Vehicle Detail
I am the third owner of this fine European car. The fellow I bought it from got it almost new and owned it for over 20 years. He and his father restore BMW's and did a partial restoration on it just before I purchased it. The items they did included new tires, a new top, new brakes, a factory-spec paint job, up-graded OEM wheels, and some other small odds and ends. Since I have had it, a new water pump installed and while they were at it, I had them install a new timing belt and give it a good tune-up. If this was an American car, it would be considered "high mileage", but at under 112,000 miles, this thing is just getting broken in good. I have driven it less than 2,000 miles in the time I have owned it. My wife and I both love driving it, but we just don't take it out that much. It is ashamed to see it languishing in the garage, lonely for some attention. Here's all the good stuff: It runs great with no weird engine or transmission noises. The engine looks great cosmetically. I have had it at several car shows and just had people walk around and stare at the clean motor, wondering how I keep it that way. The suspension feels like new and the tires ARE new, so it holds a turn like it's on rails. The leather interior is in great shape for its age, with no rips, tears of major fading. The carpet and floor mats are in very good condition, as is the trunk interior. The convertible top was brand-new when I bought it two years ago. I keep it garaged for the most part, so the top is in near-new condition. The back window is not all wrinkled, yellow and cracked like most older convertibles, and the vinyl on the rear boot for the top is in very nice condition. The paint was done professionally and matches the original color exactly. It is probably better than the original factory paint. All of the exterior rubber and plastic bits are intact and in good condition, and ALL of the badges are intact, which is amazing on these cars. This car even has the complete original tool kit. I am sure there are things I have forgotten, but all-in-all it is a wonderful looking, great running little sports car. Here's all the not-so-good stuff: There are three or four very small rock chips in the paint. I have tried to show them as best I can; they average less than 1/8" each and there is no rust. The chip on the left front fender is dead-center in the picture; the other spots are reflections. The radio has never worked since I've had it. A JVC KD-X50BT in-dash stereo is a good replacement and sells new for less than $100.00. The plastic plate/holder for the convertible top release is broken; the pull still works but it's a little wonky. Several BMW parts sites have these for about $30.00. It should take someone about 10 minutes to install a new one. And finally, the "check engine" light on this car has always been a little weird. It comes on and off at will, sometimes for days at a time, then nothing for months. The car was just serviced by a certified BMW shop. They were able to get it "off" for me, but since that time it has come back on. I have no earthly idea how to fix the damn thing other than to remove the bulb...so you figure it out...all part of owning and loving a classic car. Well that's about as good as I can describe it. It's been a great little car for us, we just don't drive it that much. So take this home and drive it for another 100k miles or so, then sell it for double what you paid for it. Oh, some notes on pick-up and/or shipping. If you are local you can come by for a look...not a test drive unless I have cash in my hand however. The new owner will be responsible for ALL shipping costs, scheduling, etc. I won't check rates and I won't call shipping companies. FINALLY, I am open to possible trades or partial trades. I don't want your kids mini-bike, your old Nova, or your daddy's farm tractor. I will however talk to you about running shovelheads. I have no interest whatsoever in "projects". .
