Vehicle Detail

Hello, AMC fans! Up for auction is my 1968 AMX 390 V8—1 of 2,112 built with 390 and Automatic drivetrain. The car has a very desirable and original color combination of Matador Red Exterior w/ Black interior—it's an original Go-Pak car as well AND has its original factory build sheet. I bought this ride less that two years ago, but I have to sell it now because I’ve moved out of state and don’t have a place for it. Since little time has passed, I’m putting up the description from the previous owner who knew a lot about these AMXs—I believe his family was connected to the AMC plant in Kensosha, WI. Before we get to his description, I’ll tell you my mechanic has replaced many gaskets and seals, and taken care of all minor issues, so there's nothing leaky and she drives great. A recent compression test revealed all cylinders at 175-180 pounds. The car has just been detailed inside and out, so it's looking amazing and the interior is exceptionally clean. In short, the ’68 AMX is a unique, beautiful, and powerful car. Whenever I drive it around town I get head turns and compliments. Overall, the car is in very good condition, but not so perfect that you feel guilty or nervous driving it. As you'll read in the previous owner's explanation, there are some minor imperfections to be noted--a few dings, retouched paint chips, etc--so please read on. Questions? Call 707-227-0245. Deposit of $500 within 72 hours, please. Certified check, money order, personal check or cash—whichever you prefer. Pick-up of car is expected within 7 days of auction end. Either cash at pick-up or check/money order sent 3 days prior to pick-up so the funds can clear. Best of luck bidding!* * * Power steering and four-piston front disc brakes. 3.15 rear gear with Twin-grip. Car has its original build sheet to prove all the options and combinations. While build sheets are common for Mopars, GM’s and even Marti reports are available for Fords, nothing exists for AMC’s. So build sheets are extremely rare especially for 390 AMX’s! 46,000 original miles. The car has never received a full-on restoration, but instead has been maintained well over its 40+ year life. The car is 100% stock with no alterations at all other then 14x7” rear wheels (factory are 14x6” all around) and the Go-Pak stripes are painted on instead of decals. The interior of the car is exceptionally nice. The 68 only door panels are in fantastic condition. These are not reproduced so you can’t buy replacements. The dash is in great shape with no cracks or splits. Same goes for the dash pad. Original AMX numbered plaque is there. The complete carpet set is new and has matching AMX logo mats. New sill plates also. The seat covers, foam and seat backs are brand new Legendary Interior pieces. The seat tracks were bead blasted, repainted and greased. Shifter rebuilt with new bushings so it is very tight with no rattles. The seat side covers are new placements. Every component of the entire interior has been thoroughly cleaned. New interior screw kit used during reassembly. The only items in the interior that need attention are the steering wheel and the headliner needs to be glued to the roof to stop the cardboard from sagging. The steering wheel is better then 90% of the AMX’s out there, but it should be restored so it is as nice as the rest of the interior. The original headliner ribbed vinyl fabric is solidly adhered to the board, but the board itself is sagging slightly. All the original seat belts (including shoulder belts) are in place and in great condition. They still have the original tags which is rare in itself. The car was repainted sometime in the 80’s and as far as I know it has only been repainted one time. The paint has good shine and looks nice unless you are 2 feet away. There are several chips that have been touched up and there is a small paint stain spot on the trunk lid. Overall the paint is OK for a driver or a cruise-in show car. The body of the car is nice with no rust that is visible when standing in front of it, but the lower quarters behind the rear wheels have evidence of some filler. Overall the car is very presentable and gets many compliments - trying to be as honest as possible with the paint/body description so there are no surprises for a potential buyer. The chrome on the bumpers is in very nice shape. The ¼ window chrome and driver’s mirror have some fading and spotting, but no pitting. I have replaced the following exterior trim with new parts: rocker moldings, front side marker lights, 390 emblems, NOS AM trunk emblem, front parking light lenses, new front spoiler, new center caps, new lug nuts, every piece of weatherstriping and rubber door/hood/trunk bumpers are all new. If you know AMX’s you know that the rear taillights, housings, lenses and center reflector are often pitted, broken and faded. None of that on this car. Almost everything is in great shape due to its low mileage and maintained condition. All the lights work, even the reverse lights. The engine was rebuilt in the 80’s and the car has only a few thousand miles since. I have all the receipts from the previous owner. Car has complete tune-up including rebuild kit in the carb, new choke stove lines, new pump-to-carb fuel line, new date coded plug wire, new cap/rotor/points/condenser, performance curve kit in distributor, new plugs and new vacuum advance. The car runs very strong. It will break the tires loose with a touch of the throttle and keep going until you let up. I have started to clean up the engine compartment a piece at a time, but it still has a ways to go before it will be really nice. All the hoses are AM script and have the correct tower clamps. New hood liner, all the under hood decals are new as well. New master cylinder, new correct radiator cap, all new and correct battery cables. New heavy duty battery. New 160° thermostat and new water pump. The car has the original fan shroud and Go-Pak 7-blade fan - runs cool even when stuck in 90° heat creeping along in a cruise. The following items are not on the car yet, but go with: two cans of the correct 68 only Caravelle blue engine paint. Everything is there to make the engine compartment look great, just needs the elbow grease. The only item missing is the valve cover tag. I have no idea why it is missing, but the door tag and build sheet provide all the info to have a replacement made. Trunk, under hood and door jams all seem to have the original paint. The trunk has the original space saver spare, jack, hook and inflator. New twin-grip and jacking instruction stickers as the originals were badly tattered. New truck mat in as well. The driver’s door tag is in awesome condition and of course is original to the car. Overall the car runs great and is a pleasure to drive. Car is completely stock so it behaves just like it was originally built. Exhaust is quiet with factory style mufflers. Front end recently aligned. Stops right now thanks to four piston power front disc brakes. Power steering is light so no wrestling with the wheel when parking it.
