1966 Chevy Custom Suburban Carryall Trades: Gassers, Leadsleds, Rat Rods, Chevy Wagons and Harley's, Panhead, Shovelhead, FL Models here is my email for photos on your trades: greenjeans3@cox.net Its history began in the '30s, when there was serious demand for a truck-based wagon. While car-based wagons already existed, truck versions were mainly for professional use. So Chevy popped an all-steel wagon body onto a commercial chassis, and the Suburban Carryall. A sleeker body, a low-profile grille and "jet pods" over this grille marked the 1960’s Body Style Suburban. Contained in the pods were the front turn signals. Better outward visibility came by way of increased glass area and slimmer roof pillars. The former reverse-slanted A-pillars and wrap-around windshield gave way to a sleeker design for 1964, and the cab gained a revamped dashboard and a new instrument cluster. It is interesting that Chevrolet introduced a truck to carry nine adults and some cargo in 1935, but what seems remarkable is they decided to call this vehicle the Suburban Carryall. It was the first all-steel station wagon ever built, and while the military, forest service, and other government agencies bought them, they were also found to be useful as estate wagons and airport vehicles. Here are the production numbers that I found: Suburban (doors) C-10, sold for $2,660.00, 4,685 were built (gates) C-10, sold for $2,665.00, 4,834 were built *note sure of the number, found on the inter-net. Fifty years later, the SUV craze has swept suburbia by storm and began with families who wanted a larger vehicle for vacations and sports activities; and the Suburban was leading the way. While SUV production is a mainstay for automakers today, these Suburbans becoming a fairly rare vehicle today. Suspension & Brakes Offering more ride comfort and better control was a coil spring front suspension and rear. We removed the old springs and installed DJM Suspension Kit, 2? coils to the Calmax control arms and we got a 5? front drop that was aligned to factory specs and rides pretty darn good. In the rear it’s that 4? drop spring combined with a very adjustable block that fits nicely between the the trailing arm and the axle allowing you to drop the rear more by 1/8 of an inch increments, sweet! I also used the DJM quick action shock on all four corners. We have power disc brakes in front and drum brakes in the rear. Disc brakes up front makes stopping at highway speed safe and easy. Wheels & Tires Coker Tires brand new, installed on American Racing reverse baby moons. Steel wheels that measure 15x8 up front and 15x10 back. Engine Stock 292 c.i. version with 165 ponies. With a few add on’s: 2 one barrel carbs, Fenton Exhaust into Smitty duals all the way back, Electronic Ignition, updated A/C Compressor R-134 A Freon. Under the dash unit. New sealed battery, re-gasket the engine, carb, linkage, polished valve for a 292, hard to find! All new hoses, re-cored radiator. Body (rust free) After some searching, we came across the 1966 Suburban you see here in Tucson AZ, approx. hour and half from Mesa, AZ. The gentlemen I got it from used it for a upholstery repair business for about 30 years. It has been painted one time in it life. The paint is a little faded on the hood but the sides are nice and shiny still. This suburban was order with three bench seats but the old guy I got from removed it years ago and we have not found another one. We wanted a truly versatile vehicle as it fills the needs as a hot rod and a family hauler. Kids are in college now, do I need to say anything else? No body damage or rust. There is a small area where the paint was chip from the door hitting the front tender, big wind storm blew the door open to far..... The truck takes on hot rod status with surprisingly with no body modifications, the truck is just the way it left the factory with optional chrome grille and bumpers. Interior The front seat and middle seat are original frame work, we updated the springs and padding for comfort, I chose a very nice leather to be placed as a border around the new cloth upholstery is both stylish and durable. The tan paint on the remainder of the dash, gauge cluster and steering wheel are all factory original, proving some things just don’t need fixing. We added a tilt column to the suburban, keeping the stock steering wheel. The stock gauge cluster is still in service, and everything is work correctly. The interior of the metal doors have been painted the same color has the outside of the truck. The drivers door has some paint worn off of it, from the old guy pulling his arm on the armrest. It has a patina about it so I have left it alone. Here are a few cool items, both door latch handles were removed and two replica revolver were installed, the pistol acts just like the old door handle. Just pull up on the barrel of the pistol to open the door. The stock shifter rod is now inserted into a 12 gauge single shot shotgun, the barrel was milled down to shorten the gun up. It will still break open, but it will not accept a shell. Send my your email address and I can send you more photos. Trade-ins and/or trades: Gassers, Leadsleds, and Harley, Shovelhead, FL Models
