About 15 months ago I was in the market for a way to give my parents some mobility. Mom is in a nursing facility and confined to a wheelchair, so I hunted for a van that would allow my dad to take her out and go places. I was shocked when I saw how expensive handicap vans were. Then I came across a 1989 van with a lift and knew I found my answer. Well, Dad is no longer able to drive so it’s time to sell the van. Here are the details: The good: 1989 Ford van with Braun power lift 45,xxx miles (no, that’s not a misprint – amazingly low mileage) Brand new PA state inspection Tires have a lot of tread left on them Runs great – I drove it 200 miles from Philadelphia to State College, PA without any issues Cruise works, air works, heat works, lift works Reliable The less-than-perfect: Dent in the sliding door (see pics) Dent in the right fender and running board (which is why Dad doesn’t drive any more (see pics) Radio, power door locks and gas gauge don’t work There are multiple sets of controls. The set on the passenger side works except for the up/down control that sometimes sticks. The one inside works. Third set behind a locked panel in the rear. They worked last time they were tried, but Dad lost the key to that set. If you’re in the market for a brand new vehicle, this isn’t it. But if you’re like I was 15 months ago – looking for a reliable way to transport someone in a wheelchair, then this van might be the ticket. Thanks, and good luck!
