Red Exterior / Tan Interior VIN: 00000000000111240 2 Doors, , Coupe, 4 Cylinders, Manual Inventory ID: 111240 Video Vehicle Description This numbers matching, fully restored, California black plate, original mile 1960 Porsche 356B Super Coupe presents a unique investment opportunity for the well informed Porschephile or experienced car collector. Placing aside its pristine condition, this car has an unheard of FIFTY year service history. This service history has been neatly arranged by year and has been placed in a three ring binder for the new owner’s perusal. This service history supplies this car with an almost unheard of provenance and fully entitles the car to its current nom de guerre “The Ruby Red Baron!” According to correspondence from the Porsche Club of America within the service file, production of 1960 356B’s began in September 1959 and, during the production run, Porsche built 5,731 Coupes. While the exact number of 1960 356B Super Coupes was not known to the PCA, it was known that there were only 3,549 Super engines built during the 1960 model year. As revealed by the accompanying Certificate of Authenticity, the car (VIN 111240) is a Super Coupe and was originally painted “Ruby Red” with a “Fawn Leatherette” interior. This striking color scheme remains on the car to this day. The engine number was (and is) 86301 and the transmission number was (and is) 36448. Production of the car was completed on March 29, 1960. According to a 1961 registration receipt, this car was sold to Mr. Edwin V. Trost of Inglewood, California under California plate number TRB 227. For reasons unknown, on September 24, 1962, Mr. Trost sold the car to its second owner, Mr. John Schilling, Jr., for the princely sum of $3,000 (that is $22,605.53 in 2011 dollars!). At the time of its sale, the car had approximately 26,000 miles on it. In 1963, Mr. Schilling registered the car under California plate number ISH 669 and that plate (the original California black plate) remains with the car to this day. Registration receipts showing California plate number ISH 669 are included for the following years: 1963, 1965, 1966, 1967, 1968 and 1991. In 2005, Mr. Schilling registered the car under California plate number 3RIE910 and he maintained that plate number through 2011. Both plate number ISH 669 and 3RIE910, along with the accompanying registration receipts, are included in this sale and shall accompany the car. During the fifty years that Mr. Schilling owned the car, he performed every conceivable form of repair on it. The service history fully documents each and every repair undertaken and, while I cannot give you all the details, I can reveal the following significant events: On May 18, 1965, at 52,000 miles, Bob’s Auto Service (phone number Davis 7-7598), removed the car’s engine and rebuilt it with new main bearings, pistons, pins and rings at a cost of $588.44. The valves were reground and the engine was tuned and reinstalled. This was the first of two known engine rebuilds. On November 19, 1965, Bob’s Automotive of Torrance, California, rebuilt all wheel cylinders. This was the first of many refurbishments to the brake system (but more about that later). On March 13, 1967, the Buffalo Body Shop in Gardena, California, gave the car its first repaint in its original red (at a whopping $160 cost!). On August 21, 1970, Gabriel & Olsen Porsche Audi of Encino, California performed a maintenance service, repacked the front wheel bearings and replaced the car’s points. The mileage recorded on this invoice indicates that the car had a reading of “01231” on the speedometer. The invoice prior to that, dated April 21, 1970, recorded the mileage as 97,666. This seems to strongly indicate that somewhere between April and August 1970, the car passed its first 100,000 miles. On December 17, 1974, Gabriel & Olsen replaced the clutch pressure plate, disc and throw out bearing for a cost of $185.72. The car’s mileage on this date was recorded as 52,114. However, invoices prior to and surrounding this date indicate that the mileage actually 152,114 and lead me to believe that in the early 70’s the car was being used as a daily driver. On March 8, 1976, with the mileage reading 160,640, the muffler was replaced by Porsche Pit Stop in Sherman Oaks, California at a cost of $85.21. Subsequently, on June 24, 1976, with the mileage reading 162,418, the carburetors were “boiled” by Porsche Pit Stop. On May 20, 1977, the car (or portions of it) was painted by H&D Auto Body Shop in Hawthorne, California at a cost of $403.65. In August of 1979, with the mileage reading 173,235, Automotive Pit Stop, Inc. of Sherman Oaks, California, completed the car’s second engine rebuild. In the process of this rebuild, the following parts were replaced: main and rod bearings, pistons and cylinders and oil cooler. The carburetors were again boiled and the clutch and pressure plate were also replaced. The cost of the rebuild was $1,822.75 (that is $6,292.49 in 2011 dollars), and, as you will learn, this was an amazingly good rebuild! Since this rebuild, the car has been driven less than 30,000 miles. On February 17, 1984, with the mileage at 180,428, the car’s tires were replaced at American Tire Warehouse. The tires selected were Nitto 185/70R15’s and the original tire stickers with warranty card are included in the service receipts. Also included in the car’s documentation are two letters written by Mr. Schilling to the Nitto Tire Company. The first letter, dated March 29, 1984, requests the company’s opinion on the appropriate tire pressure for these tires. The second letter, dated January 15, 1985, is a complaint from Mr. Schilling that a response to his first letter has not been received. A third letter from the American tire Warehouse, dated January 22, 1985, is also included and apologizes for the tardy response while informing Mr. Schilling that the appropriate tires pressure is 21.5 pounds front and 25.5 pounds rear. On October 27, 1985, at 12:11 am, Mr. Schilling was driving the car in Torrance, California, when he was struck by Mr. James J. O’Connor who was driving a 1972 Chevy Nova (imagine the horror!!!). This accident