HELLO AND WELCOME TO ANOTHER GREAT AUCTION FROM GREEN OUTDOOR DEALS! I UNDERSTAND IT IS FALL NOW, HOWEVER THIS IS THE THIRD TIME I AM LISTING THE BUS! READ THIS GREAT DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF ONE OF THE NICEST EAST COAST BUSES FOR SALE RIGHT NOW!!! YOU ARE GETTING A GREAT DEAL! WE ARE GOING NO RESERVE, SO GET BIDDING NO AS THE RESERVE IS OFF! AFTER 3 TRIES AND ONLY GETTING THE BUS UP OVER $7K, REMEMBER YOU ARE BIDDING ON EASILY A $12-$15K BUS!!! THIS IS MY OWN PERSONAL VEHICLE THAT I HAVE EXTENSIVELY RESTORED OVER THE PAST 5 MONTHS. I HAVE OWNED SEVERAL VANAGONS OVER THE YEARS, AND THEY CAN BE ONE OF THE MOST UNIQUE AND FUN-TO-DRIVE VANS ON THE ROAD. THEY CAN ALSO BE FRUSTRATING IF YOU DON'T TAKE THE TIME TO ADDRESS SOME OF THE TOP ISSUES AND COMPLIANTS PEOPLE WOULD NORMALLY HAVE WITH THESE BUSES...I HAVE TAKEN THE TIME AND THEN SOME ON THIS BUS!!! FIRST OF ALL, THE MOTOR. JUST BEFORE I PURCHASED THE BUS, THE MOTOR WAS REDONE CORRECTLY BY A VW GURU OUT OF ITHACA, NY. THE ORIGINAL WAS SWAPPED WITH A 1991 AND FULLY REBUILT; THIS IS THE 2.1 WATER COOLED FLAT 4, AND AT THE TIME OF REBUILD (ABOUT 2k MILES AGO), THE FULL CLUTCH ASSEMBLY (HYDRAULIC), ALONG WITH FILTERS (FUEL, OIL, AIR) AND A COUPLE SENSORS (OIL PRESSURE, COOLANT TEMP) WERE REDONE. AFTER THE REBUILD, IT STILL WASN'T RUNNING PERFECT SO I TOOK IT TO MY EXCELLENT VW VANAGON GURU HERE IN BINGHAMTON, AND WE RESET THE TIMING, ADJUSTED THE FUEL INJECTOR ON 2/4 CYLINDERS, ADDED THE MASS AIR SENSOR BYPASS WHIP (ALSO KNOWN AS THE "VANAGON SYNDROME," WHERE THE ENGINES BRIEFLY HESITATE AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS--NOW CURED!), AS WELL AS A NEW CORRECT 2-WIRE BOSCH O-2 SENSOR, AND A BUNCH OF SMALL STUFF. THE SMALL STUFF INCLUDED A NEW SPEEDO CABLE (NEW STYLE BYPASSING THE USELESS EGR SENSOR, ANOTHER VANAGON-NEEDED UPGRADE), SOME MECHANICAL ADJUSTMENTS, NUTS AND BOLTS, EXHAUST GASKETS, TUNING, ETC. ANOTHER FRESH OIL CHANGE WITH CORRECT MANN FILTER 10/16/2011. ALSO, TOPPED ALL FLUIDS, ETC. THIS THING IS READY TO GOOOOOO! MECHANICS ALSO REPLACED: REBUILT RACK, POWER STEERING LINES STARTER/2 NEW BATTERIES!/IGNITION SWITH, SOLENOID (PIGGYBACKED TO THE STARTER). NEW GROUND WIRE, BRUSHED ALL CONTACTS, ETC. BYPASS MASS AIR SENSOR WHIP (A.K.A. THE "VANAGON SYNDROME"), NEW O2 SENSOR, SPEEDO CABLE, DASH LIGHTS. ANTENNA (CORRECT GERMAN-ISSUE) WATER PUMP, 2 HOSES. FULL FLUSH AND FILL 3 WEEKS AGO! ONLY ISSUES NEEDED TO ADDRESS: A/C NEEDS A RECHARGE. THE DRIVER'S SIDE SIDEVIEW MIRROR IS A LITTLE FLOPPY (NOT DAMAGED AT ALL! JUST LIMP). SPEEDO AND ODOMETER WERE WROKING FINE, BUT WHEN THEY ADDED THE UPGRADED WHEELS AND TIRES, THEY NEVER REATTACHED THE NEW CABLE. NEEDS TO BE REATTACHED! NOW, FOR THE REALLY GOOD STUFF! THIS VAN HAD GREAT BONES AND VERY FEW DINGS WHEN I GOT IT, BUT THE PAINT WAS A TOUCH FADED. AFTER A THOROUGH PAINT AND BODYWORK SESSION ($3K!), THE ORIGINAL PAINT CODE WAS MATCHED. THE BODY LOOKS GREAT AND SHINES UP NICE. I DIDN'T DO THE INSIDE PAINT LIPS AND DOORJAMS, AS WE PAINTED IT THE SAME FACTORY DARKER RED AND THEY AER IN GOOD SHAPE. TWO WINDOW SEALS WERE REDONE (REAR HATCH WINDOW--COMMON, AND ONE SIDE WINDOW). EURO-STYLE BLACK WITH THE CHROME TRIM CHANNEL DELETED. LOOKS GREAT! I ALSO ORDERED THE HEAVY-DUTY PLATE STEEL BUMPERS (OVER $1200. ALONE!), AND THEY CAME POWDER COATED IN MATTE BLACK. AS YOU CAN SEE, IT