Vehicle Detail
History: 1966 Corvette that I have owned since 4-30-1979. Never ever in an accident. Driven just a few times each summer since the on frame cosmetic restoration done in the early 1980s. I have the names of two prior owners and a Corvette (now closed) dealership before that. This is a very smooth running, very drivable and quiet car. However, the big block performance is there also! I hate to give it up, but it will be sold. Be sure to look at the photos on my midvette photo site. The web address is below. Also note: 60,000 miles is an estimate. The odometer stopped 32 years ago at the number shown in my photo; 43,500.If you read this description and have questions or want to view the car, please call me at (810) 338 0307.In the "Adams Register" since 1983, this Coupe is absolutely a big block car. It was a 390 HP 427 based on the tachometer red line. The other 427 signals are all there, including the original 427 fuel line, the threaded rear sway bar mounting holes and etc. VIN: 108998 - This car was delivered new to a Chevrolet Dealer in Mesa, AZ. This was recently verified by NCRS records. This NCRS certification letter goes with the car. Frame: Car stayed in AZ for the first ten years. None of the owners after that drove the car in winter. As a result, the frame is super solid, still has factory black paint in a few areas. Body: "A1702" body date "E10" (12/10-20/1965 body & car build timeframe.) This car has a "no hit body". I know this because the original paint was stripped (for me) to prepare for the repaint. Never had flares, never had six tail-lamps. Tail lights & Bezels replaced with NOS GM service parts in 1982. Front light buckets rotate, and fit perfectly. (See photos). Trim = 450 (White Seats, Bright Blue Carpet and Dash.) New seat backs and new (in 2011) white vinyl just behind each door inside. Original old pcs. available also, if the buyer wants them. Passenger side door panel is original with armrest cracks. Driver's side is in better condition (Al Knoch reproduction? I can't remember.) Original J C Stevens carpet tag was saved when new reproduction Al Knoch carpets were installed. Paint = 976 = Nassau Blue. Lacquer paint applied about 1982. There are a few chips - no touch up has ever been done since that repaint. Engine: Same engine as when I bought the car in 1979. A 1968 427 (correct for '68 Corvette) casting number 3916321. Casting date on the block is December 1967 (L187). Heads are casting number "7215" dated L-21-7 (December 21, 1967) and l-18-7 (December 18, 1967). Edelbrock Aluminum intake holds a nice running (recently rebuilt) Holley carbreutor. Right size, but carb does not have the correct 390 HP carb numbers. Valve covers are actually chrome plated (as in Chevelle or 1969 Corvette big blocks) but painted orange. I believe the distributor is the date matching original. Will check if requested. (I know of an early '66 427 engine, NCRS correct "942" casting and NCRS acceptable casting date for this car. However, the owner wants a lot for it...)Electrical: Correct 37Amp alternator. Numbers available later. Exhaust: I believe the exhaust manifolds are data matching originals. I checked the casting numbers quite some time ago. Let me know if I need to check again. Old Exhaust pipes and stock mufflers under the car... not stainless. (No side exhaust ever. Rocker moldings are NOS GM parts, not repros.) Starter: Rebuilt in 2008. I believe it has correct numbers on it. Will look again and post if requested. Transmission: Borg Warner T10B "T10-B Q2" "C-DIV" Trouble free and tough Muncie replacement. The tail has "T10-7" on it. Production metal tag still attached. The shifter is a Hurst. This combination performs quite well. The Bellhousing is a steel "scatter-shield" style. I like that because don't want clutch parts in my foot. Brakes: Stainless Sleeves all around. Right rear caliper replaced with new sleeved unit this year. The single piston master cylinder is not correct, and it's not a power brake car. Fluid is all new silicone this year.Wheels: Newest photos show White 15x5 1969 Chevrolet Impala Wheels with correct 1966 Corvette wheel covers; Four disk brake rims, size 15x5, with new Goodyear radials. These make for a great ride. However, Four (4) Black Corvette disk brake style rims with no hubcap bumps (see photos) will be included for an additional $500. These four (4) are the same type wheels this car had when new, but not the original set. The TIRES on the black "true Corvette disk brake" rims are DOT reproduction red line Biased ply tires. They make for a poor ride. (Some photos may show rally wheels which ARE NOT offered.) Hubcaps: This car has perhaps the best set of 1966 Corvette caps you will find. No dents and good spinners. If by chance you don't want the hubcaps, I will offer the buyer a $500 price reduction for them. Fuel Tank: Very Clean inside and out. Original to this car. Replacement gas cap is an early NOS part. So is the replacement gas lid door, bought at Hartway Chevrolet in 1980. Dry climate and no winter driving means a solid original fuel line. Spare Tire Holder: Currently removed. Some cracked edges need repair. Photos available upon request. Included as an uninstalled part. No spare rim. Rear Differential: Coded AO W 254 E1 - Pretty sure this makes it a Big block 3.70 to 1 Positraction. Suspension: The shocks are new in the past year. Not Delco Products, but painted to look original. Front springs still have orig. production control (numbered) tape hanging on at least one place. The rear spring is original and probably should be restored. I re-installed a rear sway bar on this car last winter. I took it back off because (a) I didn't have it installed properly or (b) it's not working properly with the existing original rear spring. I will provide an additional Corvette rear spring with this car, along with the sway bar and links.Hood: In about 1980, I found what I thought was a replacement for my original 66 427 Hood. The original