Mechanical: Mechanically this truck runs like the day it rolled off the showroom floor. Starts right up and gets you anywhere you’d need to go, towing anything along the way. The legendary 12-Valve Cummins truly doesn’t show its mileage—very minimal blow-by (normal on these), no abnormal smoke out the exhaust, great oil pressure, and no knocks, pings or other abnormal noises. The Bosch P7100 Injection Pump on these engines are the best available—they are a small engine in themselves. It is a much better design than the archaic rotary design of the VE or VP44 Injection Pumps, available on the 1st gen 12-Valves and 24-Valves, respectively. This pump is governed at 215HP, the highest power available on a 12-Valve, making it desirable in that aspect. This is a NON-EGR truck. California-original 12-Valves had EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) which is detrimental to the performance and longevity of the 12-Valve engine. This Montana-original truck doesn’t have that—a very good thing to look for when buying a 12-Valve. This truck has never been tampered with or turned up in any way—anti-tamper screw is still in place on the AFC housing—meaning the fuel has never been turned up. When the fuel is turned up on these, the truck chugs black smoke and has a little more power, but it harms the life of the engine. Cummins engines are best left stock. That said, these motors make power better and cheaper than any other engine out there. This truck leaks a little oil, like any good Cummins should. The biggest reason this particular truck is so desirable is the manual transmission – the automatics go bad at 200,000 (at most!) but the manual’s last forever and are easy on clutches – this truck is on its original clutch, and it has plenty of life left. This rig is bone stock with the original air box, and exhaust with catalytic converter. Never been messed with in any way. The infamous Killer Dowel Pin played its part in this truck’s past, and took out the timing cover, which has since been repaired at the dealership, to the tune of $1500. To clarify, it HAS BEEN FIXED. This truck is also NOT a 53-Block. Basically, the 53-Blocks were a bad run of blocks from Cummins, prone to cracking. No issue here. This truck also has factory rear overload springs and an option I’ve never seen before on a 12-Valve, a rear sway bar—but it looks factory. No Gooseneck or 5th wheel hitch has ever been installed in this rig. Exterior: The body is straight with a few rock chips, see pictures. This body is definitely in above-average condition for a 12-Valve. There is a large shallow dent in the passenger rear quarter panel near the tail light (which I have mostly taken out) however there is still a crease in the body and some light scratches remaining, see pictures. There is no major body damage anywhere. ABSOLUTELY NOT A SPECK OF RUST. The original white paint is in great shape, considering many of these Dodges have peeling problems. All the exterior lights work well. This truck does have roof-mounted clearance lights, which is a rare option for the ¾ ton trucks. The bumpers are in above-average shape and the plastics are not coming off like most 12-Valves. The rear bumper has a small dent, see pictures. The bed of the truck is especially clean as far as these trucks go, and would polish out very nicely. The tailgate is from a different truck and does have two quarter-size paint peel spots, see pictures. There is also a camper shell on this truck which is in very good shape, but the clearcoat on the silver paint is peeling, however the base coat is fine. The shell has a carpeted liner inside, a dome light, attachments for a 3rd brake light, and sliding front and side windows. The truck has a rear sliding window, so a pass-through is possible. Interior: This interior is Mist Grey, and is overall in great shape. The headliner and dash (common Dodge problems) are in great shape. The only area of wear in the interior is the driver’s seat, which has a tear on the corner. I would have had it reupholstered, but I could not find an exact match for the fabric yet. This truck is as loaded as they come, only options this rig doesn’t have is leather and the automatic trans. All options function well---power windows, locks, sliding rear window, overhead console with outside temp and compass, cruise control, 6-way power driver’s seat, fog lights, etc. The truck does have a Tekonsha trailer brake controller installed, but the previous owner said they have only towed with the truck maybe three times, and that they were the ones that installed the controller. All gauges and lights work as they should. Overall this is a very nice truck for someone looking for a 4x4 5-Speed 12-Valve and is very presentable. I would not hesitate to drive this truck anywhere – I drove it down from Deer Lodge, Montana without issue. It is also rare to find the 12-Valve engine in a 1998 Ram, as they switched to the less-desirable 24-Valve mid year. Truck has a clean and clear Montana title in hand, and includes the original owner’s manual and all original keys, as well as keys for the camper shell. Also I’d like to clarify, New Venture and New Process are the manufacturers of the transmission and transfer case. They are NOT new, they are the original factory parts.
