Vehicle Detail

I have for sale a 1956 Pontiac Chieftain 860 eight passenger 4 door station wagon, with its original matching number 316 cubic inch V-8 engine and 2 speed hydromatic automatic transmission. The Chieftain was lightly restored about 10 years ago with new paint, interior and engine overhaul. It was previously owned by a surfing company in San Diego, California named “Surf Angels” and was used by that company as an advertising vehicle and to pull a trailer with surfboards and surfing equipment to the beach. The restoration was completed while the car was in San Diego. I purchased the car about 3 years ago and have enjoyed it as a weekend driver. The engine starts right up and runs smoothly. I had the transmission overhauled last year and it shifts nicely. However, one of the transmission seals is leaking, although the more it is driven the less it leaks. The Chieftain has manual steering and manual drum brakes. The steering is tight and the brakes work well. The car drives straight and stops without pulling to one side or the other. As stated above, the V-8 engine is original to the car, and runs smoothly with no overheating issues. I run the engine on regular unleaded gasoline with no problems. The interior is very nice, with new seat covers. The carpet is nice and the dash has been restored very well to its original appearance. The original AM radio does not work. However, at some point in time an after-market AM-FM Cassette radio was installed under the dash with a fabricated bracket. The radio and bracket can be removed without harm to the dash. The heater, turn signals and gauges all work, but the horn was disconnected when the deluxe steering wheel was installed. There ARE seat belts installed for the front and rear seats. The paint is driver quality with some scratches and chips that have been touched up. The chrome is nice, although the rear bumper is showing its age, and could stand to be re-chromed. The hubcaps are very nice and the tires are brand new. The carpet in the rear cargo area is a little worn but is serviceable. The jump seat that folds out for the third row of seats is missing. The tailgate works fine and opens properly. All of the glass is good except for the left rear curved window which is cracked. The glass can be replaced. A fellow Ebay Seller in Oregon makes a replacement glass for this car for less than $300.00. I decided to leave the glass as is with the surfing decals. The Chieftain is good to go as a weekend driver as I have used it. The buyer would not have to do anything to the car to enjoy it as is, although he or she may want to have the transmission leak looked at and replace the cracked rear quarter glass. You should not buy this car if too much attention bothers you. This car is a traveling car show and never fails to get a thumbs-up or the most popular question, “What year is that?” The front California license plate and cool surfing license plate frames will come with the car, along with a large laminated Pontiac advertisement for 1956 showing an exact replica of this car in the ad. I hate to see the Pontiac go, but my interests have changed and it’s time to move on. Obviously, I can offer no warranty, either expressed or implied for this car. Also, the car is for sale locally so I reserve the right to end the auction at any time. Finally, please do not ask for the reserve. Thank you for viewing my auction.
