Vehicle Detail
1989 Honda Shadow, 600 VLX Immaculate, “showroom” condition, up-to-date maintenance, (I’ve got the receipts), 600cc Honda Shadow. This is a great bike, always kept in my garage, with only 16,764 mature, adult-driven miles. – (Just so you know, I bought a new bike and need the space in my garage.) -- Be sure to do a search and check the specs on it. I bought the bike from a friend in 2011, and I wanted to “base-line” it and bring it up to factory specs. Here is what I told the motorcycle shop-owner I took it to: “I recently purchased a 1989 Honda Shadow 600 VLX -- It has 16,000 miles on it, and is VERY clean. What I’d actually like to do is bring it back to a ‘zero’ base, meaning I’d like to have enough confidence in it to drive it to… (as an example) Seattle. I’m thinking the list below is pretty thorough, but I’d also be interested in your suggestions if you think I missed anything, that you might think of.” Here’s my list: - (This cost $1200+, and I’ve ridden the bike 496 miles since the maintenance was done) - Electrical: Check head light high/low beam, tail/brake light, turn signals, instrument and driving lights. Inspect overall wiring for chafe. Use ties to secure any lose wires. Put a shot of WD-40 on all switches & locks. Check battery levels and clean terminals (the battery was replaced.) Check fuse box, provide what you think I should have for spares. - Engine Fluids: Change oil and replace with Mobil 1 synthetic oil, and Honda filter; Replace all fuel filter & screens and check lines for chafe and dry rot. Flush old antifreeze/coolant, and replace with new coolant/anti-freeze – check flow/pump/hoses. - Brakes: Check and adjust hand-lever & foot-pedal for free-play and correct travel. Check master cylinder for clean brake fluid & proper fluid levels, if in doubt, replace, (it was replaced.) Inspect front-brake pads/calipers and replace if needed, (they were replaced.) Inspect rear brake drum, replace if needed. (I don’t want to bet my life on worn or out-of-adjustment brakes) - Tires - Wheels: REPLACE tires with new Bridgestone “Spitfire 11Rs”. Check air pressure on both tires; so they’re not over-inflated for Hot conditions/climate. Inspect rims for dents, cracks and Carefully adjust/tighten loose spokes. Check axles, axle nuts & hardware for tightness & wear and re-lube the bearings. Inspect drive chain, then, clean & lube and adjust (or replace) if needed. (It was replaced.) - Engine - Transmission: Adjust valves; replace spark plugs with new factory-recommended plugs; rebuild carbs, and adjust float level(s) & idle for correct fuel/air mixture. Inspect/adjust ignition components… inspect spark plug wires; set correct timing, inspect oil lines for leaks, cracks or chafe & look for oil leaks from the engine/trans. case(s). Replace air filter with K & N filter, inspect exhaust for leaks (especially at the manifold) and check mounting brackets. - Frame - Suspension: Check/tighten/torque all nuts & bolts & engine/trans. mounting hardware. Look for hair line cracks around engine/transmission mounting brackets. Check steering head/fork assembly for looseness/tightness and adjust if needed. Lube steering-(tree) bearings. Check front forks for leaks. Replace seals if necessary; check fork fluid level (refer to owner’s manual, use only approved hydraulic fluid). Inspect rear mono-shock and check mounting brackets/hardware. Inspect handle bars for cracks, check mounts and oil all cables. I’ve got a clean, clear Nevada Title in hand, and will accept cash, check, certified funds, and will release the bike when the funds are cleared.
