This car is rare to say the least with a total production for 1970 of only 1631 units. If you are a serious Ford/Mercury collector or just like to be the only one at a car show who has “the only one on the grounds” car….Then this is your Mercury! This Cyclone is very original and has almost all of its factory pieces intact. The previous owner of the car was quite knowledgeable on these cars and decoded everything, and found the following. The block is dated as 1971, but the DOVE heads / intake manifold / exhaust manifolds are all correctly date coded to the car, so the assumption is that the block was warranty replaced in 1971. I find this pretty easy to believe because you know anyone who bought these 370HP Cobra-Jet powered cars planned on doing some street racing at the very least! The car has a C-6 automatic and a 9-inch rearend with a nodular center section case and 3:50 gears with traction-Lok. The Holley carburetor and MSD ignition coil are obviously not factory and the original air cleaner is gone. Car would be an excellent investment for anyone who wants a car that will only go up in value and be worth far more than their investment once the car is restored. The great part about the car is that it is overall a good solid car, and could be easily driven with some basic maintenance. Car runs drives and stops right now, but was in dry storage for the last 14 years, so expect to have to do some minor wrenching before you hit the open road with this car. The interior is in very good shape and even has 2 of the back seat belts still wrapped in the factory plastic. I looked around but was not able to find the factory build sheet though. The factory console / shifter dash / etc are all there and look really good. The dash does have some cracks, but I do have another dash that goes with the car (see pictures). Also the factory rim blow steering wheel will need restored. The closed headlight grille is not original to the car, but the factory one comes with the car (see pictures) so you can have whatever look you like on the car. All of the paint left on the car appears to be factory, but it looks like the hood was re-painted at one time. Car has very solid underside and floor pans, except for a hole on the driver side (see pictures), but it is fairly minor. This car has power steering and power disc front brakes. Body has had some patches welded in the fenders and quarters, but the finish work was never done. Trunk is quite solid except for some minor rust around the driver’s side lip where the weather strip sits. Overall this car is very solid and would be a good candidate for a home restorer or even a professionally done restoration as the finished product will be worth some good money. As-is the car only needs some fairly minor work and you can drive and enjoy the car while it just goes up in value for you. Look around….you’ll have a tough time finding another one like it!!! THE ASSUMPTION WAS THAT THE BLOCK OR SHORTBLOCK WAS WARRANTY REPLACED IN 1971. IT TURNS OUT THAT THE ENTIRE MOTOR IS A 1971 AND THAT THE HEADS (DOVE-C) ARE NOT COBRA-JET HEADS. THE MOTOR IS STILL A 1971 VINTAGE 429 AND STILL WELL WORTH USING, BUT IT’S NOT A CJ. BECAUSE OF THIS I HAVE LOWERED THE RESERVE ON THE CAR BY $2,500…..SO BID TO OWN!!! REMEMBER THIS IS STILL A 1 OF 1631 CAR……..AND IT WAS ORIGINALLY A CJ CAR INCLUDED IN THE SALE IS A SPARE GRILLE / DASH / INSTRUMENT CLUSTER THAT ARE PROBABLY WORTH $1500-$2000 IF YOU SOLD THEM SEPARATELY….SO THIS CAR IS A BARGAIN AND A HALF….ESPECIALLY WITH THE NEW LOWER RESERVE!!!!
