Vehicle Detail
I am listing this for my dear friend- the car is in Oregon. I can assist with the buy as he is in his 80's now. This car is special. The body is all aluminum gas welded. It has a modern large capacity aluminum fuel vessel in it for street use and has been converted with lights tucked in side the front cowl and is street legal and plated. A 5 point harness was added as well as modern gauges and a new panel. I have the old Jewel and Western amp meters and volt meters if you want as well. Wiring is new. It has the 32 spoke wheels and juice brakes on all 4 and stops good. Tires are NOS from the 30's and did well over 100mph. They spin a bit on the street as they have a a lot of horsepower to weight to handle- mostly going around turns if you get on the throttle at all.. don't need the clutch to light the tires up- thats for sure. Now to the nitty gritty. THE MOTOR- a verified CLAY SMITH hand built motor (59AB) built by Clay in 46 I believe (have this all written down somewhere) for a HydroPlane boat they were racing. It has hand made steel billet rod caps (by Clay) and ported heads by Clay as well as cam shaft ground by Clay made for the 3 carbs. The motor came from Rich Bickle Sr (Nascar) who found the motor in the original Hydro in the 70's- they were still racing it! I have taken this motor in the car over 100mph in El Mirage and it has a lot more in it (although I didn't want to go faster as conditions were very poor). Its mated to the correct 3sp Ford trans and then to a gear reduction for top end... a short drive shaft to the pumpkin. The car is super light and flies. The power throws you deep into the seat and pulls and pulls- I don't know where red line is as the motor seems to keep pulling harder and harder (keep in mind Hydros are built to wind up really high and keep going at that pace). Clay Smith was a master- no doubt in my mind after driving this. Here is a video ... apparently Ebay wont allow me to guide you to a video so I have separated with blanks.. you will have to cut and paste it and take the blank spaces out and substitute the "dot" for a real "." - thanks Ebay! w w w dot youtube dot com /watch?v=MjQBCksDtp0 You can also google " clay smith indy car you tube " and it will come up. the video is old and my friend who was in his 70's was filming.. some good pertinent info from back when I knew it by heart. The car has 2 4 foot mufflers on it to quiet it down for street. Without the mufflers, the car is incredibly load and like being at the drag strip, so the police will find you in about 3 minutes. However, the sound with the mufflers off is soooooooo nice with that big loppy cam! Interested parties feel free to ask questions. On Nov-23-12 at 14:22:50 PST, seller added the following information: Forgot to mention- before the car went to Oregon a couple years ago, Limeworks in Whittier, CA went through the car from stem to stearn to insure everything was up to snuff to the tune of about $1000. They are a good shop w/ great reputation and knowledgeable guys. On Nov-27-12 at 21:29:47 PST, seller added the following information: To answer a few questions- the car is titled and runs a Mitchel overdrive in it now which allows great top end speed and makes it also very streetable around town giving it 6 effective gears in an enclosed torque tube construction. Also the nose shot shows the rear track (width between tires) as narrow in back and wide up front- this is not the case- the track is the same both front and rear. This is called camera "perspective" and "depth of field" for you camera buffs.... Thanks for all the questions. Good Luck