occurred on the corner of Arlington at Post just north of a four way intersection. A complete police report is included in the documentation along with an insurance report and an invoice from H&D Auto Body Shop of Hawthorne, California showing the repair work done to the car. This accident resulted in the car (or portions of it) receiving paint for the third time. The accident appeared to be the fault of Mr. O’Connor who pulled out from a parking space as Mr. Schilling was driving by. The car’s mileage was not recorded at the time of the accident. Based on a lack of service invoices and certain correspondence between Mr. Schilling and his son (also included in the service documents), the car appears to have be either stored or used only sparing in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s. At some point in time, the car was moved by Mr. Schilling (or his son) to Fairfax, Virginia where it stayed for a number of years. There is a single invoice from this time period, dated May 10, 1996, from Burke Auto Car and Lube in Fairfax showing that the car’s gas tank was removed and replaced due to issues with rust. Several other service items are recorded on this invoice at a total cost of $1,621.50. This is the only service history break I could locate and the invoices surrounding it are dated June 6, 1988 and October 14, 1996. This break in service history (coupled with the contents of Mr. Schilling’s correspondence with his son and the rusty fuel tank), strongly supports our belief that the car was stored from 1988 tom1996. Beginning in 1996 and continuing until 2000, normal maintenance was resumed on the car by Alpina Car Center in Napa, California. On January 14, 1999, Alpina reported that the car was given a minor service and that the front wheel bearings were replaced. The mileage recorded on this date indicates that the odometer read 98,815. Given the prior service history, this must mean the actual mileage was 198,815. On November 12, 1999, Alpina reported a minor service and battery check with the mileage at 2159. This suggests that between January and November of 1999, the car passed the 200,000 mile mark. On September 3, 2000, the car was damaged in an earthquake and a claim was filed with State Farm Insurance in Suisun, California. The damage suffered resulted in paint being applied to the car for a fourth time. Subsequently, the car appears to have again been placed into long term storage. In 2011, the car was acquired by an individual (who shall remain nameless) in California who seems to focus on purchasing, restoring and retailing vintage cars. This individual painted the entire car (its fifth painting), replaced all the window gaskets, repaired certain rust issues in the undercarriage and then painted the undercarriage in a “bullet proof” epoxy primer which gives the undercarriage the distinct color which it carries to this day. Unfortunately, we were not able to document any of this work with receipts and were able to discover it only through a single email (contained in the file) and a single telephone conversation with the unnamed one. On March 7, 2011, the car was purchased by an airline pilot, John W. Baker, and moved from California to Raleigh, NC. Mr. Baker titled the car in North Carolina and operated it under NC license plate number 34095. This license plate is also included in the sale as is Mr. Baker’s North Carolina registration. At the time, Mr. Baker purchased the car the mileage was advertised as 2,425 miles. This was understood by Mr. Baker to mean 202,425 miles. Mr. Baker purchased the car as a gift to his wife and spent an appreciable amount of time, money and effort making improvements to the car. Fortunately, Mr. Baker documented all of his work and we can prove through receipts that he made the following improvements: replaced the master cylinder with a dual system, installed all new wheel cylinders and “blue hose” rubber brake lines, relocated the master cylinder reservoir to the “top” of the luggage compartment (you can actually see it!), installed new LED tail lights, rebuilt the distributor, replaced the spark plugs and all filters, installed new carburetors, repacked front wheel bearings, installed new Boge shocks, replaced transmission fluid with Swepco 201, installed an “almost correct” radio with USB and audio in jacks and placed real 356 speaker grills over new speakers. On Thursday, February 16, 2012, at 2:00 pm EST, with the mileage at approximately 205,385, we purchased the car from Mr. Baker and began a two day, 1293 mile driving trek from Raleigh, NC to Houston, Texas. This journey is documented on YouTube and may be seen on TheBavarianMotors Channel or by simply searching for “Ruby Red Baron” on YouTube. I personally drove the entire 1293 miles and can say without hesitation that the engine rebuild performed in 1979 was an amazingly good rebuild. I say this because not only was the car capable of driving at an average speed of between 70 to 80 miles per hour (with a tested redline speed of 100 mph), but that it made the trip averaging about 27 miles per gallon, used ¾ of a quart of oil on the trip and did not, I repeat, did not leak oil in my garage after the trip was over! Further, Mr. Bakers stewardship of the car resulted in not only an impecable engine and transmission, but also a magnificient set of brakes which grab quickly and precisely and do not have any negative effect on the cars steering (no quick jerks to the right!). Since purchasing the car, we have begun the process of replacing the after-market Bursch exhaust with a new factory correct exhaust from Stoddard, are installing red, racing lap belts and are in the process of refreshing the engine by repainting the engine tin and giving it a complete 3,000 mile service. Currently, this car needs nothing, is a proven long distance driver (1293 miles in 2 days!!), and a bona fide investment quality car. If you are a dedicated Porschephile or a serious car collector who is looking to invest money in a living piece of history then this is your opportunity to own one of the best 356’s on the road today. As a recap, here are the highlights: Fifty year service history!
