Vehicle Detail
1988 Ford Mustang Convertible LX with 4 cylinder and automatic transmission. Electric windows, door locks, and power convertible top that works well. Aftermarket rally type wheels with less than 5000 miles on the tires. Full description and 14 pictures are included with this listing. I have owned and driven this car for over three years and put probably 15k miles on it in that time. I changed oil/filter regularly. The car has never broken down on me. It is a high mile car, but is still in pretty decent shape. I'll try to detail the items for both good and bad. There are no large dents. The pictures show the best and worst of the exterior. My guess is the front bumper has been replaced at some point. I say this because, as you can see in the pictures, the left front cover appears to have been painted at some point. It may simply be that the last owner painted it because it was worn, but I do not know. So instead of trying to suggest something that may not be true I'd rather point out the flaw so you can make your own judgment. I replaced the taillight covers when I bought the car. The prior owner's daughter had a boyfriend that broke one out in anger, so instead of having a bare bulb showing I replaced the cover. I went with the clear because they were cheaper than the OEM style, and they look good. All the exterior lights work. The paint is in good condition, not overly faded, and is serviceable for a work or school car. Someone willing to paint the car can easily turn this into a nice looking car with only minor sanding and body work. The worst of it is probably the scratch as shown in the pictures. This appears to be either from someone intentionally scratching the car (similar to what you see when it is "keyed") or something sharp has scratched the side of the car. The scratch is deep enough that it is discolored in the area; however, I do not believe there is a lot of rust under it. The area around the scratch is sound and does not appear to be damaged deeper than the paint. The top is in pretty good condition, and there are no leaks in the material. The backwindow is sound, is clear (as shown in the picture), and the lift system works well. This is an electronic top, so it goes up and down with a switch. I normally keep the top down a lot during the summer and in good weather (I love convertibles). So the top gets routine use. As with most convertibles of this age, when you go through a car wash there can be some leaking around the area where the windows and top meet. Replacing the rubber gaskets will probably stop this, but since it is only an minor inconvenience I've never bothered. I normally hand wash the car anyway, so I'm just careful spraying in that area. There is no real leak during rain. I have never found the interior wet inside following a rain, and this car is always parked outside. The interior is in good condition. I do not think the interior has ever been replaced. There are a couple small tears in the seat fabric, but nothing that is causing the stuffing to come out. The seat springs are in good condition and the mechanism works. The carpet is faded a bit from the sun, but is in decent condition overall. Air conditioner does not blow cold. Fan works, but it takes a bit to heat the car. The defrosters work. This car has a 4-cylilnder and automatic transmission. Both work well, and they've never given me any problems in the 15,000+ miles I've put on the car. The motor does have a slow drip. I normally put in a quart about 5000 miles. The car has been parked in the same spot in the driveway for the last year and the oil spot under it is about as big as a softball. So you can get an idea of how much oil had to leak over a year to make that size spot. Since I also change the oil/filter every 4k miles, there is not enough leakage to even make a big difference at oil change time. All gears work, but the car's transmission has a slight hitch when shifting from 1st to 2nd gear. I had the local mechanic (Rolling Rubber in Cedar City) look at the transmission when I first got the car and they told me that it could last a month or a year. That was over 3 years ago. Please note, I do not drive this car hard, so there has never been a need for a hotrod engine or perfect car. If you want something that will get you a ticket going from stoplight to stoplight, then look for something else. While this is a sporty looking car, it is far from being a real sports car. It might go 0 to 60 mph in 20 seconds, so don't expect it to be fast. Since it is driven primarily because it has been dependable the speed issues are secondary. The 4-cylinder engine gets decent gas mileage (25+ on the highway) but the price you pay is a clear absence of heart stopping power. I have not driven the car on the freeway a lot, so I don't have much need to go over 35 to 40 mph. This car may do 70 mph, but it's not really a good car if you have a long commute on an interstate road. For around town, though, this is a very good little car. I am selling the car because I bought something else. I am cancelling insurance on it, so if you want to test drive it anywhere but around my local block you'll need to have proof of insurance. The NADA for a 4-cyl, auto, is over $2800 for low retail. The Kelley Blue Book value is in the same range, with trade-in value listed at $1800 for "fair condition." I believe this car is in better than fair condition. The vehicle is listed locally, so is subject to sale and removal from Ebay. The reserve price is $749, so chances are it will sell given the NADA and KBB values. I am selling this low because I want to buy an ATV, and am willing to take less so that I can use my money. Good luck with bidding.
