Restored 1954 VW Beetle oval window Bought this rust free Beetle in NZ from a car collector. This Beetle was shipped new to NZ "CKD" (Completely Knocked Down) in 1954. The car was assembled in NZ using NZ materials, such as, interior materials, tires, wiring and NZ labor. This was done to avoid high import duty and taxes by VW in Germany. We completely disassembled the car, upon arrival in Charleston, SC, in 2007. Restoration was begun in May of 2008. This Beetle waas so rust free, it made the restoration so much easier, as opposed to restoring a rusted car. Everything has been restored or rebuilt, including the running gear, clutch, brakes, steering and etc. Everything is new or rebuilt Please view posted photos to see the results of the restoration. We added some very cool period accessories not usually found on restored Beetles. Check out theAussie blinds in the rear window, theAussie sun visor over the windscreen and all the chrome goodies from Dave's Bugcity. The wide white wall tires are new and have 3 miles on them as of Feb 9th, 2012. All 4 hubcaps are new original VW replacements from Dave's Bugcity in Connecticut. The split-window, that had been a prominent feature of the Beetle since the pre-war prototypes, was replaced in March 1953 by a larger oval window in the interests of safety. The oval version increased rear visibility by nearly 25 percent. It lasted until 1957, when the heavily revised "big-window" model was introduced. For "Oval" cars, the bodywork remained the same as the earlier model, as did the rear lights and registration light.
