1996 Mercedes SL 600 22,XXX Miles!!!! Vehicle Features and Condition: Up for auction is one of the cleanest SL Mercedes that I have ever seen, much less owned. Someone will be getting a great deal on this car considering that the original sticker price was $123,000!!!! If you are familiar with the 129 SL 600, you know about the improvements over the 1990-1995 SL 600. The second version 1996-1998 is most desirable. This car was originally owned by a local Las Vegas hotelier and rarely driven. Unlike all the cars back east or close to oceans or snow, this car has no rust or metal corrosion anywhere on the body, on the undercarriage or in the engine compartment. The superior electronic 5 speed transmission and side airbags were added in 1996. The much-improved 5speed is 54 pounds lighter with 40% fewer parts than the earlier hydraulic 4speed. It also kicks down immediately and lets you hit redline from any speed. This makes the car feel much more powerful and fun to drive than the earlier cars. This is what I would call an immaculate Las Vegas weekend nice weather only driven convertible. The hardtop was taken off in 1996 and stored until I remounted it 15 years later so it obviously looks brand new. Since it was always kept stored and only driven occasionally in nice weather, the soft top looks brand new as well. This SL has been well taken care of and when you look at all the pictures it will become apparent that the vehicle has been pampered. Being stored indoors in a climate-controlled garage has really helped preserve this car. This is one of those rare eBay vehicles you see every once in a great while that are far cleaner than the rest. If you are looking for a nice super low mileage SL but want the timeless lines and bulletproof reliability of the R129 Chassis, this is definitely a car to not pass up. This is a Nevada car with no rust anywhere on it, minimal sun exposure, near perfect interior/exterior etc. Vehicle Exterior: The paint looks factory. It looks new with no oxidation or any major scratches or dents. There are a few rock chips on the front bumper but is hard to notice unless looked at up closely. All the VIN tags match and all the panels line up perfectly. The doors and trunk all shut with very minimal effort. The convertible top opens and closes as it should. I will be including a storage stand for the hard top (as pictured). All lights including the HID headlights work properly and the wheels look very bright and shiny as they should considering the super low mileage. The tires look new and are still quiet with no dry rotting. Vehicle Interior: The vehicle interior is in what I call near "time warp" condition, as it looks like it almost came out of a time warp right back from 1996. The drivers seat has very minimal wear on bolster but no cracks or tears. The passengers seat has no wear marks on it anywhere. The tan carpet looks to be in excellent condition for a 15+ year old car, and it was obviously owned by a non-smoker as the interior smells like new! The leather wrapped dash and door panels are pretty much perfect. The dash is free of any cracking, shrinking, or warping. The A/C works perfectly even in the 110 degree Las Vegas heat. All of the switchgear works as you would expect, and everything is incredibly untouched. This has a great sounding factory Bose sound system that works perfectly. Vehicle Mechanicals: This is one of the cleanest most original and well-preserved SL 600 Mercedes I have ever seen. This car runs excellent, has been driven occasionally since I acquired it and there doesnt seem to be any problems. It has been professionally detailed by hand since it was new and has never been taken through an automated carwash. Performance is excellent; its comfortable, dependable and safe. The transmission shifts with no problems or unusual noises. This 5speed gearbox is exceedingly smooth. You can barely feel the shifts, even on hard acceleration and when you tromp down on the pedal. The vehicle accelerates very strongly and smoothly, just as you would expect from the massive 6 liter V12. I always have a great time getting on the freeway and letting the engine do what it does best. Rarely do I ever have to put the gas pedal to the floor because it has such an over abundance of horsepower and torque. With nearly 400hp and 420lbft of torque, at half throttle you are easily pulling away from almost everyone at a stoplight. It also sounds great and has no unusual noises. The two seats are deep buckets with plenty of side support. And you need that side support because the SL600 handles extremely well. Besides great straightaway speed, it has great cornering speed as well. The front suspension is by struts, lower control arms, coil springs and a stabilizer bar, with anti-dive geometry and negative offset steering. In the rear is Mercedes' five-link design with coil springs, gas shocks and a stabilizer bar with anti-squat and anti-lift geometry. This car is equipped with height adjustable self-leveling suspension. There are three height settings and a performance setting. If you pay close attention while youre driving, you can see the car making constant suspension adjustments to keep level around corners and upon acceleration and braking. In addition to the self-leveling suspension, the car is equipped with anti lock braking and traction control with anti skid technology. The engine does not ping or knock. Braking is strong and the car just runs great overall.No known problems here. The engine looks new and all the hoses and belts are in great shape. Everything under the hood looks about like it did when it was purchased in 1996. The winning bidder could easily fly to Las Vegas and drive this car across the country.
