Vehicle Detail

1966 Lotus Elan S3 Twin Cam Weber LHD Up for auction is a pristine and rare example of a low mile, left hand drive S3 drop head Elan. Drop head S3 Elans do not come up for sale very often, and this is one of the nicest to hit the market and not an easy decision to sell. Absolutely excellent condition, restored, always garaged and protected from harsh weather and now in Arizona. This car very is fast with a tight suspension and amazing handling. And does it fly!, with 125hp or more and a lot of mid range torque in a 1500 pound car, the result is brilliant acceleration coupled to Lotus' reputation for precise steering, fine handling, and sure braking. Engine has been recently professionally rebuilt with twin cam head modified to Sprint specs (125hp), ported and polished, high lift cams, new twin Webers, new powder coated headers, new wiring, new top, new boot cover, new windshield.....the list continues. The clutch is new, and the original semi close ratio gearbox was also rebuilt at the same time as the engine. The tightness of the gearbox shifter is like new. Excellent strengthened Lotus chassis is essentially perfect...no rust, no damage, no dents, almost like new, same with the underbody. Fully restored body, gorgeous fire engine red paint, very nice interior restored to mostly as new original condition and new convertible top. New Minilite type alloy wheels (the best from Panasport), Conti radials, rebuilt suspension (new bushings, etc.) with fully adjustable shocks and struts, adjustable ride height springs, all new disc brakes and rotors. LOTS OF OTHER WORK, fairly new wood dash, excellent interior, New classic beckman stereo, electronic ignition, reduction gear starter motor, electric cooling fan, rebuilt radiator, new brake and clutch master cylinders, Stainless Steel brake and clutch lines, every conceivable option added for both reliability and performance. And superb steering, handling, brakes, and shifting. A tiny bit stiffer than usual with new Dave Bean 'fast road' springs and adjustable ride height spax shocks and new Rotoflex couplings, but still in a class of its own. Everything one might expect from the nicely prepared, Elan. Absolutely gorgeous when seen with excellent highly polished red paint. Add the luxury touch of power windows and the result is an impressive classic sports car that is truly a delight to drive and own. All gauges and lights work as do the power windows. Clean engine bay, close to 'spotless' underneath. SMOOTH AND POWERFUL, if you have never driven an Elan, what a rush. -- With probably around 125hp on tap, this 1550 pound car moves along with real performance. And this is probably the best single S3 Drophead I have ever seen. Doesn't miss a beat...with its powerful heater and excellent weather sealing, can be driven all year 'round. Absolutely gorgeous when seen and no disappointment when driven. Vehicle Details Engine and Major Mechanical: The original Lotus twincam with matching number head and block are in the car. It has been completely professionally rebuilt by the previous owner by a shop with lots of Lotus experience. It was dyno-tested to produce 125 HP (@ 6100 RPM) with Sprint-spec cams. The Weber 40 DCOE carburetors are new. Pertronix electronic ignition eliminates the need to have to deal with points. The headers were powder coated. The clutch is new, and the original gearbox was also rebuilt at the same time as the engine. The tightness of the gearbox shifter is like new. Body: Lotus confirms that the car was painted red at the factory on the build date of 24 June 1966. It was stripped to the gel coat and repainted by the previous owner. The paint is excellent, with excellent gloss and no signs of stress-cracks in the gel coat. This is largely due to excellent preparation, paint quality and an original mileage street car. The chrome around the window frames is very nice. The power windows are in good working order and the windshield has no cracks or scratches. The bumpers are perfect with silver metallic paint and clear coat. Interior: The interior is also excellent. The original wood dash was replaced previously and is in excellent condition. There is a period Becker stereo installed and the FM reception is great. The leather steering wheel is a classic 14 inch Nardi in excellent condition. Door panels are very good. The carpet has been replaced but looks original. Seats are also very nice with no tears and look like originals, Console and armrest pad are in excellent condition. All instruments are in proper working order, and chrome bezels are excellent. Chassis: This car has the original chassis that is totally rust free. It was stripped, sandblasted and repainted with rust resistant paint and has no signs of rust. The motor mount tabs are solid. Brakes and Hydraulics: New Stainless Steel brake caliper pistons, new rotors front and back, new flexible braided-hoses, rebuilt and new clutch master and slave cylinders with braided stainless hose. Cooling System: Rebuilt water pump, cleaned and pressure-tested radiator and heater core, new silicone radiator hoses, new heater hoses, and hot-water valve. Electrical: Converted to negative ground. New gear-drive starter. Suspension: Slightly lowered all around, this Elan sits beautifully on adjustable rear spring platforms (allows for slightly wider tires) with Koni shocks and Continental 165/70x13 tires. The tie-rods are also new and trunions have been rebuilt. The odometer shows just over 90,200 miles. The car runs and drives like a new car. Everything is tight and there are no rattles. This Lotus can be driven and enjoyed without having to do anything. But also keep in mind that it is a 40 year old car, and is being sold as-is, with any faults whether known or unknown.
