorba Linda, California. John sold the car to Steve & Kathy "F" of Pasadena and finally the car was owned by Philip "B" of Santa Barbara. I acquired the car in August of 2009. Owner's manual and original maintenance booklet are included. CONDITION This is a matching numbers car. COA is included. The only 2 things that stray from the COA today are; I replaced original steering wheel with VDM era correct/model correct wood wheel. The tires are not Good Year. Drives, shifts, steers & brakes as it should. The car retains it's (outstanding) original pans and battery box. It was repainted in 1981 to a very high standard. 32 years on, it still shows well. The door jambs were not painted, so the metal VIN tag is "as-is" when it left the factory, in other words, no masking marks of any kind. The engine has been well maintained all it's life, and had major work done in 1974. The interior was done in 1992, including square weave carpet, seats, door panels and headliner. I have receipts from Autos International. The clutch was replaced in 2008. I have put $3,700 in it since 2009, including brakes, bearings & more. I put (5) new Michelin XZXs on it on November of 2010, now with 4,500+ miles on them. All 5 wheels are correctly date stamped from 1966. I have a receipt showing they were media blasted and correctly repainted. Vasek Polak original license plate frame is NOT included in saleIt drips about a teaspoon of oil a year. CHARM The most charming thing about this car? The 47 year old California black plates. I peeled back all the expiration stickers to the first one applied in the summer of 1966. It now displays (the blue) "67" sticker as it's expiration date. The front black plate is also there. FULL DISCLOSURE When I buy a classic Porsche, I also want to know the flaws. So, this is why it is not a $50,000 (#1) car: Radio does not work Driver's seat is ripped in 2 places - they're along the seam, so you can't see them unless you press. There are 3 rust bubbles coming through the paint (all photographed) - 1 above driver's rocker panel (smaller than dime) 1 at the end of driver's roof drain gutter (smaller than dime) and along the "under hood" VIN plate. When it was repainted, the hue is just a tad darker than Irish Green (more blue than yellow). It looks good, but you can see the difference when you open the engine lid. 2 nasty scratches, one on hood, and one on driver's front quarter panel. Both touched up many years ago. Hood and front bumper have normal road rash from 70K+ miles. Gasket bead between front fenders and cowl have been painted over non-scratch dimple in passenger door, near top REASON FOR SALE I also have an incredible 1-owner 356B that I drive literally 10 times more than I drive the 912. This 912 does not get the mileage it deserves. This car would be a great "only" classic car in the garage. There is no financial need, so I have programmed ebay to refuse low-ball best offers. TO SUM UP I am a 12-year PCA member, a 356 registry, 912 registry, and Tennessee Tub member. I have a perfect feedback record on ebay. I live less than a minute from work, so shipping coordination on my end will be met with complete competence and convenience. Hagerty Insurance valuation guide has this car at $37K (strong #2). I welcome and encourage inspections. You will not be disappointed, and in 5 years I will regret this sale. Thanks for looking. I would be happy to answer any questions you might have. Email first, then I will give my cell number.
