When gas was $0.33 per gallon! Wow GM 43 years later and you still don't have anything even remotely as revolutionary. Major news for 1967 was the availability of optional disc brakes and the three-speed Turbo Hydra-Matic to supplement the two-speed Jetaway. An unusual new model was the Turnpike Cruiser on Cutlass Supreme coupes and convertibles, which used a two-barrel carburetor and mild camshaft with the 400 cu in (6.6 L) engine and a (numerically) low axle ratio for efficient and relatively economical freeway cruising. The Turnpike Cruiser used the heavy-duty suspension of the 442, and was available only with Turbo Hydramatic. Special camshaft and carburetion systems completely transform the performance of the 4-4-2 engine. Advertised peak power is down from 350 bhp at 5000 rpm to 300 bhp at 4600. But peak power, as noted carlier, bas little significance in the overall performance picture. The vital point of maximum torque is dropped from 3600 to 2600 rpm. The two torque curves cross at 2900 rpm. Thus it can be seen that the Turnpike engine develops greater torque at all speeds below 100 mph in high gear. Well down at 1200 rpm, 40 mph in high, the Turnpike engine delivers 390 Ib.ft. of torque, compared with the 350 for the 4-4-2. This makes a definite difference in throttle response. What was the benefit of the package ? You got a car that used less gas! Which was pulling nearly 30% stronger than the 442. More information about the Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme Turnpike Cruising Package is available on-line. Tests of the OLDSMOBILE CUTLASS SUPREME TURNPIKE CRUISER when the car was newly released average out to appx 16.8 Hwy MPG. The price of the package was 142.18 $, but because you had to order the car with the 3-speed transmission., who was priced at $236,97 it became an expensive option 142.18 + 236.97= $380.15 (related to the price of 442 which was $184.31) Almost double the cost of a 442! Without hesitation we rate the TC-packaged car above the 4-4-2 as an allaround road car for this reason. This goes for all kinds of roads -not just turnpikes - because with an identical suspension, it gives away nothing to the 4-4-2 in this department. OLDSMOBILE'S CUTLASS Cruiser is eminently fit transportation for the long haul. The car is largely designed for the man who lives 100 miles or more from his job; for the interstate traveler who must leave Kansas City to make a call in Chicago; or for the inveterate weekender who seeks his pleasures by driving, calmly, quietly and at sustained legal speed. On Aug-06-11 at 21:47:43 PDT, seller added the following information: I am the 2nd owner of this car and have had it for about 10 years. This is a rust free garage kept classic. The paint was done about 5 years ago, base clear dupont still looks new about an 8.5 out of 10. The stainless and aluminium trim is in almost perfect condition. The chrome bumpers are original and of driver quality. I have owned quite a few classic Oldsmobiles, currently own 5 as well as my '61 & '62 Starfires, this car out drives them all hands down! This is the best running and driving classic car I have every had the privilege of owning. I hate to see it go... Just about everything on this car was either rebuilt or replaced with oem nos olds parts. I've also rebuilt the carburetor, new alternator, voltage regulator, new hoses/ belts, new wiper motor. The entire front suspension has also been rebuilt: •Upper & Lower Ball Joints •Inner & Outer Tie Rod Ends •Idler Arm •Upper & Lower Control Arm Bushings •Sway Bar Bushings •End Link Bushings with Hardware •Tie Rods •Control Arm Bumpers •Steering rag joint •Taper roller bearings •4 Piston Calipers rebuilt new pistons and seals
