Vehicle Detail

2001 BMW M5 - The Beast I have owned this incredible vehicle for almost 8 years and I can tell you it's just a phenomenal car in every respect, great looking, best color, incredibly luxurious, and over the top, exhilarating performance. It rides and handles like a dream and has supercar power - 0 to 60 4.5 seconds or better, 1/4 mile 13.1 seconds or better. It takes your breath away, yep, that's what a 400 horsepower V8 and six speed transmission can do and that's why the E39 M5 is affectionately known as The Beast. Don't believe my rave reviews? Here's what the pros say. THE ONE YOU REALLY WANT Ask your brain to summon an image of an M5, and it'll probably be this one: the E39, most likely in Le Mans blue, like the one we have here. This is the model that quite literally took the M5 from one century to another and announced its arrival with the sound of a new V8. You can hear it a mile off, a sort of deep vibrato that soaks the air and makes your heart quiver. It had - still has - nearly 400bhp and the sort of relentless third gear that renders all the others useless. You could use that cog alone to pull away, overtake, and maintain a gloriously loud cruise that exercises the VANOS timing system as it orchestrates the valves in a complicated-yet-efficient way. As the third of five M5s, if we include the new one, the E39 sits in the middle of the timeline, magnetizing the character of its predecessors and blending it with tech from the newer ones. It's upmarket yet classless, enormously fast yet very accessible. You could drive it all day below 50 mph, or take it to the TopGear track and do long burnouts until your rubber becomes smoke and becomes its own weather system above the airfield... Then you'd drive home and go online and discover a used one and we wouldn't blame you if you clicked 'buy'. TopGear November 2011 The Benchmark for Sports Sedans BMW has finally engineered a high-performance V8 into the M5, and it has been racking up raves like no high-performance sedan in history. With a six-speed gearbox and 394 horsepower, the M5 is a totally civilized sedan with racing car capabilities... The brakes are magic, flawless, breaking a barrier for power, consistency and easy control during hard usage. We were so dazzled that we forgot to test the ABS, the brakes are so good that the notion of a "panic" stop never occurred to us... Performance, performance, performance is what you hear about the M5, but its most amazing quality is the ride. The suspension is MacPherson struts in front, multi-link in rear, using aluminum components, with new meaning brought to the words "fine tuning." Somehow, brilliant BMW engineers have created this magnificent handling without compromising the comfort and smoothness of the ride, not one iota, not in one single situation. Even those humongous low-profile tires don't cause it to jar or bite - okay, maybe over railroad tracks at 5 mph. But there's no jolt over freeway expansion strips, no wandering over changing surfaces, and no tug on the wheel in rain grooves. If a ride this civilized in a 400-horsepower car with such grip is not unbelievable, it certainly is unprecedented... It may be a cliché to say a car like this raises the bar, but it's certainly true in this case. The E39 BMW M5 redefines fast and smooth. Its suspension is perfectly comfortable while offering unmatchable grip, the steering is perfectly precise, the brakes are perfectly strong and steady. The M5's competitors are the Mercedes AMG E55 and Jaguar XJR, which, by objective measures, are blown out of the water by the M5. Automotive And here's how other owners rate this car on KBB This is your opportunity to buy yourself a great present for the holidays and join these enthusiasts. You might consider a vacation and road trip, fly in to San Diego, enjoy some time in Southern California then drive the car home, I would trust it completely on a cross country trip. This car cost over $72,000 new but you can name your own price because there is no reserve on this auction - high bidder gets this awesome Beast. It is running perfectly with a number of recently replaced mechanical components, I believe it's actually faster than when I got it. Every single thing on the car works as designed and manufactured, this car needs nothing. Current on all services, I have very carefully maintained it and it shows visually and mechanically. I had a custom, mandrel bent, cat-back exhaust system designed and installed which features an x-pipe and high flow stainless mufflers. This set up sounds awesome, saves a significant amount of weight over the stock system and adds some horsepower. Within the last 5,000 miles I have installed new MAF's, K&N Air Filters, cabin filters, all 4 oxygen sensors, front brakes, a new battery and just recently done an Oil Service. It passed CA smog at the last registration renewal and had Major Service II about 18,000 miles ago. Tires are all matching Z-rated Dunlop's with plenty of tread. I have many receipts. Additionally, it's a very low mileage car, I bought it as a lease return with about 56,000 miles on it. It now has 90,300, less than 6,000 miles per year for the last 8 years. The exterior is also in very nice shape, spent