hood was cut open and a large scoop had been glued to the "bubble area". I regret selling that original hood, but I still have the name of the guy who bought it. I found out AFTER Painting that my hood is actually a 1965 396 Hood, because the "prop" bolts on the right front. Rather than drill the hood on the left, I installed the hood support (with a reproduction backing plate) on the right side. Other: There will be many photos available, on my "midvette" photo site. If something is missing in the photos, it may not be included, so ask. For example, I am still looking for the AM FM radio, but I do have a 390 HP air cleaner. . I intend to update this as the week goes on, so come back and read below for additional details. The photos will be loaded at http://gallery.me.com/midvettecars#100119 There will be more photos later this week also. Please note: I believe this to be a fully honest description of a real big block 427 four speed Corvette. As questions come up, I will add additional photos to help answer the questions. Do not assume you have seen all the photos (or all my comments) until near the end of the auction. Questions can be directed to me at (810) 338 0307 or by E-bay's "Ask a Question" feature. By the way, I think my reserve is quite low. If you are close to my area, I will consider (open trailer) delivery, as we often travel to Cleveland, Detroit, Chicago and other midwestern cities. I will ask for a reasonable delivery payment depending on the distance. Full "bank cleared" payment for the car must be made before I haul it to your place, or before you pick it up. Wire Transfer is the best way to pay. I will update this more, so read below for additional details. The additional photos will be loaded at http://gallery.me.com/midvettecars#100119 (Cut and paste this link.) Thanks for reading all of this and good luck bidding. Please see my other Corvette parts from time to time. On Aug-06-11 at 19:53:29 PDT, seller added the following information: I have been told, and I have to agree, the rear differential code "AO" means the rear came from a 327 Corvette. It's the code for a 3.70 to 1 ratio, and it is a Positraction. A casting date of G174 indicates it's not original. There is also a Service Part label on the main front support, in front of the differential. I suspect a dealer or other service replacement because no production bracket would have such a parts label. The casting date is incorrect for the car as well. These parts have not changed since I bought the car in 1979. Thank you for pointing this out. Another question was about dealer paperwork. Other than the NCRS document (created this year), I don't think I have the owner protection book. I know I don't have a window sticker or dealer order copy. I will double check my files for an owner's manual and warranty booklet. Thanks again. On Aug-06-11 at 20:41:58 PDT, seller added the following information: Follow up on the rear stuff: I just added a photo that shows big block yokes on the rear diff. (Ignore the white lithium grease I sprayed everywhere back there...) The photo shows the rear cover casting number of G174. My guess is someone rebuilt the Code "AO" rear with the bolt type yokes. This had to be before 1979. From driving this car, I am sure the ratio is 3.70:1. I also included a photo showing the right rear of the frame rail, in front the Goodyear radial. The left side frame end looks that way also, and both photos, along with many others, will be on the photo site tonight. Copy the web address from above. Thanks again. On Aug-08-11 at 17:14:41 PDT, seller added the following information: Thanks for the bids so far. I appreciate it. Also, I added 17 new photos to my gallery at: http://gallery.me.com/midvettecars#100119 They should show at the top if you have looked there before. Includes the trans tag from Borg Warner, some more underside views and a couple of the seats. Notice the new white seat backs are not yet installed in these photos (taken in July.) Thanks again! Tom at (810) 338 0307 cell On Aug-10-11 at 18:29:38 PDT, seller added the following information: Wednesday PM update: 1. I found the radio. It was removed for repair but never fixed. See photos on Thurs. I WILL OFFER THE BUYER A BRAND NEW Autosound Cassette AM/FM Stereo (Item number 11636 from Paragon in Michigan.) OR, THE BUYER WILL GET THE ORIGINAL AM/FM non-working radio, uninstalled. Original knobs 1966 radio knobs will be supplied, but not two radios. 2. I will replace the non-matching windshield wiper knob with the correct 1966 style knob. Photo shows a 1965 style, just left of the steering column. 3. I found no original dealer paperwork. I did find an owner's manual that I bought from Jerry Brewster in early 1981. My guess it's a reproduction copy. In any case, it says "second edition" in side, so it's dated later than the car. See photo on Thurs. Look for at least one more updates later in the week. Based on where we are so far, I will lower my reserve price. Thanks. On Aug-11-11 at 15:44:32 PDT, seller added the following information: *** Today my neighbor and good friend told me to ditch the reserve. He thinks when you know something will sell at auction, the bidding will be "for real". I don't have the guts to remove it completely, so I am lowering to $35,995. Thanks for your interest and let me know if you have other questions. Tom (810) 338 0307 Another good friend told me to ditch the white wheels. Because the radial tires ride so much better, I am going to stick with what I said above. That is: A set of four (4) black painted Corvette disk brake wheels for an extra $500. The black wheels hold four biased ply reproduction red line B F Goodrich tires (Silvertown 4 ply polyester 7.75 x 15) The hubcaps fit both wheel types. On Aug-14-11 at 16:52:15 PDT, seller added the following information: Sunday night: Eight new photos on www.me.com/gallery/#100119 Mostly door jamb insides and out. Glove box, new seat backs and radio there also. Thanks again!
