Vehicle Detail
To start with, let me first say that I understand that there is a lot of information in my ad. I also understand that this may be boring to the person who is just looking and not buying. However, for the person who is looking to buy and spend their hard earned money, I feel that there is never too much information. As to myself, I am not a dealer, just a (62) year old kid that loves muscle cars. For my work, I manage a Correctional Facility here in Maine and have worked there for over (38) years. I am also a respected member of my community. I mention this only because of the value of this car and so that prospective buyers will have some idea as to who they are dealing with. Also, please check out my eBay feedback which is 100% with (800) transactions. Here is a quick history lesson for the 1968 Corvette. The all new 1968 Corvette was a dramatic change in appearance from previous Corvettes. The all new styling bore a striking resemblance to Chevrolet's Mako Shark II concept car and was a bold look. The new Corvette also introduced hidden windshield wipers and removable T-tops on Coupe models. A new three speed automatic transmission replaced the previous two-speed unit. Under the hood, the Corvette gained several interesting engine options, including the 327 cid V8 L79 rated at 350 bhp, and the L89 aluminum head option for the L71. The rare L88 engine option was still available for a whopping $1,032, and just 115 were sold. Still rated at the same 430 bhp as the regular 427 engine, the wise buyers that checked off the L88 option were treated to a host of goodies such as a bubble top hood, the 427 engine with an aluminum intake and aluminum heads with a 850 CFM dual feed Holley carb. Mandatory options included an aluminum radiator, heavy duty brakes, and the Muncie M-22 transmission. Luxury options such as Power windows, power steering, and radios were not available. Corvette production hit a new record of 28,566 units. Corvettes are not like other cars. Even amongst a line of cars known for its individuality, the 1968 Corvette stands out. A lot of the "different" can be explained away as first year jitters. Many people will not buy the first model year of a car, not wanting to take the risk that the bugs haven't been worked out. The 1968 Corvette is pointed out as justification for the theory. The first year generation "C- 3" 1968 has many one year only areas, first and lasts. A few first were: · T-tops removable roof panels; · Removable back glass for superior wind reduction; · Battery behind the seat; · Astro ventilation glass ending Corvette's vent glass design. A few lasts were: · Low back seats; · Headrests; · Dash ignitions until gen 5. A few one year only items were: · Interior door panel design; · No Stingray moniker above the fender vent; · Compartment behind the hand brake for seat belt buckles; · Outside door lock/release buttons; · 15 inch x 7 inch wheels front and rear; · Backup light was located under the bumper. Ok so here is a Corvette you can purchase that has its completely original drivetrain and it won't break the bank. Is it mint? No. Is it nice and could it be mint? Yes. Oh did I mention that this 427 Corvette has the 427 in the Vin Number? Well it does. 427900. How cool is that? There were approximately 1,588 1968 Corvettes produced in August of 1968 and this was one of the last 700 produced. The previous owner had many cars and hardly ever drove this Corvette. He sadly passed away four years ago this July and the car has been setting in dry storage since his untimely death. I simply purchased a new battery, added some octane booster and fired it up. Exterior: Approximately fifteen years ago and about 500 miles ago, this Corvette was treated to a frame off restoration. New one-off custom mixed carbon metallic exterior paint was applied at the same time. This particular color was preferred by the prior owner rather than the original color of Polar White. (I must agree.) The front chrome bumper has a little hazing and the rear chrome bumper is excellent. The glass is very good with tinted side glass with the exception of a small pea size chip in the lower passenger's side of the windshield. This in no way affects the driver's vision. The T-tops are functional and when in place, they do not leak. All weather stripping is in good to excellent condition. All four tires are in good to excellent condition. The door openers and mirror are good. The blinkers and all exterior lights are working including the hideaways. The wiper and cowl flap are working. Interior: The interior is in good condition but in no way is it mint. The vent pulls on the console are frozen in place. The driver’s side lock, chrome cover, is missing. There is a working aftermarket tach mounted on the steering column that the previous owner wanted even though the original dash tach works. Take it out if you want to. There is a working aftermarket radio/tape player with speakers added in the back. Interior lights are working. Speedometer and other gauges are working. Clock does not work. I did not remove the rear pop-out window because one of the latches is broken. The drop down holding area for the pop-out window is there and functional. Undercarriage: The undercarriage is in very good condition as can be seen in the photos. There is no rust issues of any kind. Body mounts and mechanicals were replaced during the restoration. Engine: The L36 427/390HP engine is original to the car with the vin number in place, the correct IQ code as well as the stamped date being in line with the build date of the car. The block casting number and casting date are also correct. The heads, intake, exhaust manifolds and rare transistorized distributor are all correct and I believe original to the car. The carburetor is a correct aftermarket Holley Spreadbore 650 double pumper. This carburetor was made specifically to replace the Quadrajet on a stock manifold. The rear axle with the correct stamping is also present. The original engine was completely rebuilt by one of the top machine shops in Maine at the time of the restoration. The best musclecar era mechanic in this area put the engine back together and rebuilt the transmission at the same time. The distributor shielding is in place and the car also has MSD ignition that you can remove if you want to. The car starts great, runs strong and drives down the road as it should. The engine compartment itself is in very good condition. Transmission: The transmission is original with the vin number in place. It was rebuilt when the car was restored and shifts up and down the gears with absolutely no issues. The owner wanted a higher reving torque converter during the restoration so a 3000 stall converter was installed. Here is the decode information that I have: Vin.
