Super Nice Driving Car Good Looking Comfortable Drives so smooth on the highway. Immaculately Clean Classic Dependabilty Some issues… NO RESERVE!! No Reserve! No Reserve ! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You are bidding on a rare ONE OWNER ultra good looking, nice 240 Volvo Wagon . It was owned by a very affluent Baltimore family in one of Baltimore’s nicest neighborhoods. It rides like a an absolutely delightful big luxury car like a Cadillac, albeit they neglected a few things in the last year or so. Rare one original owner car. They bought it brand new in the year of manufacture and kept it all these years. Meticulously clean. Cleanest older 240 wagon I’ve seen. (On the cosmetic side, so well kept we didn’t even have to wash it , let alone wax it or anything else before we took the pictures. It’s that nice Owners told us they changed the oil religiously over the years, cared for every little thing maintenance-wise and made a lot of extra effort to keep their baby protected free of dings and dirt and well cared for. In the most recent last year or so, they admitted though there were some things they let go didn’t saty on top of and you’ll want to address. Here’s a complete report below. Cruising speed highway. The ride -It certainly drives beautifully cruising . When out on the highway it’s just a real delight. The ride is sooo smooth. Whether it’s the long wheel base, the good tires or overall suspension… I don’t know, but its just very very nice. Its smooth, steady , and stable in that “Goes down the road like an arrow” “Volvo sort of way.” A handful of points do detract though. Here’s a very complete report. Engine – Nice. The engine is Volvo’s ultra high quality and dependable 2.3 liter 4 cylinder…really the engine standout that Volvo really burnished their reputation on. Super strong, super dependable, easy to work on , a peach of an engine. No leaks visible . Engine hard plastic splash up under protective bonnet still in place and clean and dry. (As you can see in the pictures.) Engine is strong, and smooth. As you certainly must know, these model engines can easily go well more than 300K miles and in some cases have gone well more than 500 K. Everything you’d expect from an otherwise well cared for 240 Volvo wagon. Tires- Near newish /fresh matching set of expensive Kumho Tires (nearly $600 just about 15,000 miles ago). 70-80% tread left. Nice. Brakes are real good . Strong . Fine . Exhaust- Nearly brand new entire expensive new exhaust system in last few years (as you can see in the pictures.) Often 240 wagons need exhaust . This ones good for a decade or more. Transmission – The transmission is the most important area with which I have a complaint . It certainly drives fine around town, gets from A to B without incident etc. However, if you’re paying attention or you’re a “car person “ , you can notice a subtle but noticeable delay between 2 and 3 rd shift . I asked Mr. Bilger about it he said it had been that way for several years, it was just an idiosyncrasy they just lived with and just kept truckin’ and might be that way for years more. He said that when or if the shift seems to take an extra second or two too long, he simply lifts off the accelerator foot for an instant and the trans easily and instantly shifts . Probably many people wouldn’t notice it (my wife probably wouldn’t ) but it does need to be mentioned. Noticable, but not overly objectionable . Could be garden variety wear, a partilly clogged transmission filter … whatever. For all intents and purposes drives fine. I wouyldn’t hesitate to drive anywhere (Florida ?) and back . [If one ever did eventually decide to or had to put a used trans in it the Good News is two fold. Last I checked, used 240 transmissions were very cheap and plentiful. Cheap to buy and cheap to put in. Reason is they are generally so good, there’s very little demand for them and, secondly they are a rear wheel drive layout. We bought one for just $150 several years ago for a wagon that was otherwise strong with 260K miles on it . Suspension drivewise is fine . Car sits up nicely. Steers well. No shake rattle and roll. No vibration on the road, just clear and smooth. It does however have all a very noticeable “clank” in the rear part when you go over a low speed bump. The control arm bushings need to be replaced. These are the 4 inch long 1 inch wide rubber sleeves through which the control arm bolts attach. They pad that connection . When they wear out , which is a common Volvo thing, thye need to be changed . They cause a clatter when you go over a bump at low speed. They are $18 each nd there;s four . If it was to be my car, I’d replace them. Scene : I was rushing to a Boy Scout meeting just last Wednesday when driving the car I was delighted to see this baby cruised nicely at 70 – 75 mph, At one point I even pushed it to 80. (again smooth, comfortable. ) Great at high speed, super stable, solid , tracks well in a straight line in that "arrow line" Volvo way. Just a real nice vehicle, especially out on the highway. It was such a thrill for me personally as an old Volvo lover to drive such a well loved , well preserved specimen of adying breed. --------------------------------------------------. Interior is overall beautiful. Carpets , are super excellent . remarkably clean. Really excellent. With the exception of the seams split in the drivers seat, the upholstery is also really good. (see the photos) . Only a minor hint of color fade in couple places. Headliner fine . Glove box latch stays shut . The rear compartments , gas shock struts on the rear tailgate ..all excellent. Drivers seat -One other very nice point which I greatly appreciated! – The driver seat. – the nicest driver seat comfort –wise I can remember. (Hey at 220lbs a good driver seat matters!) Despite the split seams, the driver seat supports you super comfortably and well. Seeing the “Mrs” who drive it, I could see why…she’s petite at about 110 pounds. She didn’t smoosh it out. Result is very comfortable on the road sting driving. Not even a hint of that squished down, broken back or twisted seat syndrome. Paint presents itself exceedingly well and the impression is rich and sumptuous. Looks like they kept it waxed and washed . Overall looks and feels extremely crisp and sharp in deep black. Few if any scratches and just a few age spots (see photos) One hand palm size spot where a little clear coat came loose and a small paint repair was made. Otherwise really nice. Even the roof rack didn’t have that normal chipped up, dinged up, paint chip sort of syndrome almost every other 240 wagon rack exhibits.(again, see pictures) Body - in super nice shape . One of the nicest I ‘ve ever seen. Not only free of larger dings and dents , but almost completely free of those small parking lot type dings that only show in a certain light. (You know those half dollar size semi depressions that only show when you look back along the length of the car?)Remarkably smooth, straight, prisitine condition car in this regard. These guys must have been very protective on the darn thing for the vast majority of the years they owned it. Rust-wise 99 % of the car gets a solid A. Couldn’t see any anywhere . For the 1 %, … kind of surprising …there’s an decent sized bubble spot right on the tailgate under the left rear windshield (actually under the rear wiper) as shown in the photo. Otherwise the body is great. Rust otherwise – Underside and rockers are great. A get on your knees inspection underneath shows no rust underneath either, oither than tiny normal skim here or there.. The underside is excellent. (see photos). Also the rocker panels down low and the pinch welds down low are all near mint. No evidence of run up over curbs, dings dents etc. Nothing! Safety, weight and strength in a crash – Hey, what can one say. Its a sturdy, heavy solidly built Volvo. One of the absolute safest cars on the road. Air conditioning, radio and power locks don’t work. I don’t know why. Fan blower motor blows very smooth and quiet (nice because lot of Volvos have a problem with this weak point). Heat is fine. Power windows, and mirrors . Also, nice point - "Volvo-wise" the normally cracking and splitting 240 Volvo dash board is in great shape- a few very small hairline splits in the surface plastic but excellent overall. Spare in trunk. Glass all intact . One small rock chip an windshield Little plastic fatigue around the marker light edges. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Despite the miles, ( in many ways mileage is largely irrelevant as long as you find the right 240 as most of you know). Even with some miles on it, this car, as we say, is still a very low mileage car! Safety for you – A few years back, when Volvo advertised an "Accidental Loss of Life" insurance policy for all '96 models, they had solid empirical data upon which to make their offer . Amazingly , Volvo will tell you that no driver deaths occurred in single-vehicle crashes or rollovers of the Volvo 240 car during the 1990-94 period. Not one ! Amazing safely record. Wow ! Volvo made its reputation for safety and dependability with these cars. You will notice there are still a lot of them around for a reason. They are extremely strong, safe cars. If you want to “Just Buy It”…. In the interest of selling it quickly I’ve reduced it for the eBay sale. [It has been for sale locally, financeable, .......for $3,295 and it’s still here. It needs to go. ] Now, we will just sell it for cash. The Just Buy It figure for the eBay sale has been reset to$1,888. ……….to just sell it easily. That’s fair. Very fair, indeed for this car , condition etc. Again, please call me with any question or concern. I will help you if I possibly can. Jim , 410-320-5589. Barring that, and in any event, it will be sold, NO RESERVE to the highest bidder. Simply, High Bid gets it, unless someone comes or calls early and takes it. (Sometimes the bidding easily goes over and above our “just sell it” figure , if its not bought early) So, this is a great little car ; for not too much money. Hope I haven’t overstated the case here . Its certainly not totally mint, but it is a real nice classic ..and I’m a bit of a "fan". Anyway… Please feel free to call me if you have any questions at all. I can easily be reached at 410-320-5589. I can answer e-mail but you’ll get much more comprehensive information and more quickly if you call. You can fly into BWI (Baltimore) (cheap flights) and drive this Volvo anywhere in the country. Or call for a quote on shipping. Thanks for your interest and good luck bidding.
