With this came the last of the “Pagode” style SL’s. We are proud to offer this particular example, which represents the very best of what was available in 1971. In terms of colors and options, this car has everything one would look for in the final year for the 280SL. Sold new from Brumos Mercedes-Benz in Pompano Beach, Florida on April 7th, 1971 as a Black over Red example, it came complete with many great factory options: 040 - black body & hardtop 132 - red mbtex 401 single seats 416 hardtop mounted 426 power steering / automatic transmission, floor shift 440 bumper guards 461 instruments in English 491 USA version 503 outside side view mirror, left 515 Becker radio 524 paintcoat preservation 595 heat insulated glass 600 trim strips on hardtop 641 white wall tires 669 mode of packing VE I 249 heated rear pane 740 soft-top fabric, black The first 25,000 miles are well documented for this 280, seeing good service from the dealer as per the stamps in the original service book that are present with the car. The first owner, Auto Haus Rental and Leasing, sold the car in late 73’ to another FL owner, where it stayed for some time. In the late 1990’s the car made its way to PA. This 280’s most recent enthusiast owner purchased the car in 2001 and has enjoyed and cared for it until December of 2011. Today this 280 reflects an extremely well serviced example and overall a great driver quality car that is ready to be enjoyed. Cosmetically it shows well, with only a few minor signs of age in the finish. We believe the car has only been painted once in its life, in the original color, and done well at that time. There are only a few small trouble areas such as a small paint crack and chip on the right front of the hood, As well as a very small paint bubble on the bottom of the right rear fender. Both are very minor rendering the car an excellent driver overall. All rubber molding is excellent throughout as is the original glass and all bright work. The Hardtop is in great original condition inside and out. The soft top appears to be the original and does have two small tears where the hinges are. The interior shows as mostly original with the exception of an aftermarket radio unit. The driver’s seat bares some minor flaws but otherwise the interior shows well with its deep red color and wood still in overall good condition for an original. The dash does have some of the typical cracks, but nothing short of adding character to the overall appearance. All knobs, switches, and instrumentation are in working order with the exception of the speedometer which tends to work intermittently. Lights in the trunk and glove box, as well as the interior lights are all in working order as well. The trunk shows well, and is very tidy throughout still retaining the original labels in the proper places. Upon our acquisition, the trunk floor did have some minor surface rust, as is very common with these cars. We lightly sanded the area, and sealed it to prevent any further oxidation. The engine bay shows to be original as well with the correct firewall pad in place along with original spot welds on the inner fender seems. The body tag number also matches the hood. The engine bay shows as a serviced driver, with nothing out of place. Recent service history includes a complete rebuild of the head and related components, completely up to date cooling system, and brake system, along with many suspension updates; all documented within very recent years. The car is currently in superb running and driving condition with no issues to be disclosed. Starting, running, driving, braking, and handling are all superb, with good power throughout. While many 280SL’s are prone to rust and rot, this car presents very well and certainly remains original in these common areas of concern. The floors, rockers, trunk floor, inner fenders, and undercarriage all show as rust free with no issues to be noted. As testament to this cars excellent and mostly original condition as a well serviced driver, many interesting and original items are included in the sale. With this car you will receive: an original complete set of books (top manual, owner’s manual, AC manual, electric wiring diagram), service manual with service stamps and date of sale information, seat belt pamphlet, Mercedes-Benz Service Directory, and a 250SL-280SL booklet. Other interesting items included are an original set of keys with original paper tag for the antenna, a jack, spare tire and cover, a few tools, and wheel chock. You will also receive is a copy of the original factory record from MB Classic for this chassis number. All things considered, this is the best the 280SL has to offer: a 71’ with very rare and desirable colors, great options, two tops, known history, and numbers matching. As a rust free, well serviced example with all of its original affects and documentation, this is your opportunity to own one of the most sought after 280SL’s.
