Vehicle Detail
Only 3438 convertibles were produced in 1972. This is one of 364 factory 4spds made in 72. The GTO was not available as a convertible, the LeMans Sport took it's place. This car was an original 400 CID (I still have the long block) Over $10K was spent 3 years ago repowering with a 71 GTO 455 H/O, new gas tank, refurbishing the brakes and suspension. I recently replaced the original top and carpet. The rest of the interior is in excellent original condition. I've also added new MSD ignition, dual flow masters, clutch, tires, and a GTO console. The car came with factory AC, PS, PB, front disc, GT steering wheel, tach and honey comb wheels. The car was painted about 10 years ago and still looks great with the exception of a few common rust bubbles. The car runs and drives excellent. I would drive it across the country without hesitation. See 15 pictures at, http://photobucket.com/rays72LeMansSport I'm setting the reserve less than the value. Winning bidder must submit a $1000.00 deposit within 24 hours of the close of bidding. I will be glad to answer any questions. The car is for sale locally and seller reserves the right to cancel bidding if sold. You can email me at jrwaldrup@gmail.com or call 843-572-4840. I've replaced the windshiel pillary header (where the convertible top meets the header above the windshield) and the heater core. I've added dual tips to the exhaust and the 455 emblems on the rocker panels. The car still has the original AM radio. The A/C is all ther, but needs to be gone through. The tach and spedo need to be refurbished, and the vinyl needs to beed installed on the pillar header. No ratles, rides smoothe and quiet with the exception of the dual exhaust. The interior is in incredible original condiotion. No pitting on the dash chrome trim.On Feb-20-12 at 09:33:09 PST, seller added the following information: MY cell is 843-509-2492On Feb-21-12 at 05:59:17 PST, seller added the following information: This was emailed to me by a former owner...."I owned this car from March 2007-August 2009. When I sold it it had 117,210 miles. The Cardinal Red lacquer paint was done around 1990 per the gentleman I purchased it from, who was the second owner. It was not driven for several years. The gold side stripes are incorrectly painted on. This is a very rare LeMans Sport GT convertible with the 400 4 speed 3.31 Saft-T-Track rear. I had the PHS for it, but not anymore."On Feb-21-12 at 07:20:00 PST, seller added the following information: The car does have the rare GT option. This is a very rare care.On Feb-22-12 at 01:36:05 PST, seller added the following information: Thanks to being contacted by a previous owner when he saw the car listed, I was able to put toger this complete history of the car to the best of my knowledge. At the time I purchased the car, I didn't realize how rare the care was. From the 3rd owner: The original owner was a nurse that worked at Arnot Odgen hospital in Elmira, NY. She traded the car to the second owner who is a contractor for work performed on her house around 1989. He is a MoPar collector in Nelson, PA. He didn't use the car a lot, but had some work done to the exterior during his ownership. Allegedly, he still has the original window sticker, but he misplaced it. I heard about the car through a friend and purchased it in March, 2007. I owned this car from March 2007-August 2009. The GT package also included the right side mirror, GT steering wheel, and an additional charge for the 4 speed Muncie transmission and honey comb wheels. I had the PHS for it, but not anymore. I drove it and showed it on several occasions, but I really wanted a 1973 GTO 4 speed. So, I sold it to the kid who was about to be enlisted for $11k in August, 2009. I was looking for $15k, since it was a fully numbers matching 400, 4 speed Muncie, with the rare GT package in good original condition. A similar car sold for well over $20k at that time that was identical, but was silver with an ugly grey interior, but it had the T-41 GTO nose. Per the kid that bought it from me, he blew the 400 when he arrived in Ft. Bragg. It ran very well upto that point. I rebuilt the Q-Jet and replaced the fuel pump at that time. It had a majority of the original exhaust system on it when I sold it. I redid the 14" Honeycombs with new paint; NOS trim rings and center caps. I put a fresh set of BFG T/A's on it at that time since it was wearing a very old set of whitewall tires. The tach or AM radio never worked when I owned it. The speaker was the issue with the radio. The interior was superb, and has never had any items repaired or replaced. When I purchased the car: I bought it from a Marine at Ft. Bragg who was being transferred in August of 2010. The car had just over 120,000 miles with a fresh engine. He paid a friend of his who had a couple GTO’s and a 71 GTO 455 engine to go through the car and re-power it with the 455. He did not reconnect the speedometer because the hand had fallen off and was going to send it out for restoring. Over 10K was spent on the engine, breaks, suspension, etc. at that time. He was starting to realize how much money it took to get a car to this type of condition. At the time I purchased the car, it still had the original top and interior. Having a fresh engine, I trailered the car to Charleston I’ve replaced the top, boot and top well, new clutch, new correct carpet, and had the exhaust correctly installed with the correct dual tips. I did replace the windshield header and had 2 holes the size of quarters cut out of the front floor pans and replaced with new sheet metal. I also added MSD ignition. The car mainly stays in my garage and is driven very little. I would estimate around 1000 miles since I’ve owned it. Items that need to be addressed are; I have not gone through the A/C system. All the components are there. The tach and speedometer (cable and hand), the vinyl needs to be installed over the new windshield header, and the original radio is not working. (Former owner said speaker is blown.) The valves are due to be adjusted after the engine break in time. The car still drives great and runs smooth. It attracks a lot of attention, and everone wants to look at it and ask questions. It's been a great driver that I've enjoyed tinkering with for the last couple of years. I have a 66 GTO also for sale. I got re-married last summer and we want to build a new house. I have to get rid of my toys and she gets what she wants......... I don't need to sell them, I want to sell them.
