1997 BMW 540i SPORT 6 SPEED - MECHANICS SPECIAL - LESS THAN 74,000 MILES! 1997 BMW 540i 6 Speed Sport Selling my LOW LOW mileage mechanics special. Bought in Oregon and drove to California in 2000 Has driven great & looked great over the years. Now has mechanical and cosmetic needs that I don't have time to fix. Too many other projects. Here's the scoop: EXTERIOR: Clear coat is peeling all around but is worse on the roof, trunk and bumpers. One spot of rust where clear and paint flaked off on roof top. Minor dings and scratches all around. No major dents or body repairs. Never in an accident. Front lower spoiler was broken on a tall parking stop years ago. Clear coat on two piece wheels is peeling in spots. Rear trunk emblem needs replacing. White paint splashes inside pass side wheel wells. (ran over some spilled paint) Windshield trim molding is cracked and missing in spots. All window tint is bubbling in spots. As you can see, the paint and car overall look good from a distance but needs TLC up close. INTERIOR: Minor scratches in leather & steering wheel but still in very good shape. Carpets in very good shape. Wood trim around shifter console has some cracking and fading. Wood trim door over cassette player has cracks. Change cubby on center console is missing the door. Glove box door hinge is broken. Still opens and closes as it sits. BUT...overall the interior looks great! (as-pictured) MECHANICAL: All 4 window regulators are broken and need repair or replacing. I had two of the regulators replaced years ago but now none work. Sunroof mechanism is off track and not operating. Motor works but doesn't close the door completely. Outside temperature sensor broke and was removed. Some of the dash lights are pixelated and missing in spots. Pass seat air bag light is on. The sensor needs a reset or replacement. Engine runs very strong but has a slight lifter tick sound, when revving. Currently has synthetic oil and is due for a change. Engine has an occasional hesitation at certain speeds. It is a quick stutter then it's fine. When it hesitates, the engine light comes on but goes off when the car is restarted. The car drives great except for this occasional and annoying hiccup. The engine bay is a little dirty as pictured. Would look great with some detailing. 6 speed tranny shifts great and is a BLAST to drive. Went to smog but did not pass due to engine light issue. Fault code P0100 MAF or VAF CKT malfunction. Basically need to replace the mass air flow sensor, reset and retest. All other test passed. This BMW was registered with passing smog test up to 2012. (current test results attached) Currently registered NON-OP Finally, Steering wheel occasionally screeches when turning hard left. Sounds like a lubrication issue. Steers great, no shimmy or shake. Tires are in good shape, grip well and have a lot of tread left: Federal 245/40R17 92V. Please check out the super-sized pics for all the cosmetic details.
