Vehicle Detail

Spectacular 1973 Opel GT One of the finest mildly-customized Opel GTs in the world, this one-of-a-kind car preserves the classic original shape – no wings, no side panels – but adds bold color, a great engine and many other professional-quality improvements. Motor is a custom built Bob Legere (“C&R Small Cars”) 2.0 Liter (2000cc), with a brand new custom-jetted Weber 38DGES carb, end-to-end 2-inch exhaust with the proper (and polished) exhaust manifold and Simen’s muffler system. Bob Legere is the premiere builder of Opel motors, and to have this motor built and installed today would cost well over $4000… Transmission is the rare Getrag 5-speed. Current conversion cost is well over $3000 for the transmission, clutch and installation. To say the least, this car SCREAMS and is very streetable with more than enough horsepower and response for any situation! Car has many professionally installed and executed custom accessories: · Power windows · Power rear vent windows (the only ones in existence, as far as I know) · Power Mirrors · A MONSTER sound system (see below) · Several other goodies (see below) Over $30,000 invested when project was complete in 1999. It would be even more now, of course. Many pictures on Flickr (“1973 Opel GT”) but ebay won’t let me include the link here. If you add the following string to their url (www. flickr. com) , it should take you to the set. If you are not comfortable with all that, just e-mail me and I will send you the link. (Note: many of the "see pictures" comments below refer to the flickr photos... not all details are shown here on ebay!) /photos/63452499@N06/sets/72157627709752318/ Appraised for $18,900 with a replacement value of over $35,000. I’ll take a chance and start the bidding much lower… This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime Opel GT! By the way, if this car looks familiar, it actually SOLD last year, but the buyer reneged. I have not driven it in the year since then, so that’s all the more reason to sell it now. More facts about this GT: · Multiple show winner (see pictures of plaques) · Lowered suspension using Bob Legere shackle design – safe, sturdy, and a huge improvement over the stock Opel GT look! · Beautiful, virtually showroom condition interior with custom wood console inserts to match the shifter (see photos) · All carpeting replaced with the high-grade Opel GT Source kit · Almost every fastener on this car (except for the ones calling for hardened fasteners or unavailable oddball ones, of course!) has been replaced with brand new stainless steel versions · Custom third brake light installed above rear windshield for safety · No body rust whatsoever – PERIOD! (Although there is a minor scrape on the belly pan which has some very light surface rust… see pictures) · Clear title, current registration, and just inspected (August 2011) · Garaged and pampered since 1995 · The odometer says 73,950 miles, but that is absolutely meaningless as the car was completely disassembled, sandblasted, painted and reassembled, with different interior, engine and transmission installed between 1995 and 1999. I’ve put on far less than 2000 miles since then. Bodywork: · This car was taken down to bare metal (see pictures) and completely repainted, inside and out, including the entire engine bay, by an outstanding paint shop in Seattle. The process took over four months! · Only the best Sikkens paint (F6 on page 146 - an eye-catching plum pearl) was used and the paint job is always the first thing praised by viewers at car shows. As an added benefit, it was described to me by two different paint shop owners who repaired a couple of small scratches over the years, as a VERY easy color to work with. The paint color they used is called “Electric Bicycle”, and matches perfectly. · The paint job is flawless on the entire car, except for three small dings on the right front fender, within about two feet of each other. Otherwise the paint is PERFECT… · The paint job alone would be as much as $8000 today (so I’m told) Exterior: · Headlights roll and engage perfectly and are adjusted to fit precisely in both up and down positions · ORIGINAL (in NOS condition) “Opel Blitz” hood emblem in perfect condition · ORIGINAL (in NOS condition) lenses all the way around - NOS Hella – not reproductions! · ORIGINAL (in NOS condition) Gas cap · Rare aluminum rear window louver installed and in perfect condition · Bumpers have all been re-chromed and are perfect · Accelerator linkage and hood latch bar chromed and perfect · Chrome is perfect on door handles AND the catch/latch mechanisms are chromed and perfect · ALL NEW Hood rubber (bumpers and gaskets), front/rear windshield gaskets and chrome strips, vinyl door molding & bumper rubbers · Modern electric radio antenna with power antenna that automatically extends/retracts when radio turned on/off · Courtesy lights added on both doors to alert oncoming traffic to emerging passengers · Piston-lift hood · Hood mounted engine bay light · Power mirrors added for better visibility and control · Brilliant 15-inch chrome Neeper wheels · Top-shelf Pirelli tires (205/50/15) · Hide-away charger wiring for external connection to battery-tender (charger included with car) · Koni shocks all around · Rear sway bar - Opel GT Source · Electric Fuel Pump · Petcock professionally installed in radiator for no-mess draining. · Original air filter housing seamlessly retrofitted to attach to Weber. Interior: · Original Dashboard is perfect: Crack-free and