most of it's life in a garage and has a brand new windshield (old one was pitted). Plus, when I was evaluating the car to sell it I was bothered by some scrapes on the bumpers so I just had them redone and they look great. This M5 is the hands down best color combination - Le Mans Blue Metallic with a really nice black interior and great driving seats. As I was admiring it in my garage yesterday - I thought it looks just about as as good as it ever has. The interior is in great shape, obviously no rips or tears, the seats do show some typical wear marks and creases but the leather is very nice. The CD player stopped working years ago so I took it out with the idea to get it fixed but I never did. I may have it somewhere, if I can find it I'll include it. I had XM instead. It's 10 years old so, of course, it's not perfect. The left foglight has a cracked lens and the housing under the left side of the front bumper is cracked (about $120 for a replacement from BMW) these things did not bother me enough to worry about fixing them and I am pretty picky. There are some minor flaws in the paint here and there, most noticeable are a number of very small paint nicks on the aluminum hood which is a very common condition on these cars. But no door dings, or dents, no deep scratches, the body panels line up correctly and, as you can see, it is straight and lustrous. No accidents, no rust. Yes it's fully loaded, all power accessories plus heated, memory seats, dual cabin hvac controls and the Extended Leather interior. Virtually the entire interior is covered in beautiful black leather including the seats, door panels, dash, console, steering wheel, visors and even a super classy Alcantara headliner. It has self-dimming mirrors inside and out with a very cool retro looking oval interior rearview mirror, headlight washers, a sunroof and an onboard navigation system that constantly computes latitude and longitude. I always felt safe in this car with my family, important safety features include self-leveling Xenon headlights accompanied by halogen fog lights for state-of-the-art night visibility, a reinforced passenger cage, lots of airbags and even tube-like bags that drop from the headliner to protect against impacting the front windows. The E39 BMW 5 Series was actually awarded the Safe Car of the Millennium Award in 1999 from the International Brain Injury Association. The mechanical specifications are impressive to say the least, a highly tuned V8 engine called the S62, displacing 4.9 litres, producing 394 bhp and featuring a 7,000 rpm redline. Double-VANOS, which varies the intake and exhaust valves timings for both cylinder banks, and 8 individual throttle butterflies, one for each of the cylinders, allowing for a much faster engine response time. You can control the performance characteristics of this M5 with the Sport button which tightens the recirculating ball steering and quickens the throttle response. All E39 M5s were equipped with a Getrag Type D six-speed manual transmission, a reinforced clutch, rear limited slip differential with a 3.15:1 ratio. Of course it also has independent rear suspension (IRS) and is equipped with huge four-wheel vented disc brakes measuring 345 mm (13.58 in) in diameter in front and 328 mm (12.91 in) in diameter in the rear. Anti-lock brakes, EML (fly-by-wire) throttle control and Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) were standard equipment. Other imperfections: The small digital display in the instrument cluster has some erratic pixels, another common problem, and the wheels have some curb rash from the original owner (to quote my kids: "I didn't do it"). I was quoted $100 per wheel to have them fixed, I kept meaning to get it fixed but I guess it never bothered me enough to do it. I'll include 3 extra stock M5 wheels, 2 rear and 1 front that are in good shape (a bit of paint flaking but solid), so you can use those or sell them - they are BMW lightweight forged wheels and I am certain they are worth more than enough to have the other wheels redone. There are some waves in the drivers window tint job. Having said all this the car presents beautifully, it still looks stunning and runs even better. The fine print: I have done my absolute best to present a thorough and honest presentation of the car, having said that the car is sold as-is, where-is, no warranty. This is a legally binding auction, please do not waste your time or mine bidding if you have no intention of following through on the purchase. Shipping is your responsibility, I'll provide reasonable assistance but I won't drive it to Timbuktu. If you want to have the car checked out or check it out yourself you're welcome to do so but if you wait until the auction is over it's too late. No joyrides. I require a $1,000 PayPal deposit when the auction ends and the balance is due within a week - cashiers check or a bank wire with enough time to clear - no PayPal for the balance. If you do not pay as described I'll sell it to the next highest bidder or relist. Oh yeah, these pictures belong to me and the new owner, no one has permission to use them for anything. Bid often and bid to win, no reserve - you will not be disappointed, in fact you will love this car!
