Vehicle Detail
Up for sale is a very unique and functional rat rod. The body is from a 1940 Dodge pickup. It is very solid and a real head turner. The frame is constructed with 2x4x3/16 steel tubing for the main structure with 2x2x1/8 for the center cross brace. The engine is a freshly overhauled Ford 302 with about 1500 miles. The overhaul consisted of new rings/bearings/seals/oil pump, line honed mains, crank turned 10 under, heads rebuilt (resurfaced, 3 angle valve grind, new valves/stems/seals), new mid range cam (w/new lifters)... The cylinders were fine, so they weren't bored, which is why I am saying it was overhauled and not rebuilt.. The engine has a factory cast iron 4 barrel intake (from mid 60s mustang or similar) with an autolite 4100 carburetor. It also has stainless steel shorty headers with 2.5" dual exhaust going to Borla Pro XS mufflers. The ignition is a megajolt/ ford EDIS... it is distributor-less and fully computer programmable. Upon first glance, seeing spark plug wires going to the firewall, one might think the engine is a SBC, but no, those wires are going to the firewall mounted coil packs. The transmission is a Ford RUG from an early 80s F150. For those who are unfamiliar with that transmission, it is basically a later generation top loader. The main differences being, a) aluminum case, and b) overdrive 4th gear (actually swapped 3rd and 4th gears, so 3rd is 1:1). The rear axle is a leaf sprung Ford 8.8" with 3.73:1 gears/ LSD. It came from an Explorer and has factory disc brakes with functional e-brake. The front axle is from a late 50s early 60s Ford F100. It has the Speedway disk brake conversion kit on it, with F150 rotors. Needless to say, this car has no problems stopping. The front suspension is a unique 4 link design where the top 2 links are the leaf springs that support the front end. The bottom links are adjustable (for caster) with Toyota pickup cam bolts. As wacky as the suspension seems, it rides and handles really nicely. The tires are basically brand new Yokohama Geolander ATs, 33x12.5x15 in the rear, and 235-75r15 in the front. A lot of thought and effort went into making this rod unique, stylistic, proportional, functional, and easy to work on. It is not your typical hacked together rat rod. It is also very comfortable to drive. The shortest person to drive it was 5'3", and the tallest/largest was 6'4" (250 lbs)... but I would say it is comfortable for someone between 5'6" and 6'1". Other Information/Features: Has clear Idaho title Highway fuel economy in the high teens Has functional horn Accurate gauges (spedo, tach, oil pressure, water temp, hour meter) Floor mounted high beam switch Hand e-brake 15.5 gallon old school keg fuel tank Aluminum radiator with high flow Taurus electric fan Sapelli hardwood bed floor New windshield/side windows Vega steering box Very balanced 49% front 51% rear weight distribution Roughly 2800 lb curb weight Entire nose piece comes off as one unit (4 bolts & a few electrical plugs) GM 1-wire alternator New clutch & brakes I have had this posted before and the most frequently asked questions were regarding licensing, registration and legality of this vehicle so I will try to address those... It has been licensed and registered in Idaho. Currently I am located in California.. And since I haven't been driving the truck, I didn't renew the registration when it ran out last October. Idaho doesn't have any penalties for lapses in registration (like California does) so that should not be an issue.. It has a clear Idaho title as a 1940 Dodge Pickup.. Licensing and registering it was smooth and easy. As far as being street legal, this truck is set up for fair weather driving since it doesn't have fenders. For lighting, it has working headlights, tail lights, brake lights, and turn signals.. Check your local laws to verity what is required.. I have driven this quite a bit in Idaho and California and have never been hassled by the police.>
