Vehicle Detail

CALIFORNIA SURVIVOR Rare and desirable color combo'd Zambezi Green (paint code L64K) over White interior, 5spd., Appearance Group, 914-4 1.8L. Sound original CA car. Cosmetically and structurally very solid with one repaint decades ago. Owned by the late Bud Whitfield of BW Performance. Bud was a local Sacramento legend for building the fastest VW/Porsche race motors. Bud mainly raced and built VW motors. He still holds many records to this day. It doesn't appear that this car was built to race, nor does it look like it ever competed, at least not seriously (no roll bar, still on street tires etc), but this car is fast...burn rubber fast. Although no records exist, Bud built the motor in this car. Without knowing the specifics, it most likely was built up to 2.0L specs, if not more. It has a set of perfectly tuned Weber carburetors, and Bursch exhaust. It truly runs and sounds awesome. It doesn't seem to leak any oil either, at least none that makes it all the way down onto my garage floor. The gear box feels tight and strong. It is also rebuilt. Shifts flawlessly and solidly in and out of all gears with no grinding, slop or fussiness of any kind. This one drives as good as it runs with updates that include Porterfield brake pads, Konis, front sway bar and stiffer springs. Full set of 5 OEM original 2.0L Fuch alloys on Michelin XZX 165SR15 tires. All have almost full tread and the spare looks like it hasn't seen daylight until revealed for pictures. This is just the components I recognize at a glance, the list is no doubt longer. When Bud passed it went to long time Sacramento Porsche collector Howard Sellers who also recently passed away. Howard and Bud were good friends and Bud built several motors for Howard over the years. Knowledge of the rebuilds on this car come from first hand accounts in Howards family. We acquired the car from Howard's estate and unfortunately records either were not kept or simply could not be found, however the 83,570 miles is believed to be original. Also the front windshield is the original as evident by the original manufacturers VW decal in the driver side lower corner (see picture in photobucket link below). That would suggest fairly light duty, 37 years without a chip or crack! Overall nice condition, but never restored or preserved as a show car. Scratches, chips, and age fatigue on the rubber components are consistent with a car loved, but used. This is a turn key car, and ready to be used every day, raced, restored or all of the above. I have seen and owned many 914s and this one is nicer than most, comparatively speaking. I feel this is an outstanding bargain and only listed at this price level due to the lack of documents available to substantiate this cars integrity.
