Vehicle Detail

I'm not a VW guy, but I traded for this cool old 69 Volkswagen Westfalia "Westy" campmobile van and I need to send it to someone who can do it justice. This truck has a fairly recently rebuilt 1600 engine, built by some famous buggy shop in Lubbock according to the previous owner. It seems to run pretty good, but seems like it may need a tuneup. The tranny and clutch work great, the brakes are firm and don't pull. It has new shocks and the PO said that the front end had been worked over a while back. I haven't driven it any more than around the neighborhood, but it seems like a really solid old van. The tires have full tread, probably not more than a thousand miles on them, but are a few years old. This Westy has the pop-up that goes up vertically rather than up from one side. The panelling in the ceiling is coming apart, but the rest of the interior seems complete. The front seats have covers on them. I think that the passenger side is pretty good, but the driver's needs a new cover. There is one tear in the rear seat/bed cushion. The headliner looks like it was originally thin plywood and would be easy to replace. It has a little sink, ice box, a seat that folds down to a bed, a single bed upstairs, and a small dining table. All seems useable except the plastic sink itself which needs replacement. I have seen some with stainless sinks, so I assume that a regular RV stainless sink will work. The rest of the Westy-specific interior looks pretty good but needs cleaning and some restoration. The original carpet is still installed, but needs to be replaced. The van shows about 93,000+ miles. A kid in the neighborhood shot a BB gun at the flat rear window a couple of times, shattering it. I have a piece of plexiglas that I was going to cut to replace it (the rubber gasket is still fine), but as of now, its still out. The undercarriage is very solid and seems rust free. There is rust where the front bumper was, a little near the passenger door, and a small amount in the very back of the rear quarters, but this is NOT a rustbucket. It spent its last 20 years in Lubbock, Texas. The small rust areas are an easy fix and look like they came from where mud collected in the wheelwells. While the van runs and drives, I would not trust it to travel any distance without a good check out. I have only driven it around the local area, so i recommend that you either trailer it home, or make arrangements with me to deliver it to your location (I might be able to help with delivery in Texas for about $1.50/loaded mile) All-in-all this rig is as classic as you can get. An easy aesthetic restoration will make someone some real money! It will make a fun-to-drive work in progress as you restore it, and heck, this thing MAY be the last touring rig of the Mamas and the Papas, or some other old group! It would be a REALLY COOL mobile restaraunt, too. Bid away!
