Vehicle Detail
For someone waiting for that treasure that unexpectedly pops up on E-Bay -- a great VW convertible that has been restored to " like new" and has been in storage for the past 16 years, here is that car. I have owned my 1970 VW convertible, as only the second owner, since 1985. I have the original sales receipt ($2,659.92), all maintenance records, receipts, owner's manual , etc since original purchase. I have driven it for over 100,000 of the 154,346 miles on the odometer and was going to keep this car forever as my daily driver when I retired, which I did in 2008. As a result, every time there was anything wrong with the car, I took it to VW Restorations and Customs in Manassas, Virginia, and asked them to fix it. I'm retired military (30 years) and the car was in the Washington, DC area for nearly all the time that I have owned it. People always told me that VW Restorations were way too expensive, but VWs was all that they did and everyone also said they did the best work. As a result, this car has undergone three body-off restorations by that company in the 26 years that I have owned it (1987 - $9,147.05, 1996 - $11,011.60, 2007 - $16,637.83) I have all receipts and photos. In 1997, I installed a new top 36 oz vinyl, headliner, cables and all top seals, including all new mahogany wood -- all bows and side pieces ($1,470). I even have the original soft top cover. I've driven it less than 1,000 miles since the 2007 restoration and it just sat in storage from 2000 until the restoration. I got a job in New York City after I retired from the military and the VW just sat in our Virginia garage for the nine years I worked in New York. I relocated to Florida in 2010 and towed the VW to our new home where the car has been in storage since we arrived here. Since it had been sitting in my garage for ten years, I changed the tires to make sure there were no flat spots. I take the car out of storage only for car shows as a member of an antique car club and an occasional drive on a nice day. But, other than that, it just sits in storage. I would have no concerns about driving this car to the West Coast and back. And it should belong to someone who appreciates what a great car this is. I would consider it to be a "new car" given the amount of work that was done just five years and 1000 miles ago. I received a certificate of appraisal for $25,000 from Paul Suplizio after last rebuild in 2007. I think someone might pay that for this car, but I think it was more that Paul was trying to make me feel OK about spending $16,000 for the last restoration. But, clearly, this car is worth a lot to the right person. There are a few non-original things that I have done to this car. To allow a car cover, I hid the radio antenna in rear tail light (turn the radio on, the antenna appears). I replaced drum brakes with disk brakes for safety reasons. I installed mud flaps with VW logo. (They are no longer available because VW no longer permits its logo on aftermarket stuff.) Even before the 2007 restoration, I had installed a completely new engine in 1994 which was rebuilt again in the 2007 restoration. I added a Halon fire extinguisher in the car. I put in a couple of speakers in the lower front panels in 1997. And I installed a lock on the engine compartment when I realized how easy it was for someone to remove my new VW engine. If you have any questions or want to make an appointment to see the car, please call 352-753-6465. I am willing to sell it to anyone, but you simply cannot know what this car is really worth unless you go through the receipts for maintenance, examine and drive the car. Chances are I will sell it to someone in Florida. The car is located in The Villages, Florida, between Gainesville and Orlando. Terms and Condition: This car is Sold As Is. The balance is due 3 days…in all you have 5 days to pay in full. Forms of payment accepted is Bank to Bank Wire Transfer of United States account.
