Overview Porsche created quite a sensation when it displayed its Boxster concept car at the Detroit Auto Show in 1993. It was a modern retro-look car harking back to the famous 550 Spyder from the 1950s. The Boxster gets its name from a combination of the classic Porsche horizontally-opposed six-cylinder boxer engine and its roadster body. Four years later the production version was introduced as Porsche's first all-new model in two decades. The production Boxster was fairly close in design to the concept.
