New wider and lower bodies were offered and "Airfoil" front fenders that flowed into the lines of the rear fenders were introduced on convertibles and sedanet models. The Super had new front fender trim featuring parallel chrome strips. Also featured for 1942 was a handsome new grille with a lower outline and thin vertical strips. A feature shared with other Buicks was a new interior air intake positioned near the front center grille that eliminated the old cowl-level ventilator. The number of body styles was reduced to three with the elimination of the one year only Business coupe. For many years Buick held an enviable position as a favorite of discriminating people including The Duke of Windsor, later King Edward VIII. This example, produced in the interrupted production year of 1942, shows for the first time the front fender partially extended across the front door. The 1942 model year began in September 1941. World War II started on December 7th and automobile production ceased on 2 February 1942. 5,439 cars were built. This carcost $1,465, weighs 4,150 pounds and is 217 inches overall on a 129 inch wheelbase chassis. The 'Fireball' 320 cubic-inch engine developed 165 horsepower at 3600 RPM. This was the largest and hottest passengercar engine in production anywhere in the world. Despite the hardships imposed by lack of materials and uncertain production schedules, Buick made substantial changes in its 1942 models, and the near total redesign caught virtually all other auto makers by surprise. The new Buick was an extremely modern car, with its massive chrome grill and large bumpers. After 1 January 1942, the government prohibited the use of all chrome trim, and thus all trim pieces were painted in matching colors, primarily battleship gray. Known as 'blackout models,' production of these chrome-less cars stopped on 2 February 1942 when the government ended all auto production for the duration of the war. However, Buick did not have to resort to painted bumpers because it had enough pre-restriction chromed bumpers on hand to complete its 1942 model run ***************************************************************** THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST ORIGINAL OLD BUICKS I HAVE COME ACROSS IN MANY YEARS I have owned this car for two years and gave it as a gift to my nephew for his first classic. He recently found a little 63 Ford Fairlane he fell in love with and is a bit more his erra. When I bought the car the previous owner was said to be the second owner. He and his son began restoration on the car. When I purchased the car the engine was out of the car.I had my mechanic install the engine and get the car running. Car was started using a portable gas tank so not to draw up old fuel from tank. Car ran good with no issues. Since then my nephew has bought new hoses and a few new parts for the car. ********************************** CAR COMES WITH A SLEW OF EXTRA PARTS Comes with an extra engine block, brake parts , plugs , wires, extra fender skirts, extra wheels, radio, and much much more!
