This is a very rare find. It is a 1962 Mercury Monterey Custom S-55 2 door coupe. It is one of only 2772 made by Mercury in 1962. It has been a one owner car since the mid 60's till this year. The car had been parked in covered storage since 1996. The thing that makes this Mercury so unique is that it is one year only body style with many rare options and the fact that except for the battery, tires and a few other parts it is completely original the way it came from the factory. This Monterey is equipped with the original 390 V8 330 HP engine with 4 barrel carburetor. It has a Merc-O-Matic auto transmission as well as factory air conditioning. It also has a factory dual exhaust. Being the sporty S-55 version this Monterey also has the rare bucket seats and console shifter. The leather interior is completely original and is for the most part in excellent condition for it's age. The headliner is original and in great shape. The car has a lot of interior chrome and it all looks perfect completely free of any signs of pitting. I believe the carpet is original and it is showing signs of it's age, especially on the driver side. The dash is excellent with no cracking, all the dash guages are also in great shape. The glass is all good and windows all go up and down correctly. The heater works well and the A/C blows warm. The headlights work as they should. The antenna mast is broken but I have found a replacement that comes with the car. As far as the exterior of the car goes it is again all original and I think it looks very good as is. The car is wearing it's original factory 2 tone paint which has never had any touch up or body work. It has a nice patina that a car can only have when it is old and original. Being an Arizona car it has never had any rust issues(see pictures of frame). There is a small ding on the driver door and a small dent before passanger rear wheelwell(see picture). All chrome trim as well as the front grill is in good shape as you can see in the pictures. Mechanically the car runs and drives very well. It starts easy every time and requires no warm up period like many old cars do. I recently had the carburetor rebuilt by a specialist (it is the original 4 barrel ford carb not aftermarket). The motor runs strong and sounds very good. The transmission shifts smoothly with no problems. Power steering works well. The brakes also work but will need a little work as there is a sticking caliper on one side causing the car to steer to the right when applying the brake. As stated the car has been sitting for a while so although it runs and drives fine I would not recomend flying in taking it on a 1000 mile trip back home. All in all this is a great old car that is lots of fun to drive and gets look wherever you go. It is a unique car for car shows too as usually you see lots of mustangs, chevelles, impalas. I often go to car shows and have never seen one of these at a show. The paint appears to be 100% original, there are no signs of any body work or bondo in the car ever. Interior seat fabric is vinyl not leather but is original to the car (car never came with leather option from factory).