GIVES A MORE SUBSTANTIAL AND STURDY BUMPER YOU CAN ACTUALLY STAND ON OVER THE TIN-FOIL FACTORY BUMPERS! I JUST INSTALLED A BRAND NEW MATCHING TAN CARPET KIT FROM SEWFINE.COM. THE INTERIOR SEATING WAS IN EXCELLENT SHAPE, SO THIS REALLY DRESSED OUT THE INTERIOR NICELY! IN ADDITION, I ADDED THE FULL SOUTH AFRICAN UPPER AND LOWER GRILLE KITS, WITH THE SUPER-BRIGHT HELLA H4 HEADLIGHT UPGRADE KIT. IT INCLUDED ALL 4 LIGHTS, THE PROPER RELAYS, NEW ADJUSTERS, AND WHILE I WAS IN THERE WE REPLACED THE BEAT UP OLD ANTENNA WITH A GENUINE GERMAN REPLACEMENT! NEXT, WE ADDRESSED PERHAPS ONE OF THE BEST UPGRADES YOU CAN DO TO A VANAGON: WE UPGRADED THE WHEELS AND TIRES. THE FACTORY 14" WHEELS, ALONG WITH THE LACK OF STIFF WALLED TIRES FRO THE WEIGHT OF A VAN, HAVE ALWAYS BEEN A SOURCE OF COMPLAINT. IF YOU HAVE ANY EXPERIENCE WITH VANAGONS, YOU WILL KNOW THAT IT IS NOT EASY OR CHEAP TO DO SO! AFTER FINDING A NICE SET OF 15" VOXX MG3'S THAT HAVE THE CORRECT BORE SIZE AND BOLT PATTERN (NO DANDEROUS BOLT PATTERN ADAPTERS USED!!!), A FULL BOLT-TO-STUD CONVERSION WAS DONE ON THE FRONTS, ALONG WITH LONGER NEW STUDS IN THE REAR. MODEST 10 AND 15 MM MERCEDES-STYLE, HUBCENTRIC SPACERS CUSTOM MACHINED FOR THESE BUSES WERE USED TO CLEAR ALL STEERING/BODY, AND THE WHEELS SIT NICELY AT THE FENDER FLARES, AND A COUPLE INCHES OF MUCH-NEEDED CLEARANCE IS NOW PRESENT. THE VOXX MG3'S ARE A NICE 5-STAR, BRUSHED ALLOY WHEEL THAT ALLOWED FOR A BEAUTIFUL SET OF HAKKAPELITTA R 205/65/15 TIRES, THAT GIVE THE PROPER SIDEWALL STRENGTH NEEDED. THEY ALSO HISTORICALLY HIT CLOSE TO THEIR 65K TREADLIFE! LESS THAN 1K MILES ON BOTH! I ALSO INSTALLED A $1K THULE RACK WITH THE SUPER-HIGH TRUE RAIN GUTTER FOOT PACKS (4 FULL BARS, 3 ARE CURRENTLY MOUNTED), AS WELL AS A HUGE RAGE POWERSPORTS SAFARI TUBULAR BLACK STEEL SAFARI BASKET WITH THE EXTENSION ADDED! I BOUGHT A MONSTEROUS RAIN-X WATERPROOF LUGGAGE CARRIER BAG AND CARGO NETTING SET AS WELL FOR THE SAFARI BASKET...THEY ARE BRAND NEW AND COME WITH THE BUS! BETWEEN THE BACK STORAGE AREA IN THE VAN, AND THE HUGE STORAGE POTENTIAL ON THE ROOF, THERE IS ENOUGH ROOM FOR ALL 7 PASSENGERS AND TONS OF GEAR! THE INTERIOR, EXTERIOR, AND MECHANICS ARE ALL IN GREAT SHAPE. IF YOU WANTED TO SHOW THIS BUS, YOU COULD. I WOULD SAY IT IS A #2 CONDITION, BUT WITH SOME TEDIOUS FINISHING YOU COULD MAKE IT A #1. REMEMBER, AS A 1987, NEXT YEAR IT HITS THE 25 YEAR CLASSIC STAGE! THERE ARE A FEW MINOR SCUFFS ON THE INTERIOR TRIM PLASTIC, BUT NO FADING OR CUTS OF THE SEATING (THE REAR 3-SEAT BENCH DOES FOLD DOWN INTO THE DOUBLE BED, PLUS THE CENTER 2-SEAT BENCH CAN BE REMOVED WITH TWO BOLTS OF NEEDED!). HEADLINER IS IN GREAT SHAPE TOO. IF YOU ARE AFTER A NICE, HEAD-TURNING, DAILY DRIVER BUS WITH THE ANNOYING VANAGON ISSUES ADDRESSED, AND WANT IT TO BE RELIABLE, LOOK GOOD, AND LAST FOR YEARS TO COME THIS IS THE BUS TO DRIVE! THE BRAKES ARE GOOD, STEERING IS TIGHT, IT IS QUIET, WELL-TUNED, AND LOOKS GREAT! I HAVE SEVERAL NEW AND USED PARTS (FILTERS, FLUIDS, TAILLIGHTS, TRIM) THAT GO WITH THE BUS AS WELL! AND YES, I WOULD GET IN THIS BUS AND DRIVE IT ANYWHERE. I USE IT SPARINGLY A FEW TIMES A WEEK TO RUN ERRANDS, GO FOR DRIVES, WEEKEND TRIPS, ETC. AND HAVE HAD NO ISSUES. WITH THE REAR-ENGINE, REAR WHEEL DRIVE SETUP, THESE BUSES ARE SUPER SPACIOUS INSIDE! PAYMENT AND TERMS ARE AS FOLLOWS: A DEPOSIT OF $500. IS DUE AT AUCTION CLOSE VIA PAYPAL.
