Vehicle Detail
1985 Mercedes 300d Turbo Third Owner, original maintenance booklet with oil change records, impeccably maintained and well cared for. Repainted original color last year with no body work performed. Up for sale is my beloved 300d benz that i bought in Febuary 2009,(and according to the very small town dealer in which i bought the vehicle), from the original owner. While i had planned on keeping this car for a very long time, i have bought 4 cars more since this vehicle, and have decided to let somebody else enjoy this classic car. This is my 3rd W123 Benz that i have owned, and while this has the most miles by far of any of them, its is definately the cleanest and best running. The car has 297,200 miles. I would not hesitate to drive the car tomorrow from coast to coast. By far the most durable engine Mercedes has ever built, ask one who has owned one! The engine is tight, smooth and uses absolutlety no oil between oil changes (i know this because i change the oil myself). This feel this car could easily be one of those 600 or 700 hundred thousand turbo diesel engines with the right maintance in the future. When parked the car will drip a couple of drops of oil. I have not owned a W123 that didnt. I suspect it is coming from the lower oil pan gasket (i simply put a piece of rubber in the garage under the car.) The turbo charger sounds normal and works great ( this is also the quickest 300d of the three ive owned). The valves i had adjusted less than 10,000 miles ago and my mechanic said that everything looked great and as it should. The car starts easily in any temperature, and the glow plug system works as should. The coolant is clean and the car has never run hot (even in texas 100+ heat). All of the fuel line return hoses have been replaced, the 3 air cleaner brackets replaced, and both fuel filters replaced within the last year. The belts and hoses look great. The tachometer sending unit, and a front brake job including new rotors were done in '09. The rear disk brakes are good and the parking brake works as should. The interior of the car is great. Ill let the pictures speak for themselves. The seats all look great with no rips and there looks like a repair was once done on the drivers seat hip aera judging from a texture difference with an aera of maybe 1"X 3".The wood grain is in great shape, save one small crack in the climate control panel. The wood on the center console is in incredible condition and i replaced all of the power window switches, not because they didnt work, i just like the look of new hardware. I also replaced all of the rubber bushings in the transmission shifter so that it feels crisp and new. The radio is the original type becker electronic with tape cassette which works, looks and all 4 speakers sounds great. It works so good it makes me believe it may have been replaced at some point. The digital clock is clear and works. The multi-control lever looks brand new and i assume it must have been replaced by the previous owner. The gauges all work great, except for the analog clock, and all of the warning lights work. All of the dashboard and console lights work. The cruise control works (which is amazing for these old benz's) after you figure out how to work this rather odd system. The climate control is automatic and works as it should, air from the center two vents is intermittent depending which setting you select i notice. The A/C system was converted to R-134 in 2004 (there is documentation on the top of the fan cover) and the compressor works and blows cool air, yet i wouldn't call it very cold. I have added a can or two of R-134 twice a year since i suspect it has a very slow leak. I have added leak detector and yet none can be seen anywhere on the system. My mechanic says these old W123 refrigerant capacities are small compared to most american cars and that when R-12 (the colder, old type of refrigerant) was changed to R-134 the system simply becomes less effective on 100+ degree days. The sunroof, power antenna, rear defroster, power windows, vacuum power locks (with plenty of reserve vacuum available), power mirrors and all interior lights work as they should. The first aid kit is intact and looks good. The rear panel looks like it was replaced at some point and looks like a very good job. The exhaust is rust free and looks great. No strange noises when the car drives, turns, or stops. When i had bought the car, the body was and still is incredibly straight, the underbody is amazingly clean and 100% rust free. However i did have the car repainted the original color becuase the paint on the roof was thin and the paint on the trunk lid on one half faded. The paint on the rest of the car from the hood to even the bottom of the doors was still great but i decided to have the car repainted with a single-stage basecoat clear cloat soon after i bought the car. I had all 4 of the alloy rims dipped and refinished soon afterwards, The spare rim and tire is in great original shape. All of the tires were replaced and an alignment was performed 7000 miles ago. Both headlight doors (the plastic grills around the front headlights) have been replaced resently and the taillights are crack free and crystal clear. The grill is nearly flawless, and the bumpers look great. All rubber bumper and bodyside mouldings are in great shape and all of the emblems look brand new. Pride of ownership shows very well. In fact it is the cleanest, most presentable 1985 i have ever seen no matter what mileage was on the odometer. The windshield has two small rock chips in it that were there when i bought the car and have not bothered me enough to replace it, i tried to show a close up in one of the pictures. In all honesty except for replacing the windshield with a brand new one, the wood piece on the climate control and touching up the former repair to the drivers seat again if you wished, there wouldnt be much to keep this being a show car. And how many show cars have you seen with nearly 300,000 miles on the odometer? I have the original key and two additional keys for you plus the original owners manual, maintance log, and the metal mercedes vin plate stamping. I have tried to be as honest and informative as possible but if you have any more questions about this car i will be pleased to answer them. Thanks for your interest!
