Vehicle Detail
1948 Chevrolet 1/2 Ton Pickup w/ Extra 5 Window Cab Click Photos to Enlarge Description Offered here is a red 1948 Chevrolet Thriftmaster three-window 1/2 ton pickup truck with a clear Minnesota title. A nice project truck with lots of potential for any direction you might choose to take it. Starts and runs well. Engine is a reliable 216 6 cylinder from a '53, and it is mated to a 70's Saginaw 4-speed transmission. Connecting the tranny to the'79 Camaro Z28 10-bolt posi rear end is a new drive shaft. You will not be able to pull a stump out with this truck or load it up with bricks with this set-up, but you will be able to take it up to a good cruising speed on the highway without excessively high RPM's. The odometer reads 3406 miles, but the actual miles are unknown.Other updates include 12 volt conversion, wiring harness, front tube shocks instead of the old lever-type, front disc brakes from a '73-'77 Monte Carlo brake kit, new rear drum brakes and lines, dual chamber master cylinder, rebuilt clutch, and new engine timing gears. Also, an oil filter has been added, the carburetor has been rebuilt, a new radiator has been installed, and the speedometer has been replaced. Fuel pump, fuel lines, and sending unit are new. Fuel tank, which is under the bed on a '48, has been given an inner lining of Redcote, so there is no rust or sediment in the fuel system. Only the 1947 and 1948 model years had the fuel tank positioned safely under the bed as opposed to inside the cab, and many prefer these years for that reason. The battery is newer, and the seat has been rebuilt and recovered to original specs using an upholstery package from Jim Carter. The body needs some work. There are rust holes on the rear cab corners and on the lower cowl pieces. Long ago someone cut holes in the back of the front wheel wells to get some extra ventilation into the cab. Unfortunately, this allowed water and dirt to get into the lower cowl area to cause rust-out. The rocker panels are rusted out on the bottom as well. The rest of the body is not too bad, but the rear fenders have a lot of bondo on them. Doors need adjustment. The side windows and rear window are cracked. The truck could use new glass all around. There is no wood in the bed, just a piece of sheet metal. The tires hold air but they are old and have some cracking on the sidewalls. You wouldn't want to drive too far on them. This truck was made in Los Angeles and was first a National Guard vehicle. Then it served a California phone company before moving to the Midwest. You can still see a bit of the National Guard green inside the engine compartment.Included in this auction is a 5-window cab from South Dakota, also a '48. It would make a fine replacement for the three window cab that is on the chassis now. This is the more deluxe cab with the brightwork trim around the windows. Rear cab corners, cowls, rocker panels are very solid, with light surface rust only. Floor is very good as well, with surface rust and some pitting on the passenger side. Doors are solid, fit well, close easily, and do not sag. Original chrome door handles and window trim are in excellent original condition, with very little pitting. The side windows are cracked and the windshield and rear window panels are out, but the original rear quarter windows are there and are not cracked. The only significant rust is in the lower windshield corners, where water got behind the decayed windshield rubber and in the piece of sheet metal that extends from side to side above the windshield inside the cab. This will have to be replaced. Also note that there is a crease on the lower part of the driver's door, one of the rear cab corners is dented, and there is some denting on the front of the roof. There are cuts in the firewall, but the piece is still there and it could be easily welded up. The extra cab has heater and gauges. Additional parts included are an extra steering wheel, an extra steering column with steering box, a hood emblem that lacks paint but is in otherwise superior condition, a service manual, and a repro owner's guide.Truck and extra 5 window cab to be sold as is.