like-new (see pictures) · Original Visors are perfect and in like-new condition · Top-end (for 1997) stereo system – barely used, sounds FANTASTIC: - Alpine CD Player/AM/FM w/removable face plate (& carrying case) - Two Altec-Lansing 6x9 rear speakers - Two Altec-Lansing 6” door speakers - Two 10” Electro-Voice (EV) Force Ten subwoofer speakers (under the luggage deck “back seat”) - Two independent amplifiers mounted under tire deck. - The CD player is securely mounted on a custom-made frame, attached behind the dashboard; much greater stability and won’t make the plastic instrument panel sag or break by supporting it. As well, the instrument panel can be removed while the CD player stays in place. - Under-dash switch turns on stereo even when the key is off. · ”Dynamat” sound reduction sheeting very thoroughly installed throughout the interior to GREATLY reduce road noise (along with new carpet padding) · Modern, 3-point seat belts installed · All switches and gauges are perfect, with crisp white lettering · Custom wood console trim inserts to match beautiful wooden shifter handle · Custom digital clock installed in place of failed analog one (it does reset by itself & I can’t figure out why L) · Original trouble-prone plastic heater control replaced with metal Opel GT Source replacement and works perfectly · Heater control valve switch in engine compartment replaced and like new · Shifter boot replaced with high-quality Opel GT Source replacement · White Headliner in perfect, like-new condition · Customer Overhead Control Panel controls: · Electric side mirrors · Intermittent windshield wipers (with on/off LED) · Electric rear “pop out” windows · Electric Windshield Washer · Plus interior overhead lights · Door panels, inner handles and armrests are perfect (round plugs added as part of electric window conversion) · Upgraded steering wheel with original Opel GT Horn Pad retrofitted for normal horn operation. · Louder upgraded (Cadillac!) horns so you will be noticed… no squeaky honk here! · Floormats replaced with top-quality ones from Opel GT Source · Added discreet but helpful under-dash foot well courtesy lights · Upgraded jack and spare; original spare hold down bracket setup Mechanical: · Die-Hard Platinum battery (about two years old) is in custom-welded tray, centered, to greatly improve steering and handling. Battery has shut-off terminal installed · Brakes have new pads and hardware and work smoothly · Polished aluminum valve cover, cap, intake manifold and water inlet · Petcock professionally installed in radiator for no-mess draining · Brand-new (just replaced) Weber 38/38 DGES carb (electric choke) · Modified carburetor intake to retain stock air filter setup · Muffler replaced with high-end, hi-flow system – the sound is great! · Twin chrome muffler tips · Original charcoal canister – with charcoal! – in place and functional · All gas tank plastic vent lines replaced · Relay installed to protect ignition switch from burnout · Wiring to the headlights replaced with high-grade marine wires · Distributor points replaced with Pertronix electronic ignition Flaws: · While both seats are mechanically perfect, the passenger seat has a couple of flaws: a split seam near the top, a tiny hole in the forward part of the seat pad and some minor sun damage to the vinyl on the back of the seat. (See pictures) · Three small rock dings on front right fender/cowl (See pictures) · Very minor scratches and surface rust on bottom of belly pan - not the slightest bit visible at ground level and the belly pan is rock solid. · There is some paint bubbling under the belly pan on one side, near the back. Definitely NOT visible unless the car is on a lift. Some brake fluid spilled, which ran over the edge of the belly pan and then underneath. It should be easy enough to fix if/when you get the other small paint issues addressed, but this is not shown in the pictures (it happened in January 2012). · Tires are over 10 years old and although they have good tread and show no signs of dry rot, could have flat spots and potentially need replacing. They certainly drive fine… Included Extras: · $250 car cover (felt inside, canvas outside) custom tailored specifically for the Opel GT · Battery trickle charger with appropriate plug and wiring to conveniently attach to the charging pigtail concealed in the front bumper · Chrome style license plate frames Logistics: Bids from users with feedback lower than 10 are not welcome. If you have less than 10, please contact me before bidding with your complete information. I reserve the right to reject bids from bidders without sufficient and/or good feedback. A non-refundable PayPal deposit of $500 is required within 48 hours after auction close. The balance of the sales price is to be paid ONLY by certified cashier’s check, bank transfer or cash within SEVEN CALENDAR DAYS or the deposit will be forfeited – no refund! I have the title and will sign it over immediately upon receipt of proper payment. Winning bidder is responsible for all aspects and costs of transportation, though I will certainly try to help and will drive it anywhere within a 50-mile radius (i.e. roughly a triangle between Boston, MA, Worcester, MA and Providence, RI). Despite the absolutely impeccable condition of this car, I must add that it is sold “as-is” and offered with no warranty. I certainly encourage you to ask any questions and/or arrange for an inspection of the car before bidding – it’s even better than the pictures make it look, believe me